Nope, it's not Commander Keen, should have mentioned that actually as it was the first game I thought of as well. It's platforming only, nothing in the way of cutscenes, storyline etc.

It's predominantly a graveyard-style theme, the enemies are zombies, skeletons etc IIRC and they don't change much throughout the game.
@bnm

sounds like Monster Bash to me
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
They all mix together and it's been many years, but I really thought Keen matched all of those.

There's some underground stuff, like some Keen 4 levels take place entirely underground. Also I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I remember a slingshot for some reason, I think in Keen Dreams maybe? (and I would say that even if nobody had said the word slingshot in this thread) I think when you kill some guys, they die with a cartoon gravestone too.

But hey, since b-man since it's not Commander Keen, it definitely isn't. Smiley Let's stick with Apogee and try Monster Bash. Edit: lol, I just had to scroll down a couple lines, reg already said it.

It was Gene Wars(1996)!

Heh, Type II error. I remember filtering this out at the last minute because of the HUD description. Really cool you found it though.
That's it right there. Much luv, reg, Enhasa.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I recall a game I played on my grandfather's MaxPlay (NES clone), it was a plane top down shooter without very detailed graphics, the levels seemed infinite, but maybe its just because we used to die without getting to the end.

The levels started with your ship leaving the base then you entered the level, there were powerups from time to time that had a letter changing, each letter giving a different effect. The ones I recall are H (I guess Hammer) that gave your ship some black spheres circling around it and made your shots a pair of these "iron" balls. Then M (I guess Multi) that made your shots a pair of squares, and starting firing forward, drew a circle around you (being able to hit behind you), each of the squares drawing the semicircle corresponding to their side. I also recall a third weapon which I don't remember its letter, but it was a fast wave/slash, a semicircle projected from your ship that traveled forwards. At the end of each level there was a boss fight, the bosses had different shapes but looked the same, each had stuff protecting their cores, and moved around the screen.
berserker status
I'm guessing either Twin Eagle or Tiger Heli, although i doubt either of those are the title you're looking for.

edit: i see Enhasa is a fan of del.  I prefer Dr. Octagon but deltron 3030 is a classic (both produced by dan the automator).

I will guess B-Wings

based on exhibit 1 and exhibit 2
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
It's definitely B-Wings, no guessing necessary. This was another case where the NES port was a lot more playable than the original arcade version.

RiskBreaker: Hey yeah, nice avatar. I like Kool Keith somewhat too, but it was all downhill from Dr. Octagonecologyst. My fav Automator stuff is Deltron, Handsome Boy Modeling School (with Prince Paul), and Bombay the Hard Way (with DJ Shadow). You're right, Del is probably my fav MC though.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
yes! awesome, I went through sites that listed nes shooters but missed that one I guess, Dyna is that wave powerup
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Yeah, everyone used Hammer though because it was easily the most awesome and also the best.

I went back through this thread and updated it. The number of games almost doubled since last update. (Huge thanks to Essentia of course for being the original maintainer!)

I guess I'm taking care of it for now, but if you would enjoy taking it over, let me know. Then again it might not be that hard to maintain, we'll see.

Let's try to answer some of the unsolved games!
I remember when I was young, I played this game. It was a Raiden type game sorta on PC, and I think it was probably a DOS game. I'm pretty sure you could only move left and right, and I seem to recall in order to get the powerups, you had to deploy some sort of hook thing from your ship. I don't think the stage moved, it was just "kill everything and move onto the next stage". I remember a boss shaped like a hexagon I think that I could never beat.

Reading that made me flash back to something I used to play which had a ship with a long hook/claw to grab the powerups. If we're thinking on the same game it was definitely a DOS game. The game area consisted of 2/3's of the screen vertically and the last 1/3 on the right side had things like score, lives, bombs firepower etc. I seem to recall the firepower being represented with a vertical bar which you would eventually fill up with enough powerups.

The ship was indeed standstill at the bottom of the screen with only left and right movement possible. The hook slowly extended straight up from your ship and you had to position your ship and time your hook triggering so that the tip of the hook would hit the powerup. If you missed you'd have one more chance to catch it when the hook started detracting. Usually you only had the time for one attempt at each powerup.

Unfortunately, I can't recall the name of the game. Will look for a DOS shooter list to browse through and see if something rings any bells.

edit: Found it! It was Galactix, by Cygnus Software (screenshot)
Man, the screenshot looks way different than I remember. It is probably it, I just have a different image in my mind. Maybe I'll play it for a bit and see if it seems right Tongue

Alright, so this is a little different, but I didn't want to make a new thread about it. (or maybe I should?) I know the name of a game, but I can find absolutely 0 information about it beyond that.

The game: Harrint for the Genesis.

Any information on what kind of game this is would be helpful to me. Of course, even if I knew what this game was, I'd probably be hard pressed to find it. I'm actually starting to think maybe it doesn't exist at all, and was made up somewhere.

I had this game when I was little! It was amazing. Well, scratch had, I still have the original floppy disk for this game, along with Clyde's Adventure and Shooting Gallery.

You are probably either remembering the spoken name and not the actual spelling correctly, or the game title is in a obscure localized language.
Even scrambling or interchanging the letters based on pronounciation didn't bring up any similarities in the genesis list, or any other list of games for consoles from that era for that matter.

The closest I can get based on that name is 'Space Harrier' and 'Hatris', and that is still very far off and thus not likely candidates.

It's not something I've heard spoken before. I've never been very big on Genesis games, so when making my list I went off the list from my local game store. I figured since it's marked as having a price it should exist. I think now though, that it was just made up or something, and everyone must have used the same list to get this fake game stuck in their databases. Here's a list of places that have the game by title only with no additional information

I had a game on my mobile once. Don't know the name. Must have been a clone of something i guess. But whats the name of the original game?

It's a puzzle game on a field about 15x15 size per level. There must have been 80 of them. So you start on a field of the level and see the exit, a monster and some obstacles per level. Now you move a field up/down/left/right, then the monster moves one field towards you. The monsters either moved up/down first or another type of monster left/right if they had a choice how to aproach you. You die if the monster gets on your field and you win the level if you reach the exit. The obstacles were either blocks/barriers which you you could use to trap them or holes where they could fall into. Every now and then there was a supermonster that moved 2 fields towards you per move move make and went over holes. Levels increased in difficulty, so basically the routes you have to take to dodge the monster/s and get to the exit became longer.

There are a lot of games of this type. Do you mean like Theseus and the Minotaur?

I've got 723 genesis roms, and the closest I saw was Herzog Zwei.  You play as a robot that changes into a fighter jet, and it's a top down game.  I just played it but that's all I remember.

Here's some info on it: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/genesis/data/473001.html  I somehow doubt that's the game you're looking for.

You know what, never mind.  It was probably just a prank somebody pulled to make people waste their time.  Little to do they know how worthless my time is.

I really doubt it would be Herzog Zwei, or else he would remember it. Herzog Zwei is famous now for being the first RTS ever made. True story.

Finding out the first RTS was a console game is like finding out the creators of techno were black.
