No, the OTHER Marvel!
It's true.  I have no shame.

This is more an exercise in curiosity than anything else.  The first time I ever played this, I beat it in about an hour and a half.  The second time it only took a little under 23 minutes.  For now, my goal is to get a time lower than the game's metacritic score (20%) and then go from there.

100% Personal Best Time:

11:40
15:33
18:05
22:32

Any% Personal Best Time:
3:16
7:07

NOTES:

-For timing purposes, it's better to play on an empty file every time.  Beating each level once unlocks new modes of play for it, which cause another menu to come up in between stages and take up a little more time.  On a related note, the game has no "delete" option, so to do so requires going through the Wii menu and clearing all the game data.

-There are only 4 levels total in the game, with one being a mandatory training stage.  The sticking point here is the sword training portion, as getting the sword to swing (horizontal swings with the Wiimote) is wildly inconsistent.  I've had the sword attack happen while trying to jump more often than when I actually try to attack things.

-Though the game never says it, jumping is also controlled with the Z button.  It's a hell of a lot more consistent than trying to thrust the nunchuk at the sky, especially when double jumping.

-The ranged attack is not only far safer than using the sword, but also functions as a good way to keep the camera behind Ninjabread Man without having to constantly reset its position.

-Tried to save time by attacking as few enemies as possible.  There were a couple times in level 1 and 3 where a projectile-shooting cake would knock me off a sequence of platforms, so I'm looking to see if there's a way to consistently dodge their shots instead of wasting time killing them.  Oh, did I mention?  All ranged attacks in the game are essentially heat-seeking missiles that don't stop coming after you until they hit something.

-The little "cutscenes" with the power source going into the teleporter can all be skipped.  Saves a massive amount of time.

-Land mines seem to be the biggest threat.  They damage you even if you're in mid-air and reach a good two bread-men beyond their blast radius.  Also, they have a knockback effect.  Will look into whether this can be used to propel Ninjabread Man through some areas.

-Sometimes entering the teleporter doesn't trigger the stage to end, and require walking through from both sides to work.

Any strategies or advice (that is, if anyone else is willing to admit they played this game) are welcome.  And no, "stop playing this game" doesn't count.

Stop playing this game. Done? Good. Now breathe. Next, fire up console and run it again! Finish game then repeat from step 1 until A Winner Is You! Smiley

Such an absolutely horrible game! Best $2 I spent on my Wii! Smiley

Good luck!

I got my copy for free as part of a "buy 2 get 1 free" deal.  The case has what look like a couple of slash marks through the plastic cover, so I guess whoever had it before didn't like it much either.

Anway, that didn't take long.  New personal best set earlier, which beats the 20-minute mark; 18 minutes and 5 seconds!  Silly me, I didn't realize that each little scene where you pick up a power source for the teleporter can be skipped.  I've been looking for boundary issues to try and get through some levels (namely the training stage) faster, but no such luck yet.  Now, let's see if we can get to or near the 17-minute mark!

Funny thing is how there are people who will read that and insist even at free, you got ripped off. Smiley They just don't know the silent charm of this title!

And holy crap... 18m and change? Dayum! Way faster then I ever ran it.. mind you, I got caught up on the completionist angle. Good luck on bringing it down even more!

Okay, wow.  Things just got... odd.

I was starting to record runs of this game when, after completing the first level, the game suddenly skipped a stage and went to the third level.  However, I still had to go back and complete the second level to get the full 100%, which I didn't realize could somehow be worked around.

Still, after having to go back through the main menu and complete the second level anyway, it then counted the third level as also being complete and gave me the 100%.  And even after the delay, this was still done in roughly 15 minutes and 33 seconds!  I'm going to see if I can get that level skip thing to happen again, because if so... well, an Any% run of this game could be really, really fast.

Here's the video I took of one of my (admittedly very shoddy) runs.

At 5:34 I hit the teleporter at the end of the first level.  Then the loading screen appears followed by the "intro" to the second level.  Then it bypasses that level entirely and sends me straight to the third and final level.  At 11:41 I hit the teleporter for the final stage and, when it goes back to the title screen, it shows my profile as being 75% complete (11:57).

The stage select screen says that I was on stage 2 with stage 3 unavailable, but after beating stage 2 (15:42) and going back to the main menu (16:12), my profile says it's 100% complete.  Did I accidentally find a way to any% this game?  All I was doing was hitting A to get into the second level as fast as possible.

Okay, so... I THOUGHT this was possible, but I haven't found a less-complicated way to pull it off (yet).  A major time-saver would be skipping over the training sections entirely as they have you run through three areas to collect diplomas for doing busy work, and I found a way to do that.  However, it requires some incredibly precise jumping to get on top of the wall and then run around almost a quarter of the level environment.

Illustrated in the video below, I jump onto one of the lower bits of candy near area 3 of the training stage, then use that to boost myself onto the lollipop before jumping on to the... whatever that is.  Then I jump onto the wall, trying to land somewhere in the pink area closest to the top of the wall.  Too far up the wall and I fall through the environment, too far below the pink line and I just fall back into the level.  I then double jump my way across the wall, except for running across the top of the domed barrier around area 3, all the way to the exit gate.  Just before the barrier the wall abruptly slopes up, making the final jump much tougher than the others to this point.  I then land on top of the barrier to the exit and walk out of the level, and the game thinks I've completed the training section.

(Note: the successful attempt starts at 0:48)

UPDATE: I think I figured out the level skip glitch!  I've only gotten it to work from level 1 to level 3, but here's what I did.  For some reason you can still activate the cursor that shows up when you try to use the throwing weapon as the end of the stage teleporter scene is going on.  If you leave the cursor on and off screen when the menu pops up to go to the next stage, you have to hit A twice; once to get rid of the cursor, and once to hit the next level option.  However, having the cursor off screen keeps the next level option highlighted for both hits.  Somehow the game reads this as hitting next level twice, bypassing the second stage and going right to the last level!

I knew this game could be broken down... I KNEW it wasn't the best game, let alone the best coded game... but Damn! It's either the testers hated this game so much they never bothered testing this.. or they legitimately never thought of this as possible!!

Very well done! Definitely better then any luck I've had breaking this down!

*Jaw drops*

Wow... never would have expected sub 10... absolutely insane!

It turns out I'm kind of an idiot.  Two things I never considered while doing these runs until now:

1. If I do the level skip after level 2, technically I lose control of my character as soon as the level skip is initiated as it just does a couple loading screens before kicking back to the main menu, and
2. Level 2 is actually a bit shorter than level 3, even with a couple screw-ups.  Level 2 is like my own personal GT500 from Gone in 60 Seconds; no matter how many times I run it, something always goes wrong.

I just timed out a kind-of shoddy run done with this method and it could easily be sub-7 minutes, possibly under 6.  I'll have to look into this more and do the one thing I was hoping to avoid; playing level 2. Sad

I... I did it.  I completely broke the game.

I'm still not sure how this happened, but at one point the cursor for the menu and parts of the interface started disappearing.  Then... this:

I was concentering on picking this game up.

I really love 3D platformers, and they seem to be a dying breed.

So who knows, you might have some competition in this game!

I wouldn't call speedrunning this a labor of love so much as me pretending I'm Ivan Drago and the game is Rocky Balboa ("I must break you.") but good luck!

In the mean time I've been experimenting with damage boosting, especially through the final parts of stage three and near the beginning of stage two.  Also the level skip is proving wildly inconsistent to do from stage two to the end but it is still possible.

So... about that level skip glitch.

It turns out I can get that to work from more than just level one or two.  I got it to work after the training stage purely by accident to skip to level two, then got it to work again after level two to skip to the end of the game.  In other words, a 50% run of this game is possible, though the skip is still a bit finicky about working consistently.

Also, thanks to barinelg for the tip on how to double jump after bouncing on the lava.  It comes in handy for routing on levels two and three.

And now for a video demonstration:

Approximately 4:13 from the moment the Training Doughjo is selected until the third level gets skipped.  It's also worth noting that it's possible (though tricky) to run along the top of the wall around the training stage for a bit, which is faster than jumping the whole way.  Also the level skip can be triggered without using the crosshair trick, so long as A is hit twice after the menu comes up but before it proceeds to the loading screen.

This still needs work since, with the previous path I took, I never played level 2 and need to practice it more.  However, it looks as though this can potentially be a much, much faster run if the level skip works after the training level and level 2.

Come to think of it, how would timing the run work if the level skip does work after level 2?

Minor update: by timing runs from gaining control to when the level skip is initiated after finishing level 2, my approximate best time is 3:16.  I feel like it's possible to get that down to around 3:13, 3:12.  3:10 might just be the perfect run.

Also, in an effort to derive some additional challenge from playing the game, I've started doing one-handed runs.  It's as uncomfortable as it sounds.
im planning on speed runing it
