A really groovy guy
I uploaded most everything today. Guess I'll post it here
A really groovy guy
Quote from Patashu:
If you skip the final boss fight how can that still count as beating the game?

Well by definition any% would mean to beat the game as quickly as possible under any circumstances.  Also any% in many games like OoT3D and even a certain TAS of SMW skip the final bosses and are still considered to be any%
i think time should be on last hit on baby bowser

Or rather, last hit on last boss. I'm assuming king bowser (best ending) is required for 100%?
yes casual
Aweomse videos koffing! These definitely help a ton.

In addition to the new lava skip in 6-3, you can also flutter over the gap right after you go through the door in 6-3 instead of having to shoot the cloud and make the bridge appear. It saves about 6 seconds. I'll see if I can get a video of it up soon.
i have all of the numbers of eggs needed for each level.

1-1: 0
1-2: 0
1-3: 0
1-4: 1 (Boss: 3)
1-5: 2
1-6: 1
1-7: 0
1-8: 6
2-1: 0
2-2: 2
2-3: 0
2-4: 0
2-5: 2
2-6: 0
2-7: 0
2-8: 4 (3 on Boss)
3-1: 0
3-2: 0
3-3: 1
3-4: 1 (3 on boss)
3-5: 0
3-6: 0
3-7: 1
3-8: 6 (3 on boss)
4-1: 0
4-2: Opt 1
4-3: 0
4-4: 1
4-5: 0
4-6: 0
4-7: 0
4-8: 0 (3 on Boss)
5-1: 0
5-2: 0
5-3: 0
5-4: 1 (3 on boss)
5-5: 0
5-6: 0
5-7: 2
5-8: 0 (13-15 on boss)
6-1: 1
6-2: 0
6-3: 7, could probably go lower
6-4: 5, 4 possible (3-6 on boss)
6-5: 0
6-6: 2
6-7: 1
6-8: 6, 5 possible (3 on boss)

if anything is inaccurate, let me know!
1-8 is inaccurate.  You only need 4.  One for the switch that's embedded into the platform after the blue blocks, and 3 for the boss.
you can do the main level with 0 eggs, but for the boss i can only do it with 6, so can you link vid of 3?

There is *supposedly* a possible quick kill if you hit him with an egg right before he puts his defensive vines up, I haven't been able to do it, though...
The quick kill is definitely possible. Just jump and flutter when you hear the last audio cue for the spiky vines and shoot as soon as he brings his vine down to expose himself. It isn't too hard to do.

For 6-3, I'm pretty sure no eggs are needed if you do the skip near the end. You can also flutter over the big lava enemy at the beginning (sorry, don't know the name) by jumping from the hill at the start of the level, so you don't need eggs to get past him.
Also, for people who were at bonesaw's stream today, you might've seen that he started time after he copied an already started file that had no levels completed instead of just starting a new game. What do you guys think about that? And did anyone see what his PB was? I had to leave in the middle of the stream so I wasn't able to see.
Going from a 0 completion save file is standard practice in other games that otherwise have a long boring intro to sit through (DKC Tropical Freeze, Pokemon TCG [GB], Super Metroid are good examples)
Well, Yoshis Island is timed from start of new game, so I think that's the way to do it. Your timing software of choice should be able to start the timer from a higher value if you choose to use a 0% savefile.

Also, I got the quick kill. Fluttering made it really easy.

http://www.twitch.tv/scykoh/c/3954218 Here's a highlight of a 1:49:01 run any% I did.

Commentary is full of my girlfriend and I being mushy, so apologies about that, but just thought some people might want to see a full run. Keep in mind that I'm fairly unpracticed with worlds 4, 5 and 6.

I started the timer on 1-1 entrance and end the timer on final hit of last boss.

Sub 1:40 will most likely be a thing at some point.
Thx for the info abt quick kill, and btw i start at file select, so we might aswell. Congrats Scykoh on 1:49:01!!!

Starting to grind things world by world to see what good times are and all that. Around 13:30 is a VERY good run for world 1, no mistakes larger than wasting frames here and there. 13:45 (maybe 13:40) and under is what I'd consider a "good" run for a full game RTA (the world 1 in my 1:49:01 world 1 was 13:51, which had mistakes in 1-1, 1-5 and 1-7) There's also around 2 seconds of RNG in 1-4, simply due to rotating spike balls being randomly in good or bad cycles.

The estimated "good" time is so close to the highly optimized "very good" time simply because World 1 is quite easy.

I should note that timing started on 1-1 level select, and ended on the fade out after the 1-8 boss.

I'll update with times of other worlds after grinding those.

Also currently working on single world runs. Not sure what my World 2 time is, but my World 3 time was 16:02 with few mistakes. I lost about 3 seconds on 3-5 and 6 or 7 seconds on 3-4. I'm sure there can be a lot more time saved throughout all of the levels with more optimization, though.

If we can get each world down to an average of about 15 minutes, a full optimized run will be really really quick.

I think I'm going to work on optimizing all of the world runs before I do my next full run.
Did i misplace my sexy? I think not
Glad people are already speedrunning this. I cant wait to see what this run will evolve into.

Did some world 2 grinding and right now (with current strats) I'd consider 15:00 flat to be a VERY good world 2 time. Anything sub 15:30 is pretty decent for an RTA (my 1:49:01 had around 15:25 or so)

There's a few things that could be improved, a better cycle in the cavern portion of 2-5, potentially hitting the 2-8 boss before he goes up to the ceiling (unsure if possible), general 2-7 improvements using eggs to break barriers to optimize movement. Also, the 2-4 boss is incredibly difficult to do in any sort of optimized manner. It's in large part RNG, although it can be manipulated somewhat via positioning as Kamek typically won't spawn near you. I'd say 2-4 boss has in the realm of 5-10 seconds of potential RNG.

EDIT: Improved 2-8 boss strats. Firstly, you can indeed hit him before he goes up on the ceiling the first time. Secondly, you can hit him IMMEDIATELY after he comes off the ceiling for the other hits. Finally, when on the ground doing his side to side attack, he chases you and go off screen -- I believe if you stand on the side of him closer to the edge of screen, it could save a small amount of travel time on the boss.

With the improved boss strategies, the estimates above should come down around 5-10 seconds.
With all those improvements mentioned and a good 2-4 boss, maybe somewhere in the 14:40 - 14:50 range could be achieved.
A really groovy guy
congrats on the wr scykoh! I'm glad someone beat my run ^O^ I'll take a stab at some attempts tonight
Hey guys, here's another any% run. This time I got a 1:45:14. There are still quite a lot of significant mistakes, as well as a slew of smaller mistakes and general lack of optimizations in a few stages, and most of worlds 4/5. Biggest and most frustrating mistake was missing THREE egg throws on the final boss, which cost ~20s each. This could have easily been a low 1:44. Anyways, still aiming for the goal of sub 1:40!

I just got a 1:43:49.  Had 2 deaths which were both in world 6.  A sub 1:40 will be my next goal.  Glad to see all this competition! #teamscykoh
Leaderboards updated. Going to do some runs today.

New PB of 1:58:37. Lots of deaths and mistakes obviously, but I cut the 2 hours which was my current goal! Yay!

Off the top of my head, I lost 30 seconds or so from a death in 2-6, and 5 minutes from 5-6 to 6-2 compared to my last PB, those levels really were not pretty at all. 6-3 lava skip took 4 tries I think. Also countless little mistakes throughout all of the levels which can be easily fixed with practice and optimization.

Do we have any strats for the World 5 boss? That really sucked for me in this run.
