Well it's Vista. What do you expect? Ofcourse it will crap itself. There is a reason why almost everybody skipped it.
I would recommend upgrading to 7...

Otherwise, maybe find an older version of that driver? Maybe newer versions don't work with Vista anymore.

Make sure you are updated to Vista Service Pack 2 (of course, you'll need SP1 first to do that) and then restart the PC, tell the PC you have a device to install, then choose "have disk" in which you need to download Loopy's drivers pack, then select the MAIN FOLDER that houses both the x86 32 Bit Drivers and the x64 64 bit drivers (you could probably also update the drivers as well and choose the main folder with the downloaded drivers in it). I noticed when I tried to install on Windows 7 that I had to do this (yeah, I know you're talking about Vista) because by selecting the x86 32 bit folder, it would not install properly. Your driver you're trying to use states Windows 7 Final driver version, and not ALL Windows 7 drivers and Vista drivers can be cross platform, although it's like that for almost most of the time.

I'm in a hurry for work or else I'd have a better post, but if I get time tonight from work, I'll look up the Hardware ID of the driver and hunt for a version that is higher than that of the build in the picture submited. The Hardware ID can be found in Device Manager, find the driver/hardware in question, open up its properties, click on the Details TAB, then choose "Hardware ID". You're looking for something that looks like this: "VEN_14F1&DEV_2F20" (this is for my Modem, not the 3DS capture board). You only count both sides of the first ampersand ("&") and stop there. Good luck in the mean time. You use your hardware ID to locate the software on the internet.
Do Vista service packs not include previous service packs? They do for every other Windows.

First off, I want to know what service pack his system says, if it says Vista SP2, then he has SP1 as well. I have to go straight to bed shortly, but to answer your question, Vista Service Packs are considered so grand and complex that it does not follow the rule, nor will Windows 7 service packs if one gets released above service pack 1. Vista's service packs as 7's are individual only and do not include the service pack behind it. Regardless, as a technician's word of advice, you always install service packs in the order they got released by, even if it's like Windows XP which contains the previous service packs. This is to enhance the compatibility of software changes and actually reduces some issues that could lead to Blue Screens or rare miscellaneous software conflicts.

So we take the VID of the 3DS capture card: "VID_16D0&PID_06A3". We change the Vendor ID from Hexidecimal (16D0) to Decimal (5840) and Vendor ID 5840 is the MCS Electronics vendor who originally created the USB generic drivers. Now, I can't find a driver pack for generic USB drivers or for MCS Electronics. The drivers were assigned/made  using WinUSB, which version I don't know (1.9 I'm assuming), and the driver is the most up to date one available as far as generic ones go. Seeing how generic things are, I feel positive that it's probably an issue with your Vista installation, not having service packs or being the most up to date with Windows updates, or driver code on your PC is corrupt and trying to install the driver incorrectly (whether it be user or PC), or Loopy has to add a slightly different code to the WinUSB (this is where I get stumped since I don't do driver coding or tweaking). Bleh, so much for technical, huh? I failed. Sad

Make sure you are logged on as the PC's administrator, disconnect yourself from the internet, exit/turn off any/all firewall/antivirus software before proceeding with the steps coming up. How are you installing the device driver? Are you choosing "Update Driver" afterwards and pointing it at the main download folder (unzip into a directory first, don't open up the zip and grab from there--I'm sure you knew that)? I suggest uninstalling the USB drivers while the unit is hooked up, and then without disconnecting it, choose to install new hardware and tell it you have the disk for it. You MUST make sure to install using the main directory of Loopy's "3ds_driver" folder. It contains "amd64" folder and "x86" folder and then a file called "3dscapture.inf". It's important that the PC looks into this directory with these two folders and INF file. The INF file has important information inside of it. Let me know if you have already done this. I tried installing my drivers manually on my Windows 7 32 Bit PC by using the x86 folder and I believe I had the same exact error code as you.

And that reason, I believe, is that driver support was bad at launch and it didn't run well on older computers.
Word spread, and Vista became a hated OS.
Install it today and it would probably work well.
But this really has nothing to do with the problem.

Here's my experience (after fighting with Vista for 5 hours trying to install it).  This is a vanilla x32 Vista install, no service packs or anything else installed except for a video card driver.

- plug in 3DS, tell it to search for drivers online.  After thinking for a while, it decides it's a "winusb device" and installs its own driver which works fine.

- uninstall & delete driver.  Try to install my own driver manually.  Windows gets stuck "installing" for 10 minutes, I give up and reboot.

- After rebooting, windows tries again without asking me what to do.  It sits there "searching preconfigured folders" or somesuch for another 10 minutes.  It uses my driver but reports an error code 18(?).  Reboot again.

- Uninstall and reinstall again (locate folder manually).  This time it works without any problems.

So, I had to futz around with it and reboot but it worked for me.  Maybe 64bit Vista has other issues? Which Vista is your friend using?
The futzing and waiting is mainly from not having the service packs. They addressed for the most part the atrocities of speed and ill thinking and turns it into an "almost Windows 7". Windows 7 is basically a tweaked out Vista SP2 with less fat.
He solved the problem. He didn't have any updated service pack. After updating the system it works for him (at least he told me).

i got the second 3DS and can finally stream DS/3DS games. i feel a bit overwhelmed right now since there's so many games that i didn't finish over the years that now i can finish and stream (and do a marathon lol).
the only thing i find kinda inconvenient is the crappy 3DS i got from ebay since it looks pretty beaten up. i might swap the shell with the shell of my regular 3DS but disassembling that thing is something i don't want to do again anytime soon (i was sweating bullets all the way while putting together the 3DS and everything)
I tried the capture card on my friend's 64-bit Vista with SP2 (wanted to try to stream from there since I can't with my internet speed). I just let it search for the driver and it found the right one pretty quickly, and worked well the whole time.

That what it seemed like when I used Vista with SP2.

So it appears that there is either a regular Windows Update that Loopy got from Microsoft that auto-installed in the background, or the Windows Update in question came automatically with his Vista revision (all the time excluding Service Packs). Each time an OS is released, and as time goes on for it, it gets slipstreamed with new updates as available. For example, a Vista OS disc 6 months newer than another Vista OS disc (or even PC build versions) will have incorporated the Windows Updates within the 6 months period of time.

To make things easier, especially since Vista is "barbaric", it'd be prudent to mention the compatibility for Vista to just be out right "Vista Service Pack 2 x32/x64". This ensures that software burps are ironed out and will provide the best usability for your customers.

As for Windows 8, everything should work just fine since 99% of things compatible with Windows 7 will work on Windows 8 (and moreso since it's a generic driver and Microsoft loads more and more generic drivers over time into their OS releases). I want to say maybe 60-80% of things that work on Vista will work on Windows 8 and then 20-50% success rate for Windows XP items to be compatible, providing it's not 8 Bit or 16 Bit programming code. The only version of Windows 8 that WILL NOT BE COMPATIBLE (unless a hack comes along) is Windows 8 RT. Windows 8 RT will be exclusively workable for ONLY Windows App Store downloads/purchases. In order to do such a thing for compatible, you need it branded/checked by the Microsoft team. If it's something you wish to make money on, you must pay a fee (yearly or 1 set???) to make it appear through the Windows App Store. Windows RT is mainly just a slimmed down more naked version of Windows made for mobile type devices (netbook MAYBE, cell phones, tablets) and not designed for desktops and laptops and touch screen all in one desktops. Windows RT will be on extremely few devices out there apparently, and I think 1 of 2 or 3 tablets getting released will have RT as the mentioned OS. Otherwise, most tablets will have Windows 8 (a normal version).

***Now, with Windows 8 tablets coming out, they will have up to 2-3 USB ports and you can finally use USB items such as printers, scanners, 3DS Capture CARDS (OMGZ), etc, on a tablet PC.

My work place is now certifying me as a Microsoft Advisor and will give me a full version of the final release form of Windows 8 (which tiered version is unknown, but they've been pushing Professional lately--hopefully that). I plan on checking it out and unless someone beats me to it, I can post x32 and x64 compatibility with the 3DS Capture Device. I do not know when I will be given the OS disc.
cool...i will be getting windows 8 full version soon as well.....now all i have to do is buy a good phone which is totally off-topic...
Just installed the final release of Windows 8 Pro (64 bit) I got from my school's MSDN AA program on a VHD. It installed the 3DS Capture Device driver right away, and works great with the capture software provided by Loopy.

Both capture cards for both of my systems came back great from katsukity, fast as well. Glad everything worked out fine.
Lucky you Cyber. I need to get one. I'm going to have to make an investment on getting it.
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
one thing i find funny is that DS games look good with the capture card but look so bad on the actual 3DS if they're fitting the whole screen. playing Pokemon Black 2 was kind of weird since the footage on the pc looked much better than what i was looking at in the 3DS.

so far, the 3DS capture has worked great overall. i finished OoT 3D 100% and got the whole thing recorded for demonstration (it was in no way a speed run lol :p). i also did an MK7 all cup tour (just playing every cup on sucession since there's no VS 32 races option like in MKW) and messed around with some ambassador games.
pretty good job from Loopy.

Is there any reason why the recorded video is quite a bit darker than the picture on the 3DS itself? Also, does anyone know if I shouldn't use YUY2 with Lag and instead use something like RGB(s), even if I'm then converting to H.264?

I've included a quick sample I recorded and also noticed blurry/unreadable text. Anyone suggest a way to tweak all of this as I'm loving how simple it was to install and use on Win 7 64-bit.

Different color space.  Anyone want to make a ICC profile for the 3DS? Tongue

Oh, ok. I thought being direct feed it'd be 1:1. No matter, anyone got suggestions on best Lag profile to use *YUY2 or RGB)?

Oh and getting US $1,625.00 for your last auction!? Shocked Shocked Shocked Utter madness, but well played sir. It's a quality finish and supply and demand is in full effect. thumbsup

Also, I checked Wine's compatibility in OS X, and no, the Capture App doesn't work in Wine (and I don't expect it to work the way it has to be).

Really... Well I guess I'll just have to buy windows then in order to use this... *sigh* What a let down Sad

This is just unbelieveable. The devices were declared as 200$ Gift and the German Customs wanted 115€ from me!

Go ahead and open a paypal donate, we shall all donate about 2 $ and perhaps that will fix it.

heh i wish this was what happend to me. at least your customs just rip you off and not steal the 3DS outright like the customs of my country.

yeah, that's right. my 3DS was stolen by the motherfucking customs and i'm pissed off now. not as pissed as when my previous 3DS and games were stolen but this year is definitely not my year. to top it, i'll be out of a job in 2 weeks so i can't even save up for another one.
just when you think things can't get worse.... at this rate i won't see the year's end.

I got 3D capture working months ago.  I'm just throwing out half the lines to get 2D.  The main reason I don't have it now is there's hardly any need or demand for it.  Does anyone here use a 3D display with their computer?

My PC has an anaglyph 3D driver so I surmise it should probably work. (It can't hurt to release this as long as it won't make the software unstable...)
