Anyone interested in doing a Witcher Speed Run.

Here is a list of all the tricks I've learned:

Mandatory Quests

Though this game has a lot of quest, most can be avoided. The following are manditory:

Prolog: all

Chapter 1: 'Of Monsters and Men' and 'Salamander’s Tail'. Unsure if you can complete 'Salamander’s Tail' without doing 'The Secret Garden', 'Buried Memories', and 'Strangers in the night'.

Chapter 2: 'Prison Break', 'Vizima Confidential', 'A Mysterious Tower', 'The Sentry', 'Clay Pits', 'The Crown Witness', 'Autopsy', and 'Monoliths'.

Chapter 3: 'Posh Reception', 'Following the Thread', 'The Viziman Connection', 'Diplomacy and Hunting', 'Lock and Key', and 'The Unforgiven'.

Chapter 4: 'Ripples' and 'Free Elves'.

Chapter 5: 'Sweet Revenge', 'Her Highness the Striga', 'Hope That Burns' (neutral), 'Under a Fiery Sky' (Squirrels), and 'The Fire that Cleanses' (Order).

Epilogue: all

Quests Other

Chapter 1: 1 it's possible to forge a meteorite sword out of the 3 red and 2 blue meteorites in chapter 1 and the prologue. Though if you get the ore in the prolog you have to fight a Mutated Hound during the Buried Memories quest.

Chapter 1: I found it was easier to defeat the beast with the help of the villagers (I let them kill Abigail). Though Abigail will attack you in the Epilogue.

Chapter 2: If you don't team up with Siegfried you'll be given access to the hospital. If you do team up with him you'll gain access to the Dykes.

Chapter 4: the cow is a good shield against Dagon (Ripples quest).

Chapter 4: if you spare Berengar he'll fight Azar with you, if you killed him his Amulet will weaken Azar.

Chapters 2-4: 'Forced Recon' (chapter 2), 'Gold Rush' (chapter 3), and 'Free Elves' (chapter 4) all determine which faction will support you (Squirrels, Order, or neither). They will help you in chapters 3-5, and the Epilogue. If you don't support one of them they will both attack you.

Chapter 5: I have not tested whether you need to complete 'Her Highness the Striga' before you can get into the Old Manor.

Epilogue: the side you supported will help you, the other will attack you. If you're neutral (didn't support either) you can talk your way out of fighting them.

Epilogue: you don't need to fight the 'King of the Wild Hunt'.

Battle techniques

If an enemy is stunned (using Samum or Aard) Geralt can instantly kill them regardless of how much health they have left.

If Yred is used at a choke point the enemy will not be able to swarm Geralt. I also used it to kill the Golem without taking a single hit.

Cut scenes and dialog

Cut scenes can be skipped by pressing the escape ('esc') button.

Dialog can be skipped by clicking the left mouse button.

Limits

Geralt cannot enter another area if there are monsters nearby.
Thread title:
There are 4 problems:

1) Loading screens - The loading takes awfully long. It would be total speedrun killer if you put fraps to it. I can't even imagine how annoying it must be.

2) Lenght - even that you skip all the unnecesarry quests, the primary quests takes really really long.

3) Acts - Unfortunately you can't travel between all the areas like in Baldur's Gate, Fallout etc., so again the lenght would be a problem.

4) Bugs - The game is still not quite stable and there are also couple bugs, like the one in Act 3 with the inn fight right before end.

I'm sure you know all this, I'm just warning you. I wish you luck doing this, but this game is one of the worst for speedrunning I can think of. You could probably finish it under 10 hours.
You could probably edit loading screen and cut where the laoding bar doesn't move (if it has it)
Yes you could, but unless you're going for 1 segment per 1 loading, you would still have to wait for it. Or turn off/on fraps every time you enter/exit the loading, which would be imho annoying.

Never give up!
A run of this would be a massive undertaking just from a planning perspective, considering the first post of this topic and two specialized guides on GameFAQs comprises about the extent of actual knowledge I've seen people post on this game.

I put in a request for this game not too long ago, and considering that a run would pretty much HAVE to be segmented to preserve the sanity of the runner, I would want to see this done on Hard mode.  (Frankly, to achieve enough optimization to make going below 10 hours possible, I don't see any runner using anything less than triple-digit numbers of segments.)

Boosting Intelligence to the point where you can make oils via alchemy is probably going to be outright necessary.  I don't know about bombs yet, seeing as I've only gotten up to partway through Chapter 2 (and my only Silver Talent so far went to Intelligence).

I suggest going along with Siegfried, because when I did, I distinctly remember being able to bribe my way into the hospital very easily (I think what I paid is a little more than 20 orens, then another 10 to get past the guards to talk with the witness in the hospital).  I don't know if it works the other way, though.

I don't have much else to say right now, but may eventually.

For the sake of speed, do the run on the unpatched version of the game and abuse the unlimited talent point trick to boost everything to the max without having to power level.

The trick is really easy.

1: Gain a level so you get some talent points.
2: Meditate and distribute the talent points as usual.
3: Just as the meditation is over quickly bring up the hero screen (must be done before Geralt starts moving).
4: "Remove" all talent points you distributed before.
5: Note how you keep all the skills.
6: Meditate again and note how you now have all your talent points back without losing the skills.
7: Repeat.
8: Huh?
9: Profit.

This can ONLY be done on version 1.0.

100% runs=great to watch
That does sound like it would make for SOME nifty watching for an inaugural run of this game...albeit ultimately a separate category due to such a massive glitch abuse.  Would probably make more sense to play it on the easiest setting as well at that rate though.

If nothing else, it'd be an amusing appetizer of sorts until a time came for a non-uber glitched version to manifest in the SDA wilds.  No telling what'll go down with future patches either---would be hilarious if their frequency and severity was JUST ENOUGH to foster some kinda speedrunning dynasty around each version thinking it to be the last.

I also think that "A Game of Dice" might be a useful quest. Considering that getting orens from killing enemies, selling items etc isn't exactly yielding heaps of money. Once you reach the professional stage in dice you can easily get 500 orens in a single game, just remember to save before each dice game in case you lose. Heavy luck manipulation is needed.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
Would love to see a run of this. Of course it can be done, look at the 100% Obliv run.

Good idea Kibumbi. By doing this Geralt can max out his bronze skills. Though you'll need to gain a lot of levels to max out the silver skills (unless you drink a potion made with the hellhound's essence, which gives a silver talent). Though it isn't until act 5 that Geralt can the Koshchey heart, which will give him a gold talent.

Another trick with levels is to gain a lot of levels but to not level up. Since the experience you get from monsters is based on your character's current level you'll still get the full amount of experience.

Also Kibumbi the dice game does not need luck manipulation, just simple maths. The chances of getting a pair on your first role is pretty high, so if you get a pair keep it. Then reroll the other 3 dice, since you have a 50% chance of one of them matching your pair (giving you a 3 of a kind). This is normally enough to win.

Regarding potions Tawny Owl (regenerate endurance) and Swallow (regenerate health) are the most important ones to take. Most good oil's require a top quality grease / fat, which is hard to get until later in the game, so oils aren't that useful. Bombs are also a skill not available early on (I didn't use them much, since they are dropped not thrown).

In my opinion a speed run trying to complete Witcher as fast as possible should be attempted on the easiest setting, while any attempt to get 100% should be on the hardest setting with Geralt remaining neutral (if he doesn't support the Squirrels or the Order both attack him). Though I don't think giving Alvin to Shani or Triss makes Witcher any harder.

The betting is the key to get the "high roll" games, and you can't possibly know how the AI is going to bet unless they get full house or something. Just betting ++ all the time doesn't always do the trick. Winning with 2-0 is not an option either, you want 2-1 so the pot is as high as possible.
Edit history:
uanime5: 2008-02-17 02:40:56 am
Since the AI gamblers only have so much money you can't get too much from them (once you've cleaned them out they only bet a few gold). Though if you meditate for an hour or exit the area and re-enter they'll have all their money back.

Though I did read about a trick where you intentionally lose to the AI to give them more money to bet. Then wait for them to get a good roll, so they bet the full amount. Below is the trick in full.

Code:
I've found you can increase you money by 33% using this method against Munro Bruys... This doesn't seem like much but believe me, it builds up fast!
Note: Stay in the Hairy Inn for the duration of these poker games.

First, LOSE one third of your money to Munro Bruys (I bet the maximum, then forfeit by hitting "esc" and quitting the game at round 2 or 3). Make a new Save Game here.

Next, when you are at 2/3 or 66.7% of your starting money, bet only 10 orens per game and forfeit (using "esc" button and quit) until Munro Bruys gets a great hand (like a full house or 4 of a kind). Then bet really high (maximum). Munro Bruys will usually raise and bet the maximum both times. You'll probably lose this round (which is ok since you want to play 3 rounds). You'll need to win the other two rounds, then you take home the HUGE pot of orens. You can then leave the Hairy Bear Inn and return for mosre (or meditate for 1 hour or more).

For example. I walk in with 3,000 orens. I play (lose) until I have 2,000. Then I play again betting only 10. Munro Bruys get a pair so I quit. I play again for 10 orens and Munro Bruys gets 3 of a kind... so I quit. Finally I play again and Munro Bruys gets a full house. I'm at 1,970 and I bet the max. He raises, I raise him the max, He raises again and I raise the max again. I lose. Now I bet the max the next two rounds and (hopefully) I win. this means I take home 4,000 oren!!! I leave come back and repeat... 4,000 becomes 5,333 which becomes 7,111 which becomes 9,481 then 12,642 and 16,856... You see it adds up!

Note: Munro Bruys sometimes raises on 3 of a kind or 2 pairs if the dice are high like 5's or 6's (if you get sick of waiting for a full house). I haven't finished Chapter II so I don't know if there's a better poker player out there but this method set me up with nearly 70,000 orens before I stopped.
100% runs=great to watch
Giant patch coming with more content in May it seems.  80% load time reductions claimed...

Sometimes when you change areas Geralt's running speed is increased significantly. Should save some time.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I think that running with your sword drawn in fast style makes you run faster than default.
So when running about in the swamp or at night, be sure to do this.
Anyone still interested in this game? Huh?
I know I'm reviving "dead" thread, but it's better then making new one.

So hey guys, for some time wanted to speedrunning this Polish game (ech good to play in your home language) , but never had free time to actually work on it, but now I have and wanted to share what I've done so far.

For past 4 days, I've been routing and planing, and so far I have "completed" prologue, act 1 & 2 & 3, and started act 4. At first I though I would give up easlie, or it would take more time to complete acts with good plan, so didn't wanted to say anything, but seeing how well I'm doing, and the fact that I still want more, is good sign that this routing is going in good direction.
The only thing that was worrying me was the quest ammount and order. Though it will be hell to work the right order of doing them to not lose any time, but well, so far it looked good.

So now little about the game and routing:
Playing on newest version 1.4.5 on easy. I've reader about glitch in 1.0 but can't get hand on that version, and also I don't think if the version matter. uanime5 said some kind of trick with levels, when you gain level but not level up (probably talking about giving talent point, or in 1.0 there was some different system) but so far, I don't see any different in exp gain. I get the same ammount of exp from all enemies on different leves.
But so far I played without giving any points into the skill, and in act 3, I already have like 33 points ? so getting all bronze talent (the most important) is easlie done without other help.

Another reason, when fighting boss like the beast in act 1, you can kill it without any extra points of potions (Puting some skill while in cave with Abigail would probably help, but so far didn't do that). In fact, if you are super lucky, you can kill it in first 5 sec of the fight (Aard, and the kill it) but its very hard. At first though about getting better sword with runes or meteorite, but so far everything was dead after 2 combo hit. Only later in the game, when you are facing stronger enemy, Aard can help kill them in one hit, but other then that, everything is skipped or killed fast.

About the money or potions, I don't get any. The 5 or 6 starting potions from Kaer Morhen is enough, I only used 2 or 3 so far, and I didn't used or created any kind of potion. About the money, the ones from quest are enough to keep going. In act 1 you need only 45 orens to buy ingredients from merchant (Alvin potion) then in act 2 around 1000 orens to get to the tower. So far I didn't run out of gold, or was in some big need of them.

Next with the quest that will determine anything in the game: I have the Abigail guilty and killed, after the fight with the beast, quest say to go back for Shani, but you can leave her and run to the "city".
In act 2, when you need to do Autopsy, I try to make the Azar guilty, it save time over other 2 options. Because in other 2 you need to kill someone, and with Azar, you can skip the killing and move on.
In act 3 when you have to get ally to assault the enemy base, I first do quest for Zygfryd (it's closer then Elf quest. Also need to test what is faster, killing the elf, or helping the people traped), later in bank, go inside with Zygfryd, but inside help Elf (much less fight then staying with zygfryd).

Last thing with quest, been doing only important quest, needed to move the story. So far all of them are the same with the uanime5 list in first post. I was kinda suprised when saw only 2 quest in act 4. The guide I've from buying the game, says there are more quest, but it doesn't say which one are necessary to move on, so I will need to test that.

That's all for now (ofcourse I have much more deep notes, but I won't write it all now, maybe later when something will move), now I want to play act 3 again and check if I didn't missed anything, and then will work on act 4.
Any estimate for how long this run will be? I'm vaguely interested in exploring this game, but I'm not one for hours-long speedruns.
It is great game, and one of the reason why I wanted to speedrun it now (other then being Polish game), is beacuse soon there will be witcher 3, but if you want just to play this game, I really recommend. It will take some time to play it casually , but how long it will take to speedrun . . .can't say, its too earlie. I'm sure it will take less then 10 h (that someone mentioned earlier), maybe 3 h.

Can't say any specific time, but can say how long I THINK IT TOOK ME WHILE ROUTING - Prologue around 10 min, act I around 20 - 30 min, act II next 20 - 30 min, act III so far it looked the longest one, so lets say around 1h.
So it gives 2h, but don't take it too serious, I'm really not sure how long it will take.
Stalker!
i am hyped.
Found this guy who has done it, may help in your routing? http://www.twitch.tv/corpseflesh/c/3785633

That's gona help alot. At first wanted to write how I spend yesterday around 6h polishing Act 3 ( I changed the order of doing quest 3 or 4 times, so yeah BIG changes ) but for now I want to see what we do different.

there is a lot so if you want to check go ahead.

So far I see he put all point in to inteligent in Kaer Morhen to get talent which give more ingredients from enemy, and in Act I he take 2 side-job for oren and exp probably. Later on he put more points in other skill, so he have all style lvl 2 unlock.
Other then that, he also learn all scroll for potions (but so far he didn't made any) and he loot almost every enemy he kill (probably for side job, but why he loot human body ? he almost never take anything, is he looking for fistech so earlie on ? )

In Act II he doesn't help zygfryd kill monster in the sewer, he kill it alone (good idea, less cutscene with zygfryd) then he talk to Siemko about everything (guard - Sorry about polish name, thats the only I know, in english he probably have different name) then he go to Talar and then go to the hospital. Looks like he is also doing suspect quest earlier then I (was thinking about the same, but act 3 too long hehe) and then he challenge someone to drink ? (don't know why he do that, I would understand more if text was in english hehe ) and then doing unnecessary quest suspect Vincent. Later he make potion which will give him 1 silver talent, and buy some books, probably for autopsy quest which is unnecessary, you can do it whitout books. Maybe he did some suspect quest earlier, or he skipped some ? I really don't know, will have to try myself later. Other then that looks like he didn't planed order of most thing (he go sleep to meet Shani in her house, then sleep again to get the body deliver to the hospital AND again to do the autopsy, so 3 sleep instead of 2 in my case)

About Act III can't say too much, cuz I still looking for the best route, but so far I can say, he did save Talar, when I just leave him to dead, he did put device in to the statue earlier, just like I wanted, but only in cementary so far, and he do zygfryd quest earlier, but instead of leting Vetala leave and kill Elfs, he kill Vetala, which is faster. After this I changed route so many times, so I can't say which is faster or slower.

It did help me, but after looking at his run, I think I have still way to go.

EDIT:

Ech finally did it, I've finally routed Act III, so I hope I won't get any more stupid idea to change the route again . . . now finally to the Act IV

EDIT 2:

Ok, so finished the game today, there are still some route left to do, but now thanks to that run you gave Shaddex, I know how important are potions in late game , same with magic. With 3 potions and high level magic, you can kill everything with 3 or 4 cast. So now I will work on planning what ingredients to pick up or buy and where / when. Same goes with puting skill points, but that is rather easy.
I think I can say that I have finally ended routing. Today I finish mixing my route with potions making and with skills learning. I wasn't sure how much additional potions I need, but in fact it looks like I need to make only few.

I thought I will need like 3 from each potions ( Max mana up, magic damage up, magic regen ) but in fact, I think I only need 2 of each type. Other then thatn, I only make one potion from beast (extra 1 silver talent) and from golem heart (extra magic damage in night), I hope I didn't forget about any of them. Thanks to that, I can atlast prepare the list of ingredients I need to pick up earlier, so I won't have any problems later.

I will check the route last time tomorrow, and I will start running in saturday, probably afternoon (my time), can't wait to see how well it will go ^^.
Also, for now I will play with autosave ON, in today test, game crash right before final boss . . . I don't want this to happend during the run.

Why are you going for a single segmented run? The is even now rather unstable and there are still plenty of bugs.

Why dont you go for a segmented run? there you have way more options to optimize your route and dont depend on the stablity of the game.

Well first, I never did any segmented runs so i don't know how to start, and second this game is bugged, but not so much. The game doesn't crash like each 10-30 min or something, or in random places, if it crash, you know in when and at what place it will happend, so you can save and go on.

But I came here with other reason, I just finished my first run, and well it went really well. My time is 3:33:39, so it beats corpseflesh run by 25 min. I died twice, and game crash once in chapter V, and also I did many mistakes, and had bad luck, but thankfully my hard work on my own route paid off.

I want to do another run later today to improve it, so I will highlight the better one. Also I tried comment whole run (why I did that, or that) so people could understand my decision.

EDIT: Ok so I did another run, and my new best time is 3:26:58 game crashed twice this time (once in new place) and I also died few times, so still I can gain a lot of time. At least this time I did less mistakes. Again I did little comment (hope my voice isn't annoying)
