Tricks, Guides and Patcher:

Quote:
Routing: While this changes all the time mainly due to my segmented run requiring more and more Tiny Improvements to save mere seconds, we do have general routing guides in video form created by Professor Broman,
Part One
Part Two
Part Three

Tricks: can generally be found by either going to my Youtube which has most of the skips / glitches OR you can just read through everything in this thread Smiley or just post your question most of us are perfectly happy to give you the answer.

Patcher:

DrMalcom's V1.8.4 to 1.1.0 Patcher.
Quote from 'drMalcom':
Remove the DLC's you don't need from the DLC folder inside the "data/Bl2_1.8.4_to_1.1.0.xdpatch" directory. I don't know which one is Gaige).

Cbenni's 1.7.0 to 1.6.0 to 1.3.1 to 1.1.0 Patcher: This Patcher will roll your game back to versions 1.7 / 1.6 / 1.3.1 &  1.1.0, should you wish to restore your game to the most recent version you can roll forward using the patcher or let stream update the game itself.
Patcher

VERSION 1.7.0 : If you are rolling back from version 1.7.0 you will need to play the game in offline mode otherwise the game will crash when trying to use more recent files (which are downloaded on start up) on an older game version.

Huge thanks to Cbenni and TheRTB for their previous patchers.

i remember Gear box released something about how drops are produced. And also what parts that drop had but I'm not quiet sure if they used any programming language to explain it

EDIT: here is the article i was thinking of
http://www.gearboxsoftware.com/community/articles/1087
So what I've gathered from that article is that there is no seeding really. Having a save file is actually really not a problem in terms of RNG. So unless there are other concerns...

Loot being determined on kill is a great thing to know, I'm kind of sad I didn't come across that when I searched for "loot generation in Borderlands 2." Could have saved a lot of trouble. For me personally, I'm still against premades, but that's mostly just my opinion, as most of my concerns have been answered. That being said, it'd be worth waiting a bit to see if anyone else brings any further issues to the table before anyone says they're okay or not.

e: Clarification on what my concerns around premades were for reference if needed:
1) Timing discrepancies which Penta helped prove didn't matter (Thanks again Penta)
2) Loot being manipulated by the save file being the same each time (Not 100%, but okay with it, lol)
*The above link simply points out that loot is determined upon death of the enemy, which is fine for my concerns, but it isn't actually an explanation of how everything in the RNG system works together, which we're likely never going to get. I'm satisfied with the data presented enough to say that the save file itself does not affect what is dropped by enemies.

I suppose if they end up being allowed, the logical start point for timing is going to be what was originally proposed (SDA timing - player gaining control of character) since that would just make sense and it's the easiest way to do it. Just to clarify the exact start point, we mean after claptrap shuts up and the player is allowed to move around, correct?

There's also the question of what we're going to do about all the records in the main post. What are people's opinions on these? Do we re-time them, invalidate them, or...? Are co-op runs still going to be timed off the host specifically or will that be affected at all (i don't see how it would, but may as well be thorough here)?

The more stuff we get cleared up the better, thanks for everyone's input on everything.
I think records should be invalidated until they are re-timed, or beaten with the new timing. Honestly they need to be wiped simply because some of us have been running at a massive disadvantage and not known about it.

Co-Op may as well stay on host timing as the loads can be variable across computers and the host is often the first to load in anyways.

The question does need to be asked if the title screen is going to be counted in Co-Op runs towards time. I personally wouldn't like to see it as it makes people with worse internet/load times at a disadvantage again, but it opens the option for people to mess around in the title for whatever reason. Even if we're unanimous on it it still should be brought up.

I think a wipe or re-time on some of the more current ones (The Maya run by Penta, for example) is probably best as well personally.

edit: On the bright side, it would give players a reason to actually run some of the characters more.

That's an interesting point to bring up about the title screen/menu screen, didn't think about that. If we're going off Host time, it won't really matter will it? That being said, it would probably be important to state that players should get back in the game as soon as they possibly can instead of messing around in the menu during serious attempts. The only way I could see it being abused is if the players stayed out of the game long enough for someone to complete an objective that is faster if done only by 1, 2, or 3 people instead of the rest being there. That being said, are there any objectives you could actually do that quickly before the other players could join back in even if you factor in terribad internet/load times? I guess vendor farming maybe, but no actual progress is made if nothing is found really.
Run with 2's
I feel like the timer should just keep going so long as people are actually doing something in game, if someone has bad internet the other 3 can farm vendors while the one sits out for a minute or two. This should not matter if host time is being recorded. The one sitting out is still a part of the run, them being out for farming i do not think should be considered an issue.
Well, I was more talking in terms of sitting in the title screen waiting for everyone to connect. If we would cut that time out along with loading times or leave that in the final time. Again I am for leaving it out, but was just wanting to have input.
Run with 2's
Cutting it out sounds good, so long as it isn't abused.

Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
as far as added time goes this was a test done by Your_Name_Here way back when, The second is significantly faster than the first, however, upon looking at IGT it was marked as slower .... the first one was from desktop the second was a load without exiting back to desktop but if penta says his testing found different then I don't know.

Also my segmented run each time I did a segment by restoring the save WITHIN the game my segment times were a good 4-5 seconds longer.
Sorry Judgy but I think the IGT discussion is quite proved to be over. What the old tests didn't take into account were the loading times of area transitions being add to IGT. Those additions happen independently from where you start your game, desktop or being already open, and whatever is the game progress, new game or not.

Now for the records listed here, they should all be cleared. Only records timed by RTA w/o loads should be listed in this page.

To avoid people losing their hard work if you wish to re-time your current runs as discussed they are as follows:

Edit# Might be best if Co-op runs are timed from the host, but this can be done by any member of the running team.

OOOOOOOKKKK.... so what happened? is there any place were the official timing/rules are posted??

PS sorry TheAngryPanda for not posting that earlier
Speed > Safety
Oh, no biggie Ryxil, I was just saying i was surprised that i didn't stumble upon when searching myself. Cheesy

What's happened (as I understand it) is that the timing method is changed to RTA w/o Load Times. The reason the records are pulled down at the moment is because they're not accurate and until someone either posts new, and hopefully better, times or re-time the old ones. It's sort of like how BL1 handles timing, i think. (Feel free to correct me if this is wrong anyone)
ryxill we agreed to consider posting times in RTA (with loads) on the leaderboards only to not demotivate people from running and submitting their times. But on this thread only RTA w/o loads will be posted.

Still, if you want to submit your time in RTA to be in the leaderboards just ask for it.

New 2 player Co-Op record. 2:02:26.67 w/o Loads
So, I'm not a runner of this game, but let me play devil's advocate here for a moment. Feel free to correct me on any wrong points.

1. Runs of this game are over 2 hours or 3 hours long, depending on category.
2. Loading times are not a very significant part of this time.
3. Differences in loading times are also not very significant.
4. You're currently unaware of how long character movement is registered during loading times.
5. You're currently unaware what the impact of longer load times is on said character movement.
6. According to the leaderboards, the smallest difference in top times is over 3 minutes.
7. It's, again, a 2-3 hour run, laden with RNG that can make or break your run at any time.

Considering points 1 through 7, it sounds to me, as an outsider to the speedrun itself, that you're all spending INFATHOMABLE AMOUNTS OF EFFORT on something that is more than likely to NEVER MATTER AT ALL.

Now contrast this with the following statement from a certain twitch viewer: "Wait wasn't it teh Borderlands 2 community complaining about how resetting was hard and now they want to time their world records without the easy in game time?"

I mean, I'm just saying.
Edit history:
penta: 2014-04-22 06:50:28 pm
1. Yeah

2. 10% of the run's time or more depending on the person's PC. For me thats a lot.

3. They are. For world record matters.

4. If thats a 1 minute of "movement during loading screens" thats too much.

5. ?

6. Thats RTA comparison, thats only there as reference so people don't feel demotivated to run the game because they will have to retime their runs in order to submit to the leaderboards

7. Yes.

Speedrunning is all about effort, dedication... . Don't want that? Just stop.

Quote from penta:

oh damn should've come up with that argument when we were talking about premade save files
I only agree with the premade save files because it's something a SDA mod agreed with being used although I never saw any SDA mod saying anything in this topic.

So the only way to stop this discussion is to have a member of SDA to analyse the situation and give his approval or disapproval.
Are you the Borderlands 2 speedrunning community, or are you the SDA community?
well their answer was that it's up to the community, they considered it fine at the time, considering the save file no longer gets a penalty it might be different.
I'm a part of the BL2 community and SDA community, what are you talking about?

I partially agree with the copy pasta you brought here from Broman's stream, but it only reffers to a battle of egos, nothing that contributes to the community.
I don't feel that using the splits timer is fine at all, when I need to save and quit for 10 minutes to get the RNGesus to give me a rocket launcher or a shotgun I don't what that counting against my run.
Edit history:
Onin: 2014-04-22 07:07:40 pm
I don't think anyone has submitted a single BL2 run to SDA yet, so why would you, as a community of BL2 speedrunners, care about SDA rules? SDA shouldn't even be a factor in those decisions, it should be an afterthought. If SDA doesn't agree with whatever rules you prefer to speedrun under, then either they just override them with their own rules (as far as timing is concerned), or you just continue not submitting runs and enjoying speedrunning on your own terms.
Edit history:
penta: 2014-04-22 07:08:28 pm
if BL2 speedrunning wasn't a part of SDA, this thread wouldn't even exist.

Submitting a run is a whole another subject. Don't try to use that as an argument.
