Thought I'd make a thread for this. Obviously not as good as YI for SNES, but still a whole lot of fun and a good speed game. Categories would be any% of 100% obviously. The problem with 100% is that I think that medals would count toward this. You get medals by landing on a flower when you pass through the goal ring, and you get 1 for each flower you collected in each level. Unless a new method, like the one in YI, is found where you can consistently land ON the flowers, 100% wouldn't be the most reliable category at the moment. As for any%, I've been doing a lot of World 1 runs and I've brought the time down to 15:41. My splits:

1-1: 1:46.3
1-2: 3:34.8
1-3: 4:47.6
1-4: 7:55.0
1-5: 9:19.4
1-6: 10:34.0
1-7: 12:07.6
1-8: 15:41.2

I split on the lag frame during the fade-out after your coins and flowers and stuff are counted at the end of each level. This is pretty optimized, but couple of mistakes were made, mostly in the earlier levels. I also lost 10 seconds on the 1-8 boss, so there's that.
Lastly, I've already found an intro skip. When you start a new game and hit story mode, reset as the screen goes black (go to the home menu, and close and reopen then game). When you boot the game back up it will let you jump into the first level right away. The intro takes 3 minutes 10 seconds, and the reset takes 40 seconds, saving 2 and a half minutes right from the start.

Feel free to post anything you have to contribute or comment on!

Thread title:
I was waiting for that thread! Tongue

I can't record myself playing on a Nintendo 3DS ... So there is a pic of an out of bounds on 2-4.
https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYQHAAABAAC_UqFMcYsZFw

You can clip by touching the top of the moving block , its possible with the block of the right also but the OoB is very small.
There is no use for speedrunning at this spot , maybe somewhere else?!

Cool, definitely something we should look into! Also, I completely forgot about using Miiverse to share pictures. It's an awesome resource!

Edit: How exactly do you go about getting out of bounds there?
Try at the one at the right first , that one is easier!

You have to jump at the right moment when you are close to the wall , when the blue block is moving to the right , jump and try to touch the top of the moving block , if you do it correctly Yoshi will clip the wall without dying. You don't have to move when you jump for clipping , just jumping.

Ok, I actually just did it 3 times. It's not so bad once you get the timing down. This is very interesting, but without the wings it's difficult to keep fluttering for long enough to do much at all. I'll check out 1-8, though, and see if I can do anything with it there! Good find!

Edit: Bad quality camera shot, but here's the OoB in video.

Oh hey, I didn't bother to check for a thread on SDA just yet.  Sick find on the OoB, btw.  I'm pathing the game as I go through my first playthrough, and I don't know if it's as optimized as what you have, damon, but this is what I've done so far:

Can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with! Smiley
Just showing off some strategies here. This isn't meant to represent an optimized IL or anything, there are blatant mistakes, but you'll be able to see what I'm going for. The timer is only for reference!

1-6 definitely has the most notable trick. No 1-5 here 'cause I'm not happy with my strats for that stage yet.

I have currently routed the first 3 worlds.  I have no way to record currently but I did upload a skip in 2-2.  It's the same type of trick you did in 1-1.    I plan to be doing SS runs soon

Good stuff Koffing, found that one myself, bet there's lots of applications for bouncing off enemies. Working on world 2 right now, hopefully get some videos up soon for those, as well as the remaining world 1 stages.
Just found a timesaver in 2-7. In the second room u can "spit-bounce" a lakitu to reach the pink platform early
<(^_^)>
Neat ILs and strats. Has anyone confirmed whether jumping over slopes (uphill or downhill) is faster than running over them?

I'm fairly certain  running is faster than jumping but jumping uphill is slightly faster.  I already jump uphill in 2-5 (Gusty something)  I'm also going to search the spear guy level (which is like 3-5) for potential skips today.  I think I'll find something.
Nice work guys! And yes, I'm also pretty sure jumping is faster than running both uphill and downhill on slopes.

I figured out in 2-4 you can spit bounce with a shy guy going up on the arrow thingie (2nd set) to reach the door early but the camera dosnt cooperate so it's a blind jump on to the shy guy.  In 3-5 all I could find was that you could get through the green platform with the 3 spear guys following it faster with a spit bounce but it isn't really worth it unless you are really confident in your spit bounce skills.
Here's an improved 1-1 video, saving 2 seconds over the previous strats.

Improvements:
-Getting the flower guy instead of shy guy, due to him being on a slope you can jump while tonguing which makes it so Yoshi doesn't pause.
-Additional spit bounce to jump over the checkpoint quickly.
-Better positioning on spit bounce to skip mega egg so that Yoshi doesn't bump into the pipe.
-Jumping instead of running down slope at the end (assumed faster)

Potential improvements to be found added:
-better strategy for picking up a Shy Guy after the checkpoint skip
-landing in front of and jumping over the Shy Guy at the end instead of flutter -> bouncing off him.

Very nice scykoh.  Can't wait to see your world 2 IL's!  (Just saw your 2-1) Hopefully I'll upload some whenever I have the opportunity.  Also are there any more ideas on where to split?  I feel like I will always split late if I try to at the lag frame.  I have considered audio cues or when baby mario first lands on yoshi.
Yeah, lag frame feels a bit awkward at times. When Baby Mario hits Yoshi feels a bit awkward, the animation just moves a bit fast and it's hard to be precise. Maybe when Yoshi's feet hit the floor after you drops from the goal ring. It has both an audio and visual cue associated with it.

Sounds like a great idea.
I found an easier way to set up the 1-6 skip.  I'll see if I can record it sometime today.  I'm more interested in pathing out the game, though haha

I figured I'd log in and post one more thing.  I just skipped having to take out the stems that pop up in front of the World 1 boss.  If you time it just right, you can shoot him before they go up.

I'll see if I can refine the technique to do consistently do that, and once again, I'll see if I can record it tonight.

SPOILER: Listen for the third root's audio cue.  As soon as you hear it end, jump and flutter.  Once he lowers the spikey root, shoot him.  Line up the shot horizontally/slightly upwards.

That's amazing tony! I had a feeling it was possible but never pulled off the shot.  Also in 6-3 I found the equivalent on the lava skip in YI SNES.  At the very beginning you can flutter from the first green platform all the way to the next and there isn't much room for error.  Also at the entrance of the third room you can flutter o skip a staircase.  This one is easier but if you mess up a single flutter you can still easily fall and have to backtrack to either the start or the second room

Just finished routing/learning world 4… 4-7 took hours… I'll make an IL to show my starts and I'll upload it here whenever I can.  Overall I feel like my world 4 starts were really solid.
Hello im new here did 1 run that was a 3:38:07, there's something to try to beat Smiley
But i only beat 6-8 once, and did no secret levels

nice flygon! We should probably make a leader board thread.  I feel like an optimized run would be around a 1:30:00-1:45:00 so your time is amazing for just a first run!
