Video clips at Ustream

Sup everyone, I started streaming early this year and am still going.  Thus far I have done speedruns of:

-Castlevania 3
-Castlevania 1
-Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (both SDA-style SS and Nico-style RTA)
-Maximum Carnage
-Wolfenstein 3-D (Episode 1 only so far, also 100% videos of E6M9 and E6M10).

Having completed my console runs of CV3, I am moving on to Super Castlevania 4 and learning that from scratch.  I will continue to work on Maximum Carnage as well, and I may learn Megaman 1 & 2 in the future (need to hit Seth up for glitches).

I almost always stream from emulators, the exception being when I'm at someone's house and they can capture video and stream for console runs.  I always do live commentary and have the stream chat open as I play, as that's a lot of the fun of it!

My stream also has a few bells & whistles which aren't widely used and should add to the fun!  I use a timer on my screen for full run attempts, much like the Nicovideo people, and with the help of Marlie Tang I should be able to start using mIRC scripts soon!  These scripts would allow me to post the overall time after each level as well as the specific level time, and compare those to the current record or my personal record.

My next stream will likely be something short just to test streaming with BSNES.  It's the most accurate SNES emulator but much more resource-heavy than others, so I'm not 100% sure how it would work out for streaming.  I'm thinking a Maximum Carnage run (with an extra Sonic Gun icon I didn't know about before, and a better Carnage strategy) would be a fine test for it!

OK folks, test stream about to begin!  Playing Maximum Carnage in BSNES, also going to try IRC script for the first time.

Alright, so now that the test streams are done, I'm going to do a Mystic Quest SS.  Haven't played this game in forever, so expect a few slipups...

Stream about to begin now!

About to go for a Mystic Quest RTA (not SS!) right now.  Much easier + less annoying + hopefully less death (+ Pazuzu on 6th floor?  ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT)
Holy shit dude, you got banned 0_0

What the bloody hell just happened?

for the few who haven't already heard by now, i've been banned for 24 hours due to a copyright claim by legendary game designer david sirlin

the reason? his pic is my thumbnail

i am dead serious
Sleeping Terror
Wow, that's utterly ridiculous. I actually liked some of Sirlin's writings (I can't speak to what he has to say about fighting games, and I know you don't exactly regard him highly), but there goes any respect I had for him.
contraddicted
Hey hey hey, calm down.

I am honestly with Mr. Sirlin in this case.

If that would be my pic, I would also do anything to get any copy of it off the web too Cheesy
Sleeping Terror
Regardless, that's not the kind of thing copyright applies to or is designed for. Yeah, maybe "lose all respect" is a bit extreme, but given how much copyright gets abused these days, I tend to be pretty annoyed at those who use it inappropriately for whatever reason.

I don't remember quite what the thumbnail was, and I don't know if it had any kind of story behind it, so maybe it was something nasty that should've been taken down (for ethical reasons if not legal ones)...
I don't even know what the fuck this is
No, it was just his image.
Cigar Man
I had never heard of David Sirlin before I read this thread, so I looked him up and found his book Playing to Win (http://www.sirlin.net/ptw).  I really like what I've read so far.
Waiting hurts my soul...
If he took the picture himself, then he has claims to copyright. Otherwise, there's another term for it, and he should have just contacted you and asked you to change it.
Sleeping Terror
Holding copyright on an image doesn't mean that someone else can't use it in ways that constitute fair use. I think a tiny avatar pretty clearly falls under fair use, at least in most cases. (I also think that current copyright law is detrimental to society, and I don't have a high opinion of people who enforce their copyrights as strictly as the law allows for, but that's another matter.)

Edit: Maybe I'm being kinda harsh... but it seems so incredibly rude to pull out legal threats and get someone's channel shut down (albeit only temporarily) over something like this.

Vugmer: Playing to Win is basically the one decent thing he's written and the entire reason he became semi-internet-famous.  Since then he's had a string of game-design failures (e.g. a port of SSF2 Turbo that had more input delay than playing online with Kaillera) and childish/outright hilarious behavior (see: this thread, this video, countless other examples) that have turned him into a running joke.

Anyway, I sent a PM to a fighting-game player I know who happens to be a lawyer with experience in copyright.  He's seeing his family for the weekend and said he'll get back to me on Monday.  I'd just like to be able to make a solid case in the event that he does it again and gets me permabanned, especially since I replaced the picture now.

Man, so tempted to change my stream title to "yomi: the japanese word for reading the mind of the opponent"...

EDIT: No idea if I'll stream tonight.  I'm going to a Guilty Gear/SSF4 tournament today, and then when I get back I'll watch the Summer Jam (major tournament in Philly) stream.  It'll depend on when they close up shop for the night.

OK, about to go live with yet another Mystic Quest RTA attempt!  Can I actually finish the game this time? We'll see...

This is the first time I've seen the beginning of one of these runs. The game has a title screen and everything!

(Edit: Finally loaded, yay. Looks like I wasn't the only one having trouble connecting.)

(Edit again: blah chat died again and it doesn't want to come back.)

Jolly good show!
I'm having problems with the chat too... ustream fucked up again it seems.

I've attached a picture of that blurriness I was talking about. It's focused around two vertical lines 1/4 and 3/4 of the way across the screen (the result of a Moire pattern caused by resizing the width slightly). You should be able to see it pretty easily in the grassy area.

Thanks for all the help, Strangeness & Hanzo!

I tried using native SNES resolution, but 2x that is a bit too small for my tastes.  I'm just going 640x480 for everything now, especially since you can use that for Wolfenstein without any graphical issues.  It's a big enough area for me to play on, and hopefully we shouldn't get any more blurriness!

About to begin another Mystic Quest RTA, since I really want to complete that script for once...
spread the dirt to the populace
OK, finally figured out a good enough solution to the video issues and had my fastest Mystic Quest run yet!

btw, I understand that the intention of these threads is to replace the Ustream chat, but I'm still going to be using the chat for my stuff since you can't use the mIRC scripts on forums.  So check there for updates on my progress/records/etc.!

OK guys, about to go live again with some Wolfenstein 3-D practice, Maximum Carnage, UMK3 practice...
