i think this is pretty exciting! (especially since i never got past the canyon world.)

tips? um...use backflips to get higher, sometimes?

Running this game is a great idea! DK for the SGB is one of my favorite GB games. It's definitely worthy of some attention. Good luck!

I am also planning a run for this game, it's about third on my queue right now. Don't let that stop you from doing your run... just know that you may have competition down the road Smiley

Out of curiousity, are you going to do segmented or single segment? I think that a single segment run with no deaths would be just about impossible, since so many small mistakes, especially in the later stages, will result in a dead Mario (everything kills you in one hit). Personally I was planning to do segmented, a segment for each world (the intro stages and city would probably be combined since they're short and easy).

As for tips, there's not much I can recommend that you wouldn't already know. Backflips are the fastest way to gain height and should be abused to no end. You can grab vines in midair, so you should try to grab them as high up on the vine as possible if you need to climb it (unfortunately, you always have to start from the bottom for ladders). You can double jump over a lot of traps that you were probably meant to go around. Also, it's possible to do a sort of wall jump in the game... I learned about it from reading the Donkey Kong TAS topic. It can add an extra jump's height to your backflip, but it's very hard to pull off in a human run. Firstly, it doens't seem to work on every wall, so you'll have to experiment to find places to use it. To do it, all you do is backflip into the wall and then jump again at a specific time, but the timing has to be almost perfect. Personally, I don't think it's worth too much fuss in a speed run since there's only a few places I've found where it could be used to save a lot of time, and unless you got to the point where you could perform it very consistently, you would probably waste almost as much time trying to do it as you would just using the normal route. So far there's only one level I've decided it would be worth using on... it's one of the midworld DK stages (I'll have to double check the specific stage later), and it would easily save 10 seconds or so.

Anyway, good luck with your run! If you finish before I start mine, I'll be interested to see what kind of tricks and routes you come up with for some of the more challenging stages.

Thanks for the tips, Arrow. I didn't know about the walljumping, I'll check it out and see if it's worth using. I have noticed that doing a double handstand jump is faster than simply walking, but it requires a large amount of space and so far, I've only seen maybe 5 or so places where it should be used.
As for segmented vs Single Segment, I'd personally love to be able to perform a single segment, but the game is simply too dificult to run without dying a lot in the later stages. So, instead I'll be running 5 segments, one segment for two worlds (the beginning and the City count as one world as far as I'm concerned) so that would be...
segment 1-classic, City, Forest
Segment 2-Ship, Jungle
Segment 3-Desert, Plane
Segment 4-Iceberg, Rocky Valley
Segment 5-Tower

I will NOT accept any deaths in this run, so it'll be pretty difficult, but I think I can do it. I hope I can live up to your expecations Arrow, and to everyone else, I hope I don't disapoint. I start taping tomorrow.
Now a hit show on the CW
Again, good luck. I have a hard time even finishing a single world with no deaths (especially the plane, iceberg, and valley)... if you can do two with no deaths, you will definitely have my respect. I think your fourth segment will be the hardest one, by far. Keep us updated on your progress.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I've been trying to find this game for 10 years.

I still have that mark on my head (where Donkey Kong stepped on me)

Ooh, would make an interesting run. Go Mario!

Sounds great.  (Do you think Radix will list the run as a Mario or a Donkey Kong game?)

Just out of curiosity, is the GBA version a sequel, then, or something?  Would it make for a viable speedrun?
dinosaur from the past
A sequel on crack, basically. You start through the four original levels, but then things go crazy. Mario has a shitload of new acrobatic jumps that are used. Most enemies you can pick up and throw like in SMB2(US). Only ever fourth level involves getting to DK's platform at the top... the rest involve picking up a key and bringing it to the locked door. Doing so is usually very puzzle oriented, with conveyor belts and crap, complicated by the fact that you can't let go of the key for more than a little while or it disappears. One of the main things is you'll have these little icons scattered around that make ladders or floors come out of where you choose... but only for a limited time.

Yoshi, I think he was talking about "Mario Vs. Donkey Kong," since he said GBA. And yes, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong is a sequel of sorts to DK '94. They share the same elements like finding the keys, backflips, etc. with the addition of the stupid toy Mario levels. Personally, I think DK '94 is far superior... the levels were funner and/or more challenging, and the controls seemed a lot more responsive. But I still enjoyed Mario Vs. DK... it was nice to at least have a sequel at all to such a great game. Would it make for a viable speed run? Certainly. I wouldn't mind trying it myself, but since DK '94 is my favored game between the two, I definitely want to do that first.

Suzaku, here's some more info on the wall jump (taken from Bisqwit's forums):
"The down and dirty on wall jumps is you have to be exactly 2 units away from a wall and backflip into it, if your sprite changes to a skid then you wait one frame and then jump. If it doesn't change to a skid then you reposistion and try again."

The way it's described there makes it sound like a TAS only sort of thing, but I assure you it can be done by human hands... I've done it myself. It just usually takes a few tries.

Interesting question o_0

I'm quite happy with the positive response towards this run. I didn't think many people remembered this GB gem.

Anyhoo, it's Friday (5 AM, just woke up for classes and I want more sleep...) so, it's the weekend for me. I start taping segment 1 tonight. I'll keep you guys updated
Great game, have finished it yesterday once again.
There are only a few pain in the ass levels:
Jungle - i thought the level after the 1st DK battle
Egypt - Climbing to the top with ladders, bridges etc
Iceberg - 2 or 3 difficult levels
Tower - Giant DK 3th round, when he uses his fist before showing his head again.

First segment taped. Before I get into it, I'm afraid to inform you guys that I will be doing nine segments like Arrow, instead of five. The good news is that the run will be much more polished. I really wanted to do five segments, but I find I start sucking when I tape and I get all nervous. I don't think I'd be able to keep poor fragile Mario alive for that long. Please don't hate me, everyone. *runs off and cries*

*sucks it up* anyway, the first segment is the classic levels and the City. Here are my times in game seconds. The total is the amount of time that I had left on the clock after each four stages.

0-1 - 3 sec
0-2 - 4 sec
0-3 - 6 sec
0-4 - 8 sec     total - 379 left
1-1 - 8 sec
1-2 - 11 sec
1-3 - 7 Sec
1-4 - 19 sec   total - 555 left
1-5 - 8 sec
1-6 - 18 sec  (I miss a backflip which almost ends up with a burnt mario)
1-7 - 14 sec
1-8 - 17 sec (An errant handstand nearly killed me) Total - 643 Left

All in all, it's pretty good so far. Arrow, since you seem to be very knowledgable in the game, do you think I should keep going or start over? I'm personally not sure how I'd improve the section other than the listed errors.
Now a hit show on the CW
I'd say keep it. Mistakes are going to happen. If you only accept "perfect", you're going to end up very frustrated and may never finish the run. Thus far, I'd say that your intro stages ARE perfect (379 is my best as well)... I have a feeling there might be a way to cheat a second out of 0-3, but it would be hard. Stages 1-1 - 1-4, again, perfect. I can't even get 11 seconds on 1-2 (I was able to manage a 13 just now, I don't know if I can get any lower). A wall jump on 1-4 IS possible and would save a lot of time, but as I've said it's very difficult. Your times for the next four levels are about the same as mine, with the exception of 1-7... I was like 3 seconds slower there. So already, even with mistakes, your run would be at least 5 seconds faster than mine would be. I can tell I'm going to need to practice a lot if I'm going to stand a chance against you.

So unless you want to try the wall jump in 1-4, I think you should just keep going. I wouldn't risk it, personally, since it would be hard to do all of your first segment perfectly AND nail the wall jump in the same run.
These are my own records of the game(had to start over, all my files were deleted Cry

Segment 2 (Forest) taped! I won't be giving out my individual  times cuz I'm too lazy and I don't want to give everything away, but I will sttill comment on things and I'll still post my total time per 4 levels.

2-4  - 551
2-8  - 536
2-12  - 582

my 2-8 was perfect. It's a 50-50 chance for me to make the jump off of the falling pillar and I do it perfectly. Because of that, I take 2-9, and 2-11 slower than I should have because of my nervousness. 2-10 was ok, but I wasted a second because I actually forgot the key ^^;;  Nothing else really worth mentioning. I'll start on segment 3 now.

Segment 3 (Ship) taped. A lot more frustrating than I thought it would be.

3-4  -664
3-8  -637

I did great in 3-4. DK pulled switches at great times and I ended up beating it in 7 seconds more than usual. My 3-8, however, was absolute trash. I end up losing three barrels and it costs me a lot of time. The few places that I saved more time than usual hopefully evened it out, though. Onto the Jungle (groan)
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I tried throwing barrels at Suzaku and he jumped over them

I tried fireballs and pressing switches and Suzaku dodged them

Then I threw a nuclear bomb and Suzaku..........well that isn't important right now.

Onto the Jungle.

Sandbags have special powers which only increase everytime they get hit with a home run bat [^ ^]

Done taping segment 4 (Jungle). I'm in class right now, so I don't have my times, but I'll post them when I get home. IIRC, the section has a few sexy moves (and one retarded error).
On to the Desert, which should be a fairly easy segment to tape.

Easy but slow. Quite a few of the desert levels have boring parts that you just can't seem to make faster (climbing, elevators, etc.). After that will come the hard segments.

Very true. The airplane isn't so bad, but Iceberg and Rocky Valley is going to make me cry...
