Tricks, Guides and Patcher:

Quote:
Routing: While this changes all the time mainly due to my segmented run requiring more and more Tiny Improvements to save mere seconds, we do have general routing guides in video form created by Professor Broman,
Part One
Part Two
Part Three

Tricks: can generally be found by either going to my Youtube which has most of the skips / glitches OR you can just read through everything in this thread Smiley or just post your question most of us are perfectly happy to give you the answer.

Patcher:

DrMalcom's V1.8.4 to 1.1.0 Patcher.
Quote from 'drMalcom':
Remove the DLC's you don't need from the DLC folder inside the "data/Bl2_1.8.4_to_1.1.0.xdpatch" directory. I don't know which one is Gaige).

Cbenni's 1.7.0 to 1.6.0 to 1.3.1 to 1.1.0 Patcher: This Patcher will roll your game back to versions 1.7 / 1.6 / 1.3.1 &  1.1.0, should you wish to restore your game to the most recent version you can roll forward using the patcher or let stream update the game itself.
Patcher

VERSION 1.7.0 : If you are rolling back from version 1.7.0 you will need to play the game in offline mode otherwise the game will crash when trying to use more recent files (which are downloaded on start up) on an older game version.

Huge thanks to Cbenni and TheRTB for their previous patchers.

@ Onin

Yup couldn't agree more, however The majority of the community decided upon this so I in-turn had to roll with it. personally I fell that if records are litterally smashed by say 5 minutes + then they should be taken as a new record without dispute.
however, I can see the point in finer timing regulations if a record is beaten by maybe a minute or heck even a few seconds but yeah it's down to peoples egos ultimately... I just track the records lol.

1. Runs of this game are over 2 hours or 3 hours long, depending on category.

This is correct.

2. Loading times are not a very significant part of this time.

Completely false, it is a very significant part of the time. While my loads only affect my run a couple of minutes, someone like TheFunCannon has literally 10 minutes of penalty due to loads. That's a huge margin.

3. Differences in loading times are also not very significant.

Yes, they are.

4. You're currently unaware of how long character movement is registered during loading times.
5. You're currently unaware what the impact of longer load times is on said character movement.

What do these even mean??

6. According to the leaderboards, the smallest difference in top times is over 3 minutes.

Yes, but that's because we're using RTA timings as placeholders.

7. It's, again, a 2-3 hour run, laden with RNG that can make or break your run at any time.

There are only a couple of spots that can really end your run, most of which are on you, not RNG.

Honestly, you should really do research into a game before you try to make points about it.

Peach tells me the difference between HDD and SSD loading times is pretty insignificant. So I guess it's more a problem for people with low-end PCs. Fair enough.

I hear you're able to move during loading times to some extent. Exactly for how long isn't clear. It isn't clear whether longer loading times mean more movement and to what extent. It isn't clear whether said movement is included in the IGT ticking during loading. In short, you guys don't even fully know how to accurately subtract loading times from your runs.

And when I say "make or break your run" I mean having to reset because no BP, losing several minutes on getting the right shotgun/sniper rifle, etc.

Again, I'm just playing devil's advocate, but this all just sounds very strange to me.

Yes, between HDD and SSD, there isn't a noticable difference. From PC to PC however, specs matter, which causes an unfair advantage.

And no, you aren't able to move during loading, you're only allowed to move during the transition screen.

Plus people don't really reset if they don't get a BP, I know that I don't.
Onin you're ignoring other PC component that affects how fast your loadings are, the CPU.

On the Borderlands games (1 and 2)  HDD/SSD have almost the same performance, but the CPU has a much bigger influence. For some reason Gearbox decided to make this game really CPU heavy for basically everything in the game, graphics, loadings...

Putting some of my experience with loading times here, in BL1 I'm the only player that uses a SSD and yet I have the slowest loading times of all runners, and it's slower by far.

You are 100% able to move during loading, you can walk a few steps forward or even manage some freaky double jump stuff.  You'll have to figure out where this occurs for you when timing.

Additionally, after the doubts brought op about the save file. I really don't think they should be used.
If these doubts were proven to be unfounded. I would still be against it. Skipping the first RNG encounter in the the game to "reset less" is a laughable reason to do so.

Is this only during area transfers where you don't teleport in, or both? I don't believe I've been able to do that during save and quits.
You can do it after a S&Q, but regardless loads will be difficult to time for everyone.

Since IGT is no longer used, there is no penalty for using the premade save file and it wouldn't make sense to arbitrarily add a random number to the final time.

The chance of getting a good sniper rifle is 1/5, the chance of getting the perfect sniper that optimally saves around 10 seconds is 1/25, neither of which are extremely unbearable to reset over. If you're so keen on potentially saving that 10 seconds on a run that isn't even extremely optimized yet, you can in my honest opinion reset for it, there is no real excuse to using premade save files to skip a part of the run that's comparable to the starting pokemon or even the BKH on a dark souls speedrun.

EDIT: To add to the loading screen movement, every load ends before the loading screen fades out, if you load into a new-u station (blue warp) you cannot move but you are already in the game for a split second.
Speed > Safety
So, I know this is basically beating a dead horse by now, but premades:

1) They're not ACTUALLY needed and the ends don't generally justify the means.

The chances of getting a rifle you can work with are roughly 1/5. The "Perfect" start only saves ~10s overall when you really look at it. So we're saying that this is absolutely needed? What? Nobody is nearly at the point where 10s is going to make a difference. This is nothing but laziness, that's all there is to it. Considering this fact, the perfect sniper rifle is STILL ONLY A 1/25 CHANCE! That is NOTHING compared to just about every other game with RNG in the beginning. What the hell happened to just dealing with RNG as it comes? So what if you "have to reset for 2 hours to get a run going," that's part of speedrunning and has been for years.

2) Under the new timing method, time starts post-influence instead of not being affected (Because the old timing method was IGT).

Timing now starts at character control, this means that we're intentionally removing something from the game that could potentially affect the outcome of the time itself in the next few areas. This seems like it goes against quite a few general "rules" most communities have. The RNG at the beginning is important, it wasn't AS important before because we used IGT. Now we're just straight up REMOVING something from the game in order to save time. In my eyes, this is basically the same as using 3rd party programs to gain a slight speed boost occasionally. Again, reminder that this is for at the very most, 10s of time gained, which isn't remotely important right now (and likely never will be).

3) Why? Why does it matter? Why is it needed? Why can't we just reset a few more times? Why are we so fucking lazy?

I would LOVE to hear the reasoning that justifies this absolutely ridiculous idea. There's a MASSIVE logical shitstorm involved with this concept of premades. Why don't we just manipulate the vendors too? Wouldn't want to have to reset after all my hard work getting there. While we're at it, let's just find a way to rig a Quad to drop out of a skag pile randomly down the route also, that'll save us some time. I hope you can see my point here, we're basically saying that rigging things to save time before we even start the game is okay. Which it isn't, which is why this is a stupid idea.

Just to drop a quick additional point in here.  Every other community is fine with dealing with starting RNG and I'd prefer not to be a running joke to everyone else, which this is quickly becoming.  I'd like to get things away from all these discussions and start running the game again so we can say we have times for the game again, instead of killing off the run because all these changes happened at the same time.

The only reason why the starting RNG point was brought up in the community in the first place was because it was before SDA timing started, which they agreed with, and most of the community did. Now that timing starts at character control, this may be a problem now. I'm fine with resetting for snipers due to this new stipulation, but I still argue this is going to drive away new runners of the game.

They agreed that whatever the community decided on was fine with them, which is intended for submission of video for the site. The implication here AND wording is such that it permits the decision to be revoked, reworked, and reconsidered at later points, such as now. Not to mention, that discussion should have been held in this thread, which we ALL failed to to make happen during previous inquiries about the matter.

I actually disagree entirely, in fact I think it would be essentially falsifying how this game operates to do so. A player beginning to run this game will be looking to first complete the route under decent situations, or even bad ones. This includes knowing why certain guns are bad, some good, and some just simply "okay." Not letting them understand this initially, right out of the gate so to say, is a massive problem because it feeds into the logic of "why not just change that too?" which is obviously a bad thing. Another thing about it is that it just flat out isn't needed. It's a 1/25 chance (1/25, 1/26, 1/28 have all been mentioned btw, not sure precisely which it is, doesn't matter though) to get the best possible outcome, that is absolutely nothing. Secret of Evermore has a 1 in 20k+ chance for a perfect start and we happily accept this, as do new runners of that game. This isn't even remotely close to games other people run that actually need a perfect start to even get going. I hate sounding like a broken record here, but it's promoting laziness and automation in speedrunning, neither of which really justified, and as such, diminishes our community over time even if the initial impact is positive.

I'm also not trying to jump on your ass or anything Shining, it's just a discussion and I feel quite strongly about it which I'm sure is pretty obvious.

edit: Also, making another thread doesn't validate the issue any further, it just makes this community look more like a joke.

Sorry if this is a frequent question, but how can I use the patcher to downgrade 1.8.2 to 1.1? I am new to speed running this game, and I have been practicing using Gaige with the current patch. However I would like to start using the 1.1 to run her, and the patcher downgrades from 1.6 not 1.8.2.
Edit history:
Erheller: 2014-04-28 05:15:27 pm
The 1.6.0 to 1.1.0 patcher should still work for 1.8.2.

The patcher itself does not seem to work for some people. Just copy the contents of the "patch_160_to_110" folder to your Borderlands 2 directory. The launcher might crash once or twice but after that everything should work perfectly.
Thank you, I will be trying that tonight.
