Haters gonna hate
http://www.archive.org/details/Speed_Demos_Archive_PROMO_Awesome_Games_Done_Quick

We've got LQ, MQ, HQ, and IQ available (thanks nate).  So go get it, and then go forth and post it places!  Seriously, if you have a youtube, screwattack, *insert any other video hosting site* account, host this video there.  Let's get the word out!

___________________________________________________________________

I'll dispense with my usual prose-y thread beginnings and get right to the point.  We need a promo vid, and in a hurry.

I've had an idea for a song choice for a while now, and here it is:

On the video I'm thinking from the start to ~2:30 (yes, way longer than last years), as a plus and minus though the mp3 on the guy's site isn't identical (Link to that here, get the English version, what's in the video starts at 1:38 on the mp3).  On the plus side the GlaDOS sample at the end is gone, on the minus side the beat through that last stretch doesn't sound as good IMO.  Regardless, this is the best idea that I've had, and we need to run with something here.  If people hate it and somebody else is sitting on an idea, by all means throw it out there, but we can't spend too much time in discussion as we should have a finished product together by Dec 15th at the absolute latest , and it's not like we're done when we pick a background track.

What else is there?  Clips and text of course.  A rough idea of what I'm thinking for this track (timestamps correspond to the youtube vid).

0:00 - 0:30:  Text talking about last year's marathon and how it went really well (over 11K for charity!).  Clips from games that were in last year's event and will be in this year's.

0:31 - 0:44:  Text saying how not everything was perfect.  Clips from last year's event where things don't go ideally (no huge mistakes, but errors that will be noticeable to most).

0:45 - 0:47:  Text:  "And while everything didn't go according to plan. . ."  Clip has to be glitchy shredder after stage 2 in TMNT.

0:48 - 0:51:  Same text as above, clip Wart's weird death from SMB2.

0:52 - 2:15:  Text:  "We're doing it again!" to start, from there play the bigger and better angle.  Stress more hours and more games from more generations.  Highlight big series with multiple games (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man,  Castlevania).  Highlight a few bigger standalones too, though maybe not in the actual text (thinking a "Many - many - more" series probably with Chrono Trigger and . . . two others).  Mention that there's giveaways available towards the end.  Finish with "SDA proudly presents".

Clips:  Lots of them (this is where help is really needed).  Clips should from games we're playing (duh) be ~7 seconds or less (might consider one or two longer ones, but 7 seconds is pushing it as is, 3-5 is about ideal).  Clips don't necessarily need to showcase a super amazing trick, but should showcase good play, something that'll make the average viewer that knows the game go "nice").  Obviously, if we run with the showcasing big series idea (which I think we should) we'll need clips from games in those series.  I'm thinking ~8-10 seconds per series and probably 3 each for the "many, many, more" bit, so if we run with what's listed above that's about half the time of the block right there.

As for specific clip ideas, the only one I really have in mind is deflecting fireballs back on Mundus 2 in Devil May Cry for ~1:19 - 1:22, I'm admittedly biased though. Smiley

2:16 - 2:30:  Three cards, 5 seconds each.  First one showing our eventual banner (need one of those too >_>), 2nd showing PCF's logo and a little blurb saying 100% of all donations go to them, 3rd with January 6th 2010, http://speeddemosarchive.com, See you there.

So that's what I've got.  Let me know what you think.  Obviously need help with the clips, and if anyone wants to offer text suggestions I'll glady take them.

*********NOTE ON SUGGESTING CLIPS**************

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT follow my shoddy example in this post and say "this part in that one vid for that one game."  Take the time to clearly spell out which run, segment, and a time stamp for what you're suggesting.  Definitely don't have time to hunt these down with vague directions.
Thread title:
53:50 to whenever of my any% metroid fusion run.
My name is unpronounceable
How about a clip of tjp's any% SS of DKC.  Skipping the minecarts at around 14:10 would be a very nice clip to include.

Obscure games ftw
Nice song choice, the 'mistake' (for lack of a better word) at 0:47 had me go "what?"
Let's see...
too lazy to hunt down timestamps on anything, but the final launch to the hut at the end of the perfect run (or Bowser eating the Grand Star right at the end) would be neat.
Actually, those womn't take too long...

bunch of classic nintendo run moments:

Mega Man 2 Normal with zip glitches | 5:28-5:33 (Jumping on the edges of the thunder guys' platforms in Air Man stage)

This starts past the hit Seth takes at the beginning of this edge-hopping sequence and it's just mind-boggling

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! | Segment 4: 1:37-1:43 (Moment he TKOs Tyson)

He TKOs Tyson sub-2:30, yea

Super Mario Bros.: Lost Levels, FDS version | 4:35-4:37 (clearing the almost-screen-high ledge by jumping on the bouncing koopa)

For the average viewer, this might be the most pure 'wow' moment of the run. Alternatively, you could also do 5:14-5:18 (entering the upside-down pipe) if you want to go more for the wtfglitch factor but that kind of thing probably shouldn't be going in a marathon promo video.

Ghosts 'n Goblins | 4:38-4:40 (perfect red devil kill)

He doesn't slow down at all AND uses a suboptimal weapon to do it.

Castlevania | 6:48-6:53 (Harpy/Flea Man portion of Stage 4)

Holy waters are used perfectly to clear enemies without slowing down once, and it ends with a nice surprise rosary. Alternatively, you could do 12:30-12:35 for the end of the Dracula phase 2 battle where Simon gets cornered and has 0 spare hits left.

Super C, Any% | 7:16-7:23 (Area 4 8-Prongs Boss)

This is just ridic, and probably the best visual display of Heidman's prodigious mashing abilities in the run.

Super Mario 64, NTSC 16-Stars | 14:38-14:43 (Long jumping on the edge of the final stretch of Bowser in the Fire Sea)

In Myles' words: "The long jumps on the edge at the end were masterful, thrilling, breathtaking, etc."

Contra III: The Alien Wars | 4:11-4:15 (Stage 3, 1st miniboss)

Just looks really cool with the 1-pass kill.

I also think a crazy awesome moment from a Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island 100% IL should be included, but I haven't watched most of them and don't know of any such moments myself

btw: breakdown, i really like your promo vid idea, nice thinking!
Not a walrus
If you use Blaster Master (and you should because a bunch of people were asking about it! Wink ), use a section of the Crab boss from my deathless run, I suggest 21:38-21:45.
You got a deletion wish?
Music-wise, I'dve used Miz's entrance theme "I came to play" cause it starts with "AWWWWWWWWWESOMMMMMMMMMME!"

Still Alive, ugh.  Something about that song I don't like but really don't know what.
I survived MIKE-Fest 1
Just s Idea: Maybe a sentence like: The speedrunner going to the extreme again on the game and on them self for you, Than playing the video were mike drinks the hot spicy sauce or some sleeping peoples how really fight it, something like that
train kept rollin
I always thought this would make a good speedrun montage song.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
If you need a small clip for the 0:31-0:44 part, the Classic Games Done Quick TMNT 4 video where I die is probably a good moment. 12:02-12:07
Exoray
When suggesting clips of cool tricks, please do only include tricks that are actually going to be performed during the marathon. Otherwise we're just promoting something we can't live up to.
Moo! Flap! Hug!
Another suggestion for the 0:31-0:44 portion is the unintentional death warp in Zelda 2 (23:20 of the Zelda 2 CGDQ video).  That said, the humour of the moment may be lost without the context (i.e., the fact that it was unintentional, the commentary laughter, etc.).

good point moooh, though it is questionable whether this would actually come into play at all among the broad viewership. still, my suggested mega man 2 and lost levels clips shouldn't be used then.

I think this is the perfect clip, IMO.

Honestly, it doesn't need context because falling straight into a pit that is easily jumped over is funny in its own right.

One problem with that clip:  we're not playing Zelda 2 this year Tongue

One I was thinking for that section was the bit in sonic 2 hilltop 2 where mike89 missed the door in the rising lava room, but had the presence of mind to grab the wall with knuckles.

@Tigger:  I don't think we should use commentary video since the ustream quality is kinda crap.  If it's possible to do such a thing, maybe could add a few audio samples (@nate:  is such a thing possible?)

Liking the suggestions so far, keep em coming people.
Willing to teach you the impossible
Mike, did you add a low% to Contra and Super C via donations? If Super C is donated to a Low%, could use a clip of stage 1 jumping through the 3 grenades (given it is Low%) because it is guaranteed trick or even stage 7 walking under the purple things projectiles as I do this in both Low and Any%. Just some ideas, I also have an idea for X2 but I will have to post a vid of me doing it because it is rather hard to explain.

Done Heidman. Just show me the X2 trick on IRC sometime.

Are you really that confident in Contra and Super C?

Suggestion for music - "We Want Fun" by Andrew W. K.  It's a hysterically lame song, but it's still really fun and goes well with the theme.  You may remember that I used this in one of those SDA music videos that used to be so popular (btw, too bad that fad died out so abruptly).  Click here if you want to check out the song.  It's another song that has lyrics (if you can call that garbled yelling, lyrics), but that doesn't seem to be a problem here.

As for 31-44, maybe Tri-hex's goofup in Yoshi's Island?  I can't remember where it happened, but Tri-hex basically got cocky and tried to pull off some move and died at a boss when he otherwise would have easily been in the clear.
Fucking Weeaboo

2-8, after he beat the ghost in a bottle.  He tried to pile drive so that he'd either be just barely off screen or about to fall off when the game would auto halt his progress (as the boss explodes) but started too soon.

^ Thanks! Yeah, that was definitely it.  Now that I think about it, that might have been one of the best goofs of the entire marathon.

I am better at Low% in Contra than I am with weapons... weird. I know this is cocky, but Super C is my bitch. Only reason I don't have the perfect runs yet is because I reset for the slightest error.

I will stream the X2 trick later tonight. I just got off work and I want some sleep. Well, its not really a trick, but more of something that looks neat. Good for a promo vid I think.
For a clip of mine, I'd suggest 25:37-25:40 on my Dr. Mario 64 classic mode, where I get a 4 way combo off.
SEGA Junkie
I've had some ideas for text in the main segment of the video, but didn't really have anywhere to post it before. Now I do.

One is "The most peculiar things happen while the world is watching" - link with clips such as a few of trihex's hilarious deaths in YI. Actually maybe this fits better in :31 - :44, I dunno.

The other is basically my original idea for the entire main segment, where the text goes like this:

50 awesome gamers playing 100 awesome games in 100 awesome hours.
That's twice the games.
Twice the series.
Twice the speedrun races.
Twice the shirt ripping. (ok maybe not...)
Any other "twice" lines you can think of, ending with
Twice the awesomeness.

This is Awesome Games Done Quick.

Of course then you can just match clips to lines quite easily, eg. take something from the SMB3 race for the races line.

Music (it's a great track, listen to all of it):

Resident Evil: Director's Cut - Arrange mode as Chris: 33:06 - 33:11 (knife and pause cancelling to grab the book)
Resident Evil 2  - Leon A Japanese version run: 20:16 - 20:21 (baiting and dodging a gaggle of zombies in a narrow space)
Resident Evil 3 - Easy Mode Run: 8:59-9:03 (Dodging Nemesis while he charges in a narrow hallway)
Resident Evil 4 - New Game run segment 11: 1:40- 1:50 (El Gigante skip, even people who know nothing about the game will be like 'wtf cool')
MGS: TTS: 9:21-9:31 (Quick Ocelot, and the whiteout could work for a transfer or something)

I can find some much better videos for the panel video.
spread the dirt to the populace
i keep thinking something from cv3 should be in there, but i don't know if the runs are going to be on the site by the time of the marathon and nothing is guaranteed to be in the marathon due to character donations

those sypha tricks in level 7 with ice spell (sorry don't have timestamp) are the main thing that comes to mind, as they would be doable in the marathon if sypha ended up winning.

alternately, i could make a quick clip of that swinging glitch in the waterfall in super cv4.  but maybe you want to save something that hype for the event itself...
