Speedrunning's returning to Dreamhack this winter.

Where:
Jönköping, Sweden.
http://dreamhack.se/dhw14/

Dates:
Doors opens: Thursday the 27th - 10 AM
Arena event : Thursday the 27th - 2 PM until sometime after midnight.
Main marathon: Friday the 28th - ~2 PM until Saturday the 29th ~2 AM.
Main marathon Saturday the 29th - ~2 PM until Sunday the 30th ~2 AM.

The empty time slots are for casual gaming/streaming/sleeping.

Objectives:
Speedrunning meetup with the goal of promoting speedrunning.

Talk about it IRC / Skype
#DHWinter at irc.speedrunslive.com
There's also a Skype group still alive from Dreamhack Summer. As time goes on a new group will be created for Dreamhack Winter!

Main event (Stream)
The main marathon will be held in the “C-hall”. Starting after the Arena event on Friday around noon the 28th.
Show off your games, interact with the chat, be cool like Chester Cheetah and have a good time!

DreamArena
The arena event will be speedrunning in front of a live audience. Starting 2 PM on Thursday the 27th, ending sometime after midnight. This is quite a big change from last year where we had 4 hours including setup to our disposal. Which means we can be less strict about which games / events we choose to feature. The two most important factors for the arena is a high level of skill and/or high levels of entertainment. The previous limit of only races and maximum 30 minutes have been scrapped.

What will remain is that each game will require at least one but preferably two designated commentators which knows the game inside and out.

Schedule
Link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WTuZZ35HyGqPhOg46_ldh-DlxBa816_UWBabQZGzG1Y/pubhtml

Sign ups
Public sign ups. There’s a limited amount of free slots (~40 amount free) given to us by Dreamhack. There’s however no limit on the amount of attendees possible. The price for a Dreamhack attendance ticket is currently ~500 SEK, might be subject to change. At this point, there are no more passes available.

Sorry for being unclear about signups!

Right now the organizers are headhunting runners for 4-5 races which we want to be featured on the DreamArena. Here's a clip from last year ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIF8Wd4G5aY ).
The reason why we are going about it this way, is that we got feedback about having too few newer / mainstream games last time. And since the target audience are gamers who might not be familiar to speedrunning, we feel that we want to steer the games list in a certain direction. Having that said, 4-5 races does not cover everything, so there will be plenty of room to get your games in if there's a potential for a race!

When the first games for the DreamArena are set in stone, we will start filling up the remainder of the marathon. Which should be about 30+ hours worth of games!

Feel free to post any suggestions here in the thread!

Alright. I'm mainly involved in the Super Mario 64 speedrunning community and I could try to get some people together for a race I guess!

edit; to clear that up, I'll ask around on who is interested and post a suggestion with runners who are!
I'd love to join this event and meet up with everyone again! So, just to bust up some suggestions for the non-Dream Arena (since this seems to be the place to write it, although I know you're focusing more on Dream Arena at the moment)

Mario Kart 64: (skips) or (no skips)
Estimate: skips 32-38 minutes, no skips 39-42 minutes
I ran skips at ESA and had a terrific run. Would be up for doing this in the marathon. No skips is less fun to watch because less challenging tricks, but no skips offers a lot more gameplay like people remember it as kids.

Crash Team Racing: any%
Estimate: 53-57 minutes
Again, I ran this at ESA. A fun racing game with a lot of large shortcuts unintended, and I've definitely improved since ESA already. A fun little PAL glitch that causes the animations of the bosses to mess up is also a crowd-pleaser

Also, I talked with trakilicious, I'd be up for doing the 16-star race if people are needed, and in case there is enough (good) runners, I'd also for sure be up for shoutcasting/commentary of the race.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Any%
Estimate: 3:30:00
Very strategic game nowadays with a lot of small ticks everywhere mixed with some huge timesavers. This game would obviously not be for the DreamArena but might end up as an interesting game for people passing by in the C-Hall. If Chrism ends up showing up (as I have heard he might) I'd definitely be up for a race or something.

Star Fox 64 - Red Line (iQue)
Estimate: 35 minutes
Not very glitchy, more of a game where precise strategies and tricks are what defines a good run. Could probably do this on Nintendo 64 or VC as well if anyone wanted to join in on a race. Any% could work as well for DreamArena I guess since it is a very popular game and would show that all types of games can be speedrun. If so Any% would be the category to play but I doubt this should be considered unless at least two other people join in for a race (N64 vs. VC vs. iQue would be cool I guess). Star Fox 64 is more of a scoring game though so might end up being a little fuzzy and this would therefore probably fit better in the actual "marathon" (although, I'd be up for some scoring as well even though I am not very "good" at it compared to the top players).

Star Fox 64 - 100% (iQue)
Estimate: 1:30:00
While submitting Red Line above I thought "well, people want score so let's submit the score category as well".

Quick question: Wouldn't it be a good idea to have something where people passing by can compete with us in different games? Like a section where people who think they are really good at Mario Kart or Punch-Out!! or whatever can sit down and test their skills against a speedrunner? I think that would raise the interest for our participation. I don't know if something like this happened during the summer DreamHack but imo it would be a fun experience.

ignore this post.
So how is it for people who doesn't speedrun?
Any chance we can come as well?
I understand we wont get free entrance like the others but is there a car that will leave from Skövde that will have a seat open?
And how much will I have to pay for it?

It's not going to be possible this time around. Too many logistical issues. Our area is closed off to the public, and people keep their valuables in there. The risk of someone grabbing a console/game/laptop and walking away is too high. If we would allow one or two persons, that will likely cause other to try to enter and that's not a situation we want.

To try not to be biased towards anyone. The sponsored tickets from Dreamhack are reserved for runners and volunteers. To be even more specific, guests are not eligible for the sponsored tickets, but there will most likely be volunteer work to be done. Examples from the top of my head are transporting equipment to DH, actively learning and preparing commentary for specific games.

The normal ticket price is 550 SEK according to www.dreamhack.com

curseddolls: 2014-09-09 10:01:51 am
Well if theirs any chance for volunteer I would love to sign up.
If not then I would love to come with either way, never been to dreamhack in my life but always wanted to come.
And since we are doing this within our community I just felt it would be more fun to experience it with people
who I know from before.

I don't want to go to sit there and play, only be there to experience it with you.

Well my idea was to have a section away from the marathon area just with a TV and a console for people to test their skills (with someone of us obviously). I really don't see how that could be an issue for us, I only see positive outcomes. If no one can be there for the moment, just take the console back into the marathon area. Problem solved.

The only issue I can see is having a place to set this up since I guess we have our own area where we are meant to keep our equipment, but I doubt we wouldn't be able to solve that. During this we could explain that the speedrunning community is open and wide making it easy to learn games and strategies and through that also promote our community. People would feel more appreciated, and the basic idea of any marketing ever is that your focused group of people has to feel like they can rely on you and feel comfortable.

I really don't understand how your reaction towards this can be negative, we are inviting our future speedrunners for some fun. We should at least look into it.

Text about allowing spectators challenge runners

The space we're allowed is very very limited. Anyone who were there last time can attest to that.

I'm not negative to the idea. I'm saying no due to practical and spatial limitations.

Super Mario World: 96 Exits
Estimate: 1:35:00, this is basically the worst run that i could ever had, my ESA run was a low 1:28 and about 1.5 min from my PB

There are a lot of cool tricks and levels in the 96 Exits, while many people think you fly over most levels in 96 it is not true at all, it comes with a lot of tricks on some levels such as p-speed wiggeling, capecanceling, Spawning wings where it normally shouldn't be possible, clipping OoB and much more.
The good thing about SMW as a speedrunning game, it involves very little RNG and it relies on your skill.

PB: 1:26:57 -  http://www.twitch.tv/se7endeadlysins/c/4144097

Now i could run Any% if people really really want me to however, I am not that consistent at the cloud, but i am damn consistent at the rest.
My pb is 9:58 and i will definetly improve this.

Pocky & Rocky: Any% Solo
Estimate: 30:00
Fastpaced shooter game, where you play either as a gril or a tanuki. Intense projectile dodging, damageboosting through enemies and the music is just amazing.

PB: 21:43 -
My run obsoletes the Co-Op WR, co-op is a lot "easier" due to a glitch that makes both characters immune to damage while they move faster and bosses Healthpool is still the same, while you get 1 more extra bomb in co-op.

We've actually discussed this before, but didn't pursue it because of not enough space.

I do think it's a really good idea though. But not now.

yup, booked the flight so I'm gonna bring my standard submissions:

Majoras Mask - 100%
Estimate: 5:40:00
An entertaining category and way too few people run it.
heavy glitch abuse, abuse of the physics of the game while completing the main quest while doing the sidequests.
contains lots of major skips, such as boss key skips and skipping parts of quests while still completing them.
this category has been shown at ESA already as a coop run.

Majoras Mask - Any%
Estimate: 1:50:00
Also very glitch heavy (not as glitch heavy as 100%) and has been shown last Dreamhack already.
anyways, still fun, lots of major skips, but simply less technical.
Altho I was hating a lot against this category, I did a run of it, I actually enjoyed it and am willing to improve.
(I know no one cares, but I'd prefer 100% cause it simply shows off more of the game, is more entertaining and more technical)
Smörgåsbord
Super Mario Bros. 3 - Any Warpless
Estimate: 1:05:00
A fastpace speedrun where I will go for all the yolo-strats. When playing the worst I got 58:XX on RetroSpelsMässan.
PB right now is 55:XX, gunning for sub DuckFist PB before DreamHack!

Super Mario Bros. 2 - All Levels
Estimate: 0:35:00
An entertaining category and way too few people run it. I had the WR last year. I was infront of the SGDQ run before 6-2 so I could do a good run of it but my main focus will be Mario 3.

Asterix - Any%
Estimate: 0:15:00
A platformer featuring the biggest European cartoon! Got some funny glitches!

North & South - Any%
Estimate: 0:05:00
Fun game!

Linkus7: 2014-09-16 11:04:05 am
Luigi's Mansion - Any%
Estimate: 1:10:00
Its a awesome game with cool strats but not many glitched, Just going fast

Luigi's Mansion - 100%
Estimate: 1:30:00
Like the Any% we dont use much glitches here, but it is a fun run.

Luigi's Mansion - Any% OOB
Estimate: 0:20:00
This is a really cool run when we only play the first 6 min of the game normal glitchless, and then we start breaking the game like crazy and it is ALOT of cool glitches we do.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Any%
Estimate: 5:30:00
Wind Waker have only been showed off 1 time before on GDQ, And its been alot of new cool glitches and routes found/made after that.
And it is a zelda game so it is full off glitches and all that stuff.

Lego Star Wars: Episodes 1-3
Estimate: 1:30:00
Its a few glitches we do, But this is a game that many people played as a kid and could really enjoy see be played fast.
DX, DXHR, MGR, TRA, GTA SA
Deus Ex any%
Estimate : 1:00:00
some new tricks for RNG grenade clips discovered, and now more consistent of it since It is not my 2nd full run. Tongue
otherwise glitch-heavy game from the start on(glitchy save, superjump, grenade clipping,

Deus Ex Invisible war any%
Estimate : 1:00:00

Deus Ex Human Revolution any%
Estimate : 1:00:00
Tons of new glitches since ESA which is unbelievable, made it now possible to go for sub sub 50:00

Deus Ex The Fall any%
Estimate : 0:20:00
Very easy to speedrun not really difficult and having a shop with you the whole time makes it broken.

---------------------------------------------
If videos are neccesarry I can add them as proof no problem,

I'm not sure yet If I can go but I will tell you soon enough if it is not possible.
Signing up!

I have a whole list of games I can play at Dreamhack.
I will let one of you guys decide which is played when for most entertainment/ suitable with timeslots.

Dr. Mario (SNES) - Any%
Estimate : 40 min
level 0-20 (running all levels a.s.a.p.) Most common % to run but repeatative.

Dr. Mario (SNES) - Pts%
Estimate : 50 min
Same as any% but with the challenge of accummulating 1.000.000 points. It's a modified % that requires a high skill level to make extreme combo's or else 1.000.000 isn't possible.

Tetrisphere - Puzzle mode
Estimate : 40 min
Complete all puzzles (can do blindfolded / no audio cues)

GoldenEye - multiplay
Estimate : 35 minutes (3 maps of 10 minutes)
A few maps of multiplay with other high skilled players. Can challenge anyone in the audience in 3 vs 1 mode just for show. Interaction with the audience might be nice.

U.N. Squadron - Any% easy mode
Estimate : 25 minutes
Side scrolling game with epic sound track for its time.

Bubble Bobble - Bad or good ending %
Estimate : 60 minutes
100-120 level of bubbles!! Colorful levels with tricks to complete them a.s.a.p. Invisible counters to trigger items for skips and power-ups.

GTA V - Any%
Estimate : 8:30 min (to be on the safe side)
The latest GTA game with stunning graphics and storyline. A game with 3 main characters each having a unique skillset. Lots of skill, deathwarp, scene skips and alternative routing. WR is an hour faster, but with the amount of RNG, anything can happen in such a long game.

The legend of Zelda - Any% /no up+A
Estimate : 45 min
Classic in all forms. Brings back memories! Nostelgia! Plane simple finish the game a.s.a.p.

How to survive - Solo / Coop%
Estimate : 90 minutes as of now but cutting fast!
New horror survival game with quests and hordes of zombies. Coop with Curseddolls or Solo if she cant make it.

Starfox (Snes) - Any%
Estimate - 15 minutes
Flight simulator with a fox in a flying tin can. Classic with many follow ups. Can fit in a star fox block with pottow.
The results are in
SSX 3 - all freestyle platinums
Estimate: 50:00
Console: NGC
The goal is to beat each freestyle event as fast as possible with a platinum medal. Monster tricks, point multipliers, keeping your combo alive, and managing your boost meter is key to success. All freestyle platinums is shorter than the all freestyle golds category that was ran at ESA because you can skip some events that don't award platinum medals.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect - Story% hard
Estimate: 01:45:00
Console: NGC
Fast paced FPS with a lot of variety in environments, weapons, and enemies. The "Hard" setting requires you to be both fast and precise as enemies only really take damage from headshots.

Mega Man Network Transmission
Estimate: 01:20:00
Console: NGC
A unique Mega Man game that plays out with tons of movement, stage- and enemy elements from earlier Mega Man games, but uses the battle chip system of the Battle Network games. You have the option to set a default chip which you'll then get every time (often it's "double jump"), and that lets you bypass the rng and get through all stages fast consistently.

Majora's Mask - 100%
Estimate: 5:40:00
Less technical and possibly less entertaining than any% (really depends on if you're familiar with the game or not)
But the run is somewhat interesting. Runs this long are usually bad for marathons unless you make them interesting with good commentary

Majora's Mask - Reverse Dungeon Order
Estimate: 2:10:00
More of a showcase category
Very entertaining and has some wacky glitches that people would find very amusing
This run also doesn't have many "run-ending" segments so it's pretty good for marathons

Esitmate: 1:20:00
This a bit shorter than the normal any% run I did at ESA, skipping the very last two boss fights in the game. It's mostly the same run however we pick up a additional item, plus we also get to experience this wonderful credits sequence
