Yeah, that's kind of why I asked, becuase in some of the guides on gamefaqs, they have sentences like "level up to level x now, you should gain x amount of HPs."
Well I'm not positive, but I just read though the TAS discussion topic again recently, and Halamantariel, who worked briefly on the Earthbound TAS, specifically mentioned manipulating each level-up to provide the best stat increases.
It may not be random, but it does certainly vary... I remember once me and my cousin were playing this game in an alternating fashion, and I remember that at the same level, he gained something like 8 HP and I got 45. I said I was sorry, but only to avoid retribution. If anyone found out how to manipulate it reliably, it'd likely be a big help, especially for a jump like that.
There might be an element of randomness in it, but I'm not sure just how random it is. I know that after all my years of playing the game, I can still predict what level ups I'm going to get big stat increases (Sweet!, That Rocks!, etc.).
I have no idea about EB, but I know Phantasy Star II gives you extra special level ups every X levels depending on character, so I wouldn't be surprised. Character stats still vary a huge amount in PSII though...
Giving this a BUMP, seeing how this game is going and the progress that is being made. This is a game definately worth watching when its on here cant wait. There are a few levels that seem to stay the same with how much you gain I have found out over the years, but when you get the big power boost after beating Ness's nightmare in the Sea of Eden, I think that varies slightly each time, not quite sure since I havent played the game all the way through in several months. The That Rocks! and Sweet! I have found that a few levels seem to always give you, but those HP/PP jumps vary slightly. What I think the game does is make up for lost HP/PP given in previous levels and other stats as well so that you end up with the same HP/PP and stats possibly at 99 every time since you can get those bonuses for other stats as well depends on the character I think. Just thought I'd throw that out there, it might not be true but thats my thought on it since Ive played this game alot. I know you will have as much fun running this game as we will watching it. Good luck and hope to see it soon.
Hey guys, I'm new to these forums and I was just looking around the forums when I found this topic. I was wondering what a good time at this game is because I did my first segmented run a while back wiht a time of around 7 hours and 20 min. (This is from the beginning to the end of the conversation with Ness's mother, right befor the credits roll) I want to know if this is an ok time or not because I'm considering of doing this again to get a time under 7 hours. (which I came to realize is very possible to do) Thanks for your time reading this.

That's a pretty good time and I'm sure everyone here who likes/loves/huggles to death Earthbound would love to see a run under 7 hours. I wonder how low the time could get? Maybe around 6:30?
If you can beat all the bosses while avoiding most/all the normal encounters is the big issue. Then there's skip sandwich abuse and the exit mouse. I could see some of the earlygame bosses being absolutely unbearable underleveled, especially the mole if you fight him before you have paralysis(that might be the point to which you have to early game power level). Later game things get a bit more merciful as you have bombs and bottle rockets(a super bomb decimates the Mani Mani statue IIRC, and I think if you could afford to stock up on those and BBRs you could probably cheese your way through any boss that didn't have a power shield), and any boss that uses PSI can be beaten with Paula's shields. Of course it doesn't change how "fun" Carbon Dog/Diamond Dog and Ness's Nightmare will be.
I'm interested in hearing about the route on the 7 hr 20 min run. That's a good time really, and odds are whatever methods got that time are pretty close to ideal.
Just started on my second attempt on Earthbound. For those of you who want some info on my last run I'll try to explain it. I remember that my hardest points in the game were the first time you fight Kraken (his fireball can kill all my party members), Magicant (I hate those carefree bombs, I think that's what they were called), going back to Onett to get meteorite piece (those starmen are evil, they could kill my entire party in one star storm), and the final area of were Giygas. The run was really straight foward and had gotten easy when I got Paula and especially Jeff. I REALLY abused bottle rockets and I buy them whenever I can. The bosses were not that hard, I just use bottle rockets mainly. The only exception was the carbon dog since using one will kill Jeff. I didn't use the rock candy glitch at all (maybe I should of), and I didn't level up with the worms (the Criminal worms) because I think it was a waste of time. Another problem was the PSI, because I was under leveled and I usually run out quickly. (Especially with Paula). I also try to skip all those pictures that the picture guy takes, since they take up time. through out the run, I just verse enemies that I meet as fast as I can. I got really lucky with Giygas, only had 2 people alive and it took me 50+ tries to beat him. I know that it is very possible to get under 7 hours because I did make a lot of mistakes.
Anyway here were my other times and stats in the game (These are estimates) Final Save Time: 6 hours 45 min. Last Hit Time: 7 hours 16 min. Levels (From Last save point) Ness 68 Paula 54 Jeff 52 Poo 52
I'm going to look over my old run again and post more. If anyone needs help if they are also doing this run I'll try to help.

Sorry for the long post.
Wow, I hope you record a run of this game if/when you get under 7 hours! You would then be the bestest >_>
No need to apologize if you make long post, for proof you should look at the Ocarina of Time threads (the 200 page one, mostly). There are posts that could warrent a book and a sequal.
Thanks for the replies. I had started recording today. I had started the game and went through the first sanctuary. I had beaten Frank and his robot at level 5, while beating the titanic ant at level 8 (just barely; when I started I only had 1 hamburger and 15 PP left and he kept using his bite attack. I was lucky to get a smash attack which defeated him.) After that I saved and quit. I did all of this in 3 segments with a time of around 29 min 30 sec (about 2 minutes faster than my last run), and I'm about to battle the cops then leave Onett. I'm taking a break and will continue tomorrow. Hopefully I can get past the cops and into Twonson(sp?) within 35 min.

Woah, it usually takes me around 3 hours to get to Twoson 0_o Although, it has been forever since I played on the console, I've been playing on an emulator recently and realised how much fun this game is. I wish you mucho luck in the next segments!
Started recording again, and I have a small update. I am currently at the drug store in the Happy Happy Village. I had already rescued Paula and now about to go into the second santuary. My current time is a little over an hour (about 1 hr. 2 min.), which is about 5-6 minutes faster than my old time. My current levels are Ness: 15, and Paula: 1. I try to level up with the cultists so Ness could learn Paralysis, for Mondo Mole. This sanctuary should be easy so I'm not worried about it. It took me 8 segments to get to were I'm at, and now I'm on my 9th. (If you were wondering, my last run took me 37 segments to complete)
Seriously, great job If you are already ahead of your old run by 5-6 minutes, I can see this time getting under 7 hours. Good luck to the power of infinity!!!!
I went very far this time. I had just arrived at the desert, with a time under 2 hours and 30 min. (just barely, it's like a minute less than 2 and a half hours). I'll post later to see how much faster my run is compared to my old run.
But I got one question, since I'm here, should I power level with the criminal worms? I didn't do it in my last run at all, and I might consider doing this if it is faster.
I did a little test on this. The reason I was considering this was because I'm at a lower level level than my old run. But anyway I went through a practice run through the gold mine and the department store were Paula gets captured without to much problems. Also, the criminal worm method is rare. even though I could usually find one, it's hard to find another and just fighting one is not really worth it in my opinion. So I'll just continue without the criminal worms. (By they way, I'm beating my old time at around 13 - 15 minutes or so. Thanks to more luck.) I will probably continue recording later today or tomorrow.
Sorry for double posting, but I got another major update. (I'll try not to do it again)
I had just arrived at Summers (right after defeating Shroom) with a time of around 3 hours and 39 minutes. It took 24 segments to get this far and now I'm on my 25th now. I have to do that magic cake quest now. I'll post another update soon.

You're at Summers already?!?! At this rate, you'll be done pretty soon!
But, dang, Summers in 3 hours. I've been playing on an emulator for, like, forever and just got into Threed :/
I recorded a little, but had little progress. I went all the way through to the kraken(amazingly enough, he wasn't hard at all), but my times were very bad. ( they were actually slower compared to my first run) So I'm going to start back at the Summers save point. I must also note that I will NOT use the rock candy glitch. I have tested this out a little during my recording and it actually takes a while do do it effectivly. Plus I think it ruins the game and in my opinion cheating a little since you can manipulate your Hp, Pp, IQ, etc.
My time so far is the same
My Current levels are Ness: 38 Hp:305 Pp:101 Paula: 31 Hp:126 Pp:110 Jeff: 32 Hp:165 Pp: (of course, he doesn't have any) Didn't get poo yet.
I will not start recording again until probably this weekend. I'm trying to take my time on this to get better times. Plus I've been playing this game for hours getting these times so I'm tired. I should post another update sometime this weekend. Don't worry, I should finish this game soon ;).
