There's a way to skip the cutscene where the game introduces orcs and also skip the whole 1st orc fight.

This skips the trigger which starts the cutscene and spawns the orcs. After you're back inbounds you can go straight to the place with the rope bow and Leanna will follow you there. Only bad thing about this strat is that Leanna is qute slow so it takes her actually around +15s longer to get there than just doing the orc fight, so only way to save time is to get to the 3rd level of the temple and kill the orcs there and then go back down when Leanna arrives.

Very cool stuff guys, I just picked up practising the SS run of this game since I use to love it a couple years back, I just have a question, How exactly do you do the boat door clip in chapter 4? is there a very specific place to place the two crates next to the cabin door? If possible could someone who can do this clip consistently make a short video on how they set it up? Thanks guys, hopefully i can contribute to breaking this game somehow Cheesy

New strats for L09_A1 and L05_A:

For L09_A1: basicly the gems you need to get to activate the spider statue are the top 3 ones. 2 of them are hidden in the walls for some reason. 3rd one you get from the water area. You can merge the first and 2nd cutscene of the gem insertion by placing 2 gems at the same time. You can place all 3 at once but  it's really hard (this would merge all the cutscenes).
As for L05_A these are the old strats found by Zantze but improved by youtl. You now skip all the fighting in this map, and now there is almost 0 combat in the game.

If you look at the bar in the loading screen for chapter 1 you'll notice that there's basically two sections: the first 75% or so of it is black then the rest is slightly lighter.

If you hit quicksave right around that part in the loading and load that quicksave, you'll be off the horse.

The problem I'm having at the moment is I don't seem to have my sword when I do that. Gonna see if I can figure that one out real quick

EDIT: figured it out. In order to keep your sword into Chapter 1, you have to drop it into the crystal room and then pick it up as soon as the level end cutscene starts (aka your screen turns white)
Now I'm having a problem with the haybale skip into chapter 2 always crashing my game

can't seem to figure out a way to make the game not crash, even in the couple instances I get into the chapter 2 loading screen

It crashes because of the horse skip. You save too early or too late. To avoid this pause the game at the point you said you'd quick save. Let the game fully load and you'll just see a black screen, now quick save and quick load. It should work.
To bind a key to pause you just "bind key pause" into console. You can do it w/o pausing but it just makes it easier.

Soo... I have just finished the game casually and it was amazing. Now I'm looking into the speedrun of this game, but I'm having a big problem with the horse skip in chapter 1.

After I execute the skip I can't use the sword thrust to gain speed. (the thrust animation still plays, but it has no forward momentum to it.)

In order to use it again I have to unequip and equip the sword a couple of times (which is really slow).

Because I'm so slow the cutscene where the city gets attacked starts when I'm at the end of the level and when I'm entering the loading zone to the next level my game crashes because of that cutscene.

Any help for these issues?

EDIT: oh and I have just seen a recent run on Elgu's twitch channel. How did he fling himself across the gate bridge in chapter 1?

That's called pause launching. In this game when you're near a edge the game tries to push you off. If you pause when you are in this state you keep gaining speed. If you pause for long enough you can fling yourself across the map and so on. Shrimp found this quite recently.

So I've been screwing around with the triggers & NPCs to find out what the cause of the crash is.
What I've found out is:
- Killing the horse prevents the guards at the main gate to spawn and the first city attack cutscene to start.
(The guards will only spawn if the horse passes a certain spot on the map. (though there are no visible triggers on the map until the main gate.))
- Executing the pause launch skip will skip a trigger which sets the Cyclops to vulnerable.
- Completing the "Kill the cyclops" objective won't fix the crash. (Which makes the point above to be ignored.)

Still messing around. I'll give an update if I find out more things.

Well I already thought it might be the cyclops objective trigger...
though it depends not if I kill it or not or even if I hit the other trigger to spawn the soldier and what else, the game still crashes for me.
Which Version of the game are you running? Steam or non Steam version? And the newest update?
Maybe it's just regular crashes for me because the game is unstable as heck anyway and crashed a couple of times even on my casual playthrough...

I run on latest Steam.
Also you want to run the game on Low/Medium graphics settings. It tends to crash on high on some loading screens/areas.
Do you guys use mousewheel to jump and do the sword boost with? Im having trouble rebinding my jump and bunny hoping with space is kinda tricky

Space. The game does not like jump on mousewheel for some reason.
wow I seem to have missed a lot of new tech being posted. Really thankful for the pause launch in particular because I get trolled a lot trying to Stonehelm normally (particularly jumping over to the guy after climbing that first rope, always miss the ledge somehow).

It seems it's been a while since anybody has posted any updates for the any% speedrun of Dark Messiah and i see alot of people who want to get into the run. I decided to put together a tutorial which explains how to speedrun the entire game and how to do all the tricks (this tutorial is a little out of date now but just watch the WR and it should bring you up to speed on all the newest strats):

Hi!

I'm currently running this game (PB is 35:15) and I'm experiencing the "famous" crash at Stonehelm after the horse pause launch . I know how to avoid it, ( by triggering the trigger at the bottom of the stairs, like Elgu shows here http://i.imgur.com/WLeXhw7.png)

So as you can guess, the game keep crashing during the loading screen (100% of the time and with or without the pause launch. What seems to causes that crash is the quicksave/quickload trick just after the prologue), it could not be that bad if the game had time to autosave at the top of the guard's tower but it's not. So, the only way I found is to setup a save (by doing the game with a casual route), saving the game just after the crash and when I'm running I don't skip anything, I just use the save after the game crash (so I don't win time, in fact i'm loosing time because as you know the timer run in the menu).

I do understand that this way is not truly legit, but it's for me the only way to keep speedrunning this game. So if anyone have a solution I'll take it, otherwise what do you think about adding this to the rules of the speedrun? (If this is not ok, can we ad a new category, crash% maybe?)

I did a video for showing you exactly how I do that (you can notice that the save is set in 2020, like that it's always on the top of the loading menu) :


I also want to ad that I tried to reinstall the game, clear cache, I'm running the game on low settings. I even tried to run it on a virtual machine with Windows XP version, as expected that was pretty awfull.
