here's a test i did while i was working on the dvd faq. it's a "statid", short for station id, the last of several i did for the video dvds. it was the first thing you saw when you put in a dvd. enjoy.
the music is the gunstar heroes stage clear fanfare. worked quite well with mike uyama's dvd including gunstar heroes. i should really post that one too ... too bad no one bitten by the dvd bug is going to be able to buy one now.
I literally watched that like seven or eight times, consecutively. I wish I had known those were on the DVD's this whole time! Brilliant.
Yes, I, too, am a little confused as to the purpose of this, though. Can I assume, like Tub, that a similar tag would be applied to all of our videos, or at least to any future endeavors?? If so, it would be enticing to produce several versions; maybe one for older consoles, one for newer, or maybe ones specifically catered to "classic" games (Mario Brothers/Metroid Prime/Sonic 2) or first-person shooters...
Of course, maybe just one all-around eclectic version would be more thorough...
Filefront was doing maintenance work, that's why it wasn't available.
I watched the video and it definitely needs some work. First, get rid of that whistling sound effect at the beginning, it sounds horrible. Second, why did all the scene changes have a little arrow at the top left corner? Third, the music has a lot of energy to it, and so I think you should use scenes that also have a lot of energy, like the Sonic and Mario clips. The clips from 0:15 to 0:48 seem out of place.
Sonic 2 had a fine clip, though maybe it went on for too long. After Sonic hits the Ring Monitor, you should throw in another Sonic 2 video (Metropolis Zone 1 has some good stuff, lots of speed dashes, so does Wing Fortress) or go onto the next game. The Resident Evil 4 clip you provided really felt out of place too, since Leon's just kinda jogging along. And Metal Gear Solid's being a few smacks of a boss wasn't that grand. Also, Sonic Advance was a good place to look for speed clips, but the fact is that one isn't all that impressive to begin with (The author even admits that he wasn't trying in the comments since the run ended the level prior) surely there's a better example SOMEWHERE throughout the run. I like the 26 second Neo Green Zone Act 1 which is ridiculously fast. Secret Base 2 is also good. Casino Zone' 5:30 to 5:55 is awesome. Egg Rocket Pad Zone, or whatever one where Sonic's boarding the Death Egg has a ton of great, well planned and spiffy looking jumps scattered throughout. The level after tha is great for a full level segment, and the first Robotnik Fight in X-Zone is great for this video.
I'll look through the runs I got but I do agree that the clips selected need some weeding out. I'm not saying that all these games shouldn't be represented, but the clips provided feel out of place in the context of the music, and the quality of some of the playing and all...
Anyway, a lot of games should show up in the video in one way or another. Go for the major franchises. The 102% DKC2 video has some good moments scattered throughout like Rickety Race and Animal Antics, where as the Any % GBA has a great Mudhole Marsh from start to finish (26:25-27:40) and the Parrot-Chute Panic stage (35:15-35:55) is great in itself
There's a great moment in the Yoshi's Island speed run where Trihex comes close to death from falling AND death from the timer running out at the same time with him saving Baby Mario at the last second. You saw the toadies and everything flying around. I need to find where that was though...
The Devil May Cry's 100% has tons of great stuff scattered throughout. The Phantom fight in Mission 3 is a great WTF moment to people who thought Air Raid was the end-all, be-all strategy.
Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero runs HAVE to be represented. If that game isn't fast enough, I don't know what is. Mega Man X's Armored Armidillo or whatever his name is, from 12:35 to... 13:09. Just watch it and listen to it with Audio. It's GREAT, and the mine cart makes for a great comparison to how fast X is moving with and without it. Not to mention all the great jumps. 18:33-18:45 is also good for a quick blurb.
The Contra clip was good though. I'd stick with that.
A boss fight from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would be good in itself. The 70th star in the Mario 64 speed run HAS to show up here (59:09-59:50 and on further thought, it'd be a great finisher or starter to the video). Same thing with Metroid. The 1% Metroid Fushion Single Segment run has to be good for SOME footage, right? Especially that boss fight against the water serpent.
Drag Katamari Damarci in there! Get any moment from the Half-Life runs! Get the Mario Kart 64 Wario Stadium WIth Shortcut Video somewhere in it! There's a lot of videos that you can use for source material that's much better than what you have currently.
Also, I believe Nate did a really spiffy looking promo for EGM or something, right? I wonder if it's still in the forums somewhere... For reference, of course. Remember to list the speed name of the speed run, category and time if anyone wants to see the run after viewing said video.
Thanks for the comments guys they'll defenetly help in the final cut. Yeah some clips are too long and I'll work on that. Psycochild, how'd you know I was gonna include DMC3. Or did you say the first one?
What? No one liked the ProtoMan whistle at the beginning?
There's still some effects I'm planning on adding. Also, I was thinking of having the names of the runners scroll accross the bottom of the screen of the clips, let me know, I think it would be a nice gesture.
as for the arrows at the beginning of some of the clips...I don't want to get into it, but they'll be gone in the end. This is just a demo, I just wanted to show where I was going with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I mentioned the first one, specifically Sternn's excellent Phantom fight in his 100% run. Hell, his entire run is incredible, but the Phantom Fight was the first one that popped into my head when I was thinking of clips. Speaking of which, what clips in general were you thinking of lifting from DMC3? I can maybe help you find something great to look at as well there.
And as for Protoman's Whistle, it sounded.. REALLY bad. I recommend re-recording it if you can instead. Or, you can probably lift it from one of the many Mega Man 3 remixes...
http://www.ocremix.org/songs/Mega_Man_3_ProtoVaffe_OC_ReMix.mp3 Is a good example. Or you can drop the idea entirely. Either which way, the original Whistle you recorded was pretty bad. I "Gacked" and fumbled for the volume control when I first heard it.
