The gog.com package came with two versions: Classic and Enhanced. Classic is just a vanilla dosbox port that doesn't run very well while Enhanced has native mouselook, custom keybinds, and resolution upscales.
There's lots of minor changes (most important of which are dialogue stuff popping up way more often, slightly changed drops, and strafe is now much faster), but there's also one gigantic change that means the route has to be completely rewritten.
From a new game file from game boot, the reactor destruct code isn't random.
This is incredibly important because it now means that I don't have to ever visit Flight Deck, I can skip lots of areas on floors 2-5, and the code no longer has to be written down. All of this put together adds up to over 90 seconds of possible time to save and a much safer run for marathons.
This isn't even factoring in the couple of seconds here and there that mouselook will save for travel. I still haven't timed out those differences.
That's brilliant... I feel that mouselook will save a huge amount of time as well, because movement was one of the most awkward things to handle in the original game.
Awesome. Sub-10 is a bit of an arbitrary measurement, but it would be fun to be able to say "beat the game in under 10 minutes"
If you do get sub-10, you should definitely send it to Otherside Entertainment. They have some of the original team from SS1 (when they were at Origin) now working on System Shock 3 and might send the speedrun out in a newsletter of some sort. Their new "Underworld Ascendant" game is meant to be all about thinking outside the box to find alternative interesting solutions.

You don't need to think outside the box when you save bump outside of the box
