Tricks, Guides and Patcher:

Quote:
Routing: While this changes all the time mainly due to my segmented run requiring more and more Tiny Improvements to save mere seconds, we do have general routing guides in video form created by Professor Broman,
Part One
Part Two
Part Three

Tricks: can generally be found by either going to my Youtube which has most of the skips / glitches OR you can just read through everything in this thread Smiley or just post your question most of us are perfectly happy to give you the answer.

Patcher:

DrMalcom's V1.8.4 to 1.1.0 Patcher.
Quote from 'drMalcom':
Remove the DLC's you don't need from the DLC folder inside the "data/Bl2_1.8.4_to_1.1.0.xdpatch" directory. I don't know which one is Gaige).

Cbenni's 1.7.0 to 1.6.0 to 1.3.1 to 1.1.0 Patcher: This Patcher will roll your game back to versions 1.7 / 1.6 / 1.3.1 &  1.1.0, should you wish to restore your game to the most recent version you can roll forward using the patcher or let stream update the game itself.
Patcher

VERSION 1.7.0 : If you are rolling back from version 1.7.0 you will need to play the game in offline mode otherwise the game will crash when trying to use more recent files (which are downloaded on start up) on an older game version.

Huge thanks to Cbenni and TheRTB for their previous patchers.

Leaving it to preference is the same outcome as save files being allowed, and we also only have had 3 people comment on the issue. We need more of the community to make a decision like that.

Also, I'm willing to change my opinion. It sure as hell doesn't sound like you are.

On the contrary, I don't see a good enough reason to NOT use a save file.

Others have already stated their opinion, why are we having this discussion again? The switch from IGT to RTA w/o Loads did not affect it except losing the 3 second penalty. Maybe we should add 3 seconds so you guys are happy?

If other people aren't willing to discuss or state their opinion then it proves further that other people don't seem to care anymore.
We're having the discussion again because there never was a decision. Opinions were stated, yes but it was left open ended. Until a decision has been made save files can't be used.
I'm still fully against pre-made saves. It's just lazy and not really needed. As FC stated before, there's tons of potential weapons to use that would still be at competitive times throughout the beginning of the game, so why do we NEED to have a perfect one? The answer is we don't, and won't until the times are pushed so low that the minimal amount of time it actually saves us is actually needed. At which point, it might be worth bringing this conversation up again in order to perhaps use that specific argument as it's basis. But currently, it really is just lazy, especially considering how relatively high the chances for a decent starter are. It's kind of pathetic that we do this where other games with many times lower chances of even having a starting scenario available don't have some savestate or pre-made file they just load up to bypass the beginning RNG. Which is what we're really doing by the way, bypassing a mechanic of the game because we're tired of dealing with it. That's just silly, if you can't handle resets, don't reset... Just keep going and see what happens. If the run flops, well shit, try again. If you get a piss poor weapon, oh damn, may as well reset and try again. It's honestly not that bad and even as someone who would reset until I got a perfect rifle to start with, I think it's stupid to use a pre-made.

On top of this, I'd like to second the fact that most of the pre-made saves were made using Gibbed that are being used for this, as people have been pretty open about that. That's editing a game file to achieve a desired result, which regardless of timing methods, start time, or anything else, is against the rules. Another thing to second here is that the conversation between SDA people and others previously said that if the community reached an agreed upon decision, it was fine. So if you want to get literal, that means it's invalid anyways because the community never reached a decision on it. It was just assumed by various people that it was "okay" because someone with a green name on here said so. SDA isn't a regulator of rules in games, the community is, SDA's only actual influence on a game is when it comes to submission rules, and that's generally about the quality of the video/gameplay. So could we stop pretending that conversation makes a damn bit of difference?
NG+- is without Bar and Stash (JK) The most useless idea ever. I say if you use Save Files which I don't agree with unless learning or just like practicing I or just in general not running for stuff not leaderboards  related etc, so bring up my next point I also don't think it should be on the leaderboards with other people who reset and are not guaranteed a perfect sniper, smg, or AR even tho you don't really use much other than the sniper. Also, a new category could be created for using them but that would cause more trouble and more problems around the same thing which pretty much would make it usless to do, on the other hand people can stop bitching about resetting and just dealing with that they get. RNG is part of the game and if your going to speedrun a game involving RNG, so if you don't wanna deal with the RNG then why run a game so heavy on it. This is my position on the subject. So yea if you disagree go ahead you can bitch about why your right just like I can but in the end bitching won't get us any where.

We never needed save files. That's not the point, Panda.

So now it's a dick waving competition about which speedgame has more RNG at the start? "PAH! Borderlands 2? You guys use save files in that game, PATHETIC! I run Pokemon, which is a reset 5 minutes into the story. Ha, what a loser, can't even deal with a little RNG." That's not the point, Panda.

Lazy...? It's smart. Why limit yourselves when save files are in no way detrimental or advantagous to your time, while saving you from having to wait a year before you can even START? Once again, that's not the point, Panda.

Other sniper rifles are too much slower, that's not going to happen.

And wow.  The only valid point I've seen against save files is that you created them at a different point, and you can Gib them for the gear rather than resetting for them. Let's talk about that rather than calling eachother lazy.

Maybe we can find a way to prove that we created our save file from scratch, and never edited it.
I know how we can do that, when you create a save file, it has a time stamp. If you edit a file and save over it using Gibbed, the time stamp will change. Create a video or something of yourself creating the file and looking at the time stamp, copying the file, and continuing on the copied file to check the sniper.

If someone wants to go to those lengths to run with a save file, they can feel free.
Twitch highlight* rather than a video.
Half of the community disagrees with you. 50% isn't enough to warrant their use.

Also, you lose at most 15 seconds to not having a 48 with perfect play. They really aren't necessary.
If you have enough time to play a game then you have time to reset for what you want. -Me talking to people on skype.
^ on purpose meant to be stupid cause banana didnt get that.

Just because it's not necessary doesn't mean it shouldn't be an option. I'm not saying they should be mandatory, like what the fuck guys.

I'm not saying we need them, I'm saying IT SHOULD BE AN OPTION. If you feel like it's necessary to reset, go for it. If you feel it's unfair for others to be using them because they have a perfect sniper and you don't, then say so.

Also, you can always reset for a perfect sniper.
We understand that this is about the option. It never was mandatory even when we took it upon ourselves to start using them in the first place. All I want out of this is a definitive answer whether you can use them or not. So far it's about 50/50.

I say that if someone using a save file is doing World Record attempts, they should prove that their save file was never edited with a Twitch highlight. If they edit the file, it changes the timestamp. That is my proposed compromise.

If the problem with the Gibbed file is out of the way in your eyes, what to do about the fact that, well, it's a save file rather than being a new game, so the character was created long ago.

Add penalty time? It kinda worked with IGT, but we need to find solutions.
Why would going for world record require proof? Why not everyone that uses a save file at all? World record means so little and is an even smaller population of the runners.

Any time penalty that could be added would be pretty arbitrary in terms of RTA though. I can't think of anything in that vein that would really "make things fair."

Everyone using one as well, then. I said that before but forgot at the time, I think.

Yeah, I really don't know if that's going to work out.

Everyone has to make their own save file with proof as well, because we need to be sure that it is legitimate.
Put on the shelves since 2012
Okay, so the entirety of the basis of the argument from the opposition is that "it's lazy," and "not new game."

I have seen literally zero valid points so far.
You are taking the stance where save files are this thing that are valid until we can prove without a doubt that there's something wrong with them, and actually the situation is the exact opposite.

You need to prove to us that they are necessary or worth it, and there are no valid points on your side either. This is a "they are not allowed unless we come to the conclusion that they are" type thing, as that's been the entire conversation since the very first time this was brought up. We started using them way too early before. That's the only reason the conversation is still going. We never came to a decisive conclusion as a community.

I think proving the validity of the save files is definitely a step in the right direction though.

So, I didn't really weigh in on this last time because I had literally just started running and didn't feel informed enough to have an opinion on the matter, but here's my two cents this time.

I like the idea of the convenience of the save file, especially as someone who has extremely limited time available to run. Knowing I can sit down and just start my run because I have an ideal start waiting for me is very tempting.

That being said, if the files/weapons were created using any external program they are, in my opinion, completely invalid as one of the big points of speed running is that it's done using nothing but the mechanics (intended or glitched) of the game. However, if someone were to take the time to create some method to verify that the file was originally created by 100% in game mechanics (basically if you could prove you reset for your base save file that you start with), then I'd say it's usable.

Just my thoughts, take it or leave it.

Edit: Apparently TFC and I are of one mind here, as we posted generally the same concept within 30s of each other.
Also, I'd like to mention everyone is both okay with resetting and against save file use in co-op runs. Why would there be any difference between them in this issue?
Put on the shelves since 2012
I was never against using a save file for co-op runs.
I don't know if my words still mean anything in the community since I've been away for a long time but I'll give my opinion about it, keeping it simple.

You want to use it the save file? Fine, use it (I would use it btw). Does it grants you the possibility to submit a run? Thats what all the drama is about right?

Hard to tell if its ok or not, but you know what, why do you care so much about it. If we all stop to think the essence of speedrunning is having fun with the challenge it brings to games we like to play, improving over and over your own way to play the game (that includes the choice to use a save file).

I really wish everyone just stop to discuss about this and do what they think its the best and most fun to run.

PS.: forgot my password here and I was lazy to go recover it since I wanted to reply as soon as saw this :p

PS+.: I don't want to be part of this discussion, just felt obligated to say what I think about it.
I don't like the idea of using 2 characters created at different points, but yeah, it's pretty much the same thing. They're at the same point in the story, neither of them have progressed yet.
Honestly, I think if people are willing to prove that their save files were achieved legitimately, it would be the best solution at this time. Since we're divided on the issue and there are really no points on either side that we can even attempt to convince each other with, a compromise is only reasonable

I'd like to apologize for bringing this up again.
So, does anyone have an idea for verifying save files, apart from the highlight video idea that Blackwayv had, or is that the best we have?
