Since this game annoys me enough, I've decided to punish myself over nothing by speedrunning it so I can still be in frustration hell.

I'm predicting that sub 5 hours will be possible (sub 3 with newgame+--which I know is possible since I just completed newgame+ with quite a bit of mistakes with Rue at 3:22 before going into Klaus's house the final time.)
Thread title:
Yes, a ninja riding a tiger.
I enjoyed this game when it first hit.  Enough to play once all the way through, anyways.  But since it's been so long, I don't have any tips to share.
Under 5 sounds decent enough.
Good luck!
...
Thanks for the luck. With how this game is, I'm going to need it.
This game always seemed interesting. Good luck! Wink
We all scream for Eyes Cream
I've always wanted to play it but never got the chance as I never saw it in stores. All I played was the demo. Seeing a speed run would make me glad.
...
Just finished one of the most annoying parts of the game: playing the games with whatever-they-are-called at Fancy Mel's place. Also finished off Duke, saved with a time of 00:43.

Sorry for the bump and double post. Did finish this a few days ago, but I'm not satisfied with it, even with the time of 3:19:13 before entering Klaus's house for the final time during the interactive ending. Thus, I'm not submitting this to SDA. However, I did go ahead and encode the run and uploaded it if anyone's interested in seeing a run on this game (just note that this is Rue's storyline, not Mint's.) The segments are listed below (if you're hating the slow speeds of megavideo, I've also uploaded the avi's which can be downloaded [link=http://hosted.filefront.com/dsmattj/2085711]here[/link]).

...Wha?
Deadsticks...ran Threads of Fate?

Welp, another "record" and run to put to shame.
Flarerdb got around 3:30 single segment last night. His timing started after selecting Rue and ended when it displayed "End of Rue's Story." This is based on JRTA timing. I left about halfway through, and he had about 12 deaths up to that point (his chat was keeping a death counter).

Considering the deaths, the mess ups and everything, this time can definitely be improved. The WR based on the Nico wiki is around a 2:50 by Ken (same guy that runs Mega Man X2). Looking forward to seeing this progress.

We also have a written-up route on google docs, but it's still in the works. If anyone is ever interested, I'll be happy to post it for people to see.
...Wha?
Oh boy, Flare is on the ball. I never finished drafting my route yesterday, so I'll have to finish it off today. Should be good to go on a practice run attempt soon.

I'll be purchasing the game some time next month. If you're reading this Flare, keep it up man.

I have gotten 3:29 single segment with Rue's story so far. My Mint is not nearly as good but I am routing it out currently.
I am working with Flare on it, but I have to get a lot more work done before I can focus on the game as much.
The current Nico WR is down to like 2:50 which means that the English version can be finished in around 3:02 or so completely optimized.. Ken is really good, but I don't know how to watch it.
My goal was to get my run down to under 4 hours before the Seamergency marathon.

My twitch is glocktary, and if anyone is interested in working on my route with me besides Flare, I am happy to figure things out cooperatively.

Edit: I mean New Game only. I don't run NG+, I think it's too easy when you can one shot most bosses.
Edit 2: I had KEN's times wrong. Both stories are 2:50:xx

I have knocked my Mint run down to 3:29 as well in time for the marathon tomorrow night.

I had access to doicm and flare's rue route, but not the Mint so I ended up writing my own on a spreadsheet.
I'll actually post my runs once I get them closer to 3 hours.

Rue's Story now cut down to 3:18:28(JRTA)

I can beat it soon, I did a bunch of silly things during the run for the marathon incentives.

Apparently the PS2 slim reads the disc faster and allows you to cut a lot of time off from the loading while you do the run. I may be trying to acquire one. KEN uses a ps2 slim for the faster reading speeds. Considering the length of the run, the disc reading difference could cut down full minutes from the run immediately. I will be working on both runs off and on to try and get them under 3:05.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
What system have you been playing it on? The version of the system as well as the format in which you are playing it (Disc vs PSN version) can greatly effect the load times.
...Wha?
PS2 Fast Disc Load option is godly. I fully suggest using it if Threads of Fate runs into no loading issues...like a particular game I know of.

10+ minutes shaved off just from Fast Disc Load being on. Game fails to load at the last leg of the game. Any way, glad to know someone's running this. I'm right behind you once I'm satisfied with my time in Brave Fencer Musashi.

But is it faster or slower than PSN version or playing the disc on PS3?

Some games are actually slower on PS2 with fast disc speed than playing on PS1. And some games are faster to run on their PS3 PSN version rather than PS2 slim. Also the various different models of the PS2 slim (and which emulator they are using to emulator ps1 games) can greatly effect the loading.

Also in general, it is normally faster to play the disc on a PS3 than it is a PS2 slim because the PS3 will greatly reduce any in game lag that might occur when there is too much going on the screen.
...Wha?
I've no idea honestly, though I use the original fat PS2. Hopefully PSN version isn't slow though, as that's about the only version I'll be able to play.

I have mostly just been playing it on normal speed ps2. I was informed that the PS2 Slim has an even faster load than the Fat PS2 load.

I am considering getting it on PSN and trying a few runs to see if the PSN transitions much faster. Like I do actually care about using consoles to play the game which is why I would never emulate it, but it is a longer run. I would definitely buy a fifth copy of the game on PSN if it meant my run would be minutes shorter and less loading overall.

Edit:
I'll be buying the PSN version in the next couple of weeks if I am lucky. I want to optimize the run, because despite cutting down on my time a whole lot, I was pretty nervous and I made some really bizarre mistakes on a few occasions. One of which I have just never done before and did it repeatedly in the ghost temple. If you want to watch me run this every day or two, my twitch is here: http://www.twitch.tv/glocktary

Every PS3 console can play PS1 games. So you might also try playing the game on a PS3 since it sounds like you have one.

Here you go Orctary. A lot of it is mostly copy-pasta from Flare's route. But I went into more detail with boss strats.

I did a run on the PSN version. The loading speeds do not seem to make a huge difference if any at all. While disappointing, I can't actually say whether or not it helps or hurts as of yet. I made some really huge mistakes both early on and at the end and it cost me at least 10 minutes by themselves, not including the other mistakes.

I did however realize that in ghost temple when you have to fight enemies behind doors with Elena at the beginning of her escort you can attack the skeletons (and maybe the puppets) behind the door before they are visible, allowing you to do damage to them before they are visible.

I'll be working very hard on these runs after Seamergency is over. I was going to do another run but I have an art shift in a half an hour. Once I beat my PB again I'll work on Mint.

Edit:
The time between defeating Valen 2 and the end of JRTA timing is around 18 minutes exactly. Which means if I can't beat Valen 2 before 3 hours hits, I'll just be ending my runs. My real goal is to beat valen 2 by 2:47 currently.

New time: 3:10:01

I apologize for the slight drop in quality, and some dropped frames during the run. The current temperature of my area is over 50 degrees Celsius, as I state in the description of the video. It has gotten up to 125F for those that are less C.

While I am happy with this time, I am going to keep knocking it down more. I have put a schedule on my twitch and I will run the game at least one time every day except for Fridays. I will be working on Mint until I get her run Anywhere at the 3:10:xx level.

Major Mistakes:
1. On the way to Nightmare, using Tiger I killed two enemies to get past them faster. While this may have saved a couple of seconds in the immediate moment, it bumped Tiger off too early from my route.
2. Hilariously bad platforming in the Underground Ruins.
3. The Hexagon fight at raging mountain went extremely poorly. Wylaf was not as perfect as the last run.
4. The Gorotan fight went poorly (twice) but I barely won the second go.
5. I died against Chimera in the boss rush due to low HP at the time. If I died on purpose I would have wasted less time.

Minor Mistakes:
1. I got caught on some stairs once.
2. I made one mistake platforming on one of the poppul games.
3. I missed the first hit on Starlight Duke with Fungie.
4. I keep being bad at platforming at the end part of Arena 1.
5. My Doll Master fight was weak. I got it near perfect last run.
6. I didn't have enough money to buy an upgrade so I had to return to Hobb's to sell a couple of bronze coins.

Improvements:
1. Defeating enemies behind walls in Ghost Temple saves a couple of seconds.
2. Leading off with movement before areas load to save seconds.
3. Jumping right before platforms in Mel's Altier instantly clips you onto the platform. Doesn't save more than half a second but it is a cute trick in my opinion.
4. Using the quick jab more often as suggested by sh0rtCircuit trivializes at a couple of bosses.
5. I got an extremely good Valen 1, and a 4 Hit Valen 2. Those fights being so good will kill future runs because they were very quickly executed.

If I can avoid some of the mistakes I made, do fairly similar to this run, and do well on the final gauntlet I can beat this again but for the time being I will be working on Mint.

Big thank yous to the people helping me route and giving me ideas to improve it.

EDIT: Added a mistake I forgot.
Queen of Sharks
I got a 3:15:25 time with Mint now. While I think it is an okay time, I did so many bad things in it I am very much displeased with the run itself. Assuming I can improve it this week I'll talk more once I get Mint near Rue's time.
...Wha?
Goodluck man. Grats on the new time, at least you're making improvements and that's always a good thing.
