60 Different not to mention break the targets or board the platforms

How do you figure 60? @_@;

There'll just be 12 runs, depending if a couple are death abuse or not, so maybe a little more than that.

And there's already Break the Target and Board the Platform records out there, but they're emulated.

60 POSSIBLE however there is the death abuse thing so more like 65 if i get my n64 going and they're still selling tapes at the dollar store i may do some of em

you think radix would host these? i mean it's 60 5-10 minute runs
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!

Probably not all 60. I'm guessing he would count the skill levels seperately, while negating the character variables.
If anybody is interested, I made a TAS of this game on Very Hard difficulty. The time was a little under 7 minutes and its not perfect because for one I didn't have an analog stick, but it's still pretty entertaining sometimes. If anybody cares, here is the .m64 file:
http://rapidshare.de/files/8149252/Super_Smash_Brothers_very_hard.m64.html

Anyway, the main reason I posted this was so that you guys could help me, telling me what times can be improved and/or what strategies were suboptimal. I have relatively no knowledge of this game, so it was really just a test, but anyway, help would be appreciated. Who knows, maybe by some random luck I discovered something you guys havent thought of yet? I doubt it, but its always a possibility. Anyway, there it is, please dont let this start a tas flamewar, I just did this as a test of the emulator's capabilities, and wanted the input of some people that know this game well.

Thanks, and happy speedrunning!

Ah, so that's how you figure 60..... Are you all fucking mad? Grin

I'm just going to stick with my DK death abuse run, and you people can do whatever you damn well please :P...... In fact, speaking of my run, I hope to have it recorded in the next few days (if I can find a spare blank VHS tape. For real this time).

After my run is finished, I'm working on a project with the rest of the SSB Team. I've mentioned it a couple times before, that we're going to do each individual stage with a possible different character and see what kind of times we can garner. It won't go up anywhere or anything, it's just something we're doing for fun.

As for the TAS, that's cool. Probably will start a flamewar regardless anyways.

I'll get the members of the team to come in and post as guests whenever we have a new time up or anything. Will keep you people posted Wink

nah i think members don't have anything against tas as long as they don't say it's better than speed running cause it's not  Wink
XXY
Eh, good point. Anyways, I haven't been able to find any blank VHS tapes (you have no clue how many I went through), so my run is looking kind of bleek.... I'll keep on searching though. I'd ask my dad for the hundredth time where the blanks are, but he's on vacation with my mom in Banff, now in a more potent spot to ignore me.

Anyways, the rest of the SSB Team is hyped up for this grand world record run of ours (that of course won't be going on tape, which is seriously the dumbest fucking thing on the planet), so we've started before my run is finished. Whatever. No idea why I've decided to state all this.

So anyways, we've started our little project here. We'll be choosing the best characters for select stages, and possibly the best difficulty too (for manipulation reasons). For instance, I can land 7 seconds on Very Easy for Fox. On Very Hard, Kipps can land around 5-6 seconds with Kirby..... You see where I'm getting at? So that's what we're doing, stage by stage in order, maybe discussing techniques for individual stages down the road, all that jazz. So anyways, here's how our stuff will be structured:

Character:
Stage:
Difficulty:
Time:
Description:

I've already gotten the project rolling with a time for Link:

Character: Donkey Kong
Stage: Link
Difficulty: Very Easy
Time: 3 seconds
Description: For my speedrun, I'm using the easy 5 second method of getting Link off the stage. However for this time, we developed a much harder method for throwing Link off the edge that you very rarely hit. I however hit it on the 30th try. After Link is off the edge, he gets smashed, then smashed again to death. I lose a life, but it was worth it.

Now it's on to the Yoshi Team. Who do you people think the best character for the Yoshi Team is? Quinn is going to give it a try with Captain Falcon, and we'll see how that goes. Just incase you're wondering, here's the members of my team:

Triskit Batalla (me!)
Quinn Zitlau
Kipps Slydesky
Ben Kessler

I don't have a cool way to wrap this up so, you'll just have to live with the sub-par ending I suppose @_@;
Wow, under 7 minutes on Very Hard? That's going to be tough to beat, but thanks for the video guideline, Jammer01! You know, my theory on TAS runs is that they serve as guidelines for official speedruns. So I have no complaints here.

As for your project, poCari, I think any character with an attack that can get rid of multiple guys at once would be best against the Yoshi Team, like Samus and her Screw Attack or Mario and his Tornado, or heck, DK works well too with his Spinning Kong move. Good luck with that project.

Alright, I have a sort of a bar line time for the Yoshi Team:

Character: Donkey Kong
Stage: Yoshi Team
Difficulty: Very Easy
Time: 17 seconds
Description: On rare cases, Yoshis will jump and fall exactly how you want them to. I hit the right Yoshi off the stage first, then as soon as I jump up, I helicopter the left Yoshi that jumps up, then I just have enough helicopter to hit the Yoshi that falls down. Then I stand on the middle platform and throw Yoshi's left and right. At the last couple seconds, I jumped up and helicoptered, so the Yoshis would simply die as soon as they spawned.

So we have a bar line time to beat. C'mon Quinn and Ben, where is C.Falcon and Mario? Wink
One more question. I just downloaded that .m64 file Jammer01 put up for his emulated Very Hard run, but I can't find an emulator that plays movies. I tried 1964 and I tried Project 64, but it seems like neither one supports movie recording or playback. Any thoughts?
Sleeping Terror
Yeah. Read their forums. Specifically, the section about N64 emulators.
yes, you have to use the version of Mupen64 that nitsuja made, you can find it here:

http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2934

I gave you a link to the thread that contains it (links to emu on first post) because in that post it contains a lot of tips for fixing problems that people usually have (It wasn't made that long ago), so make sure you read through that first post. I also posted that link so you could choose different mirrors just in case one of them are broken for some reason.

Anyway, any feedback would be appreciated. Obviously, this video would *never* be compared to a legit run, I mean, seriously, its just entertainment, so don't get me wrong. I hope your computer is fast enough to run it, because you really don't get the full effect if your computer wont run full speed.

I've listed the times for each level just for the hell of it:
Link: 5 seconds
Yoshi Team: 16 seconds
Fox: 12 seconds (I'm sure this can be improved)
BTT: 2 seconds (skipped of course)
Mario Bros.: 13 seconds
Pikachu: 6 seconds
Giant DK: 7 seconds
BTP: 13 seconds ("skipped")
Kirby team: 17 seconds
Samus: 16 seconds
Metal Mario: 3 seconds
RTTF: 23 seconds
Polygon team: 38 seconds
Master Hand: 35 seconds

Anyway hope you enjoy the movie!
A-T
I've come to contribute to the project with the possible final time for Yoshi Team:

Character: Captain Falcon
Stage: Yoshi Team
Difficulty: Very Easy
Time: 12 seconds
Description: I abuse Up+A and Up+B. I essentially stay in the air as long as I can, and as soon as Yoshi spawns, I Up+A him straight to his death. It's a fast strategy that hardly ever works, but it worked this time around, which I'm glad for. I could go to 11 seconds if I pushed myself, but I doubt it. Jayden already said he's going to do 10 seconds or so with JigglyPuff, so there's really no point.

Next up is Fox. Don't know what we're going to do with him.....

Jesus christ, 12 seconds? And I'm assuming since you're mentioning Jayden, he's on the team now. Well, if he can spit out 10 seconds or lower with JigglyPuff, I'll be speechless..... What's his strategy anyways?

As for Fox, Kipps said he had a strategy for Very Hard mode. Running to the left side, sucking up Fox and spitting him out under the ship there. But as soon as he does that, Up+B him so he goes straight down. Or catching him at the very edge and doing R+R for an instant KO. I dunno, we'll see what he does I guess.

And just towards everyone else, I haven't been able to locate any blank VHS tapes, and my brother doesn't know where some are in this god forsaken house of mine. This is bad for my SSB run, and my Halo runs now that I mention it.... I'm itching to record my 6:18 run of Guilty Spark Tongue

Anyways, that's ending the off topicness. Quinn, get Jayden to post here with his stuff <_<;
That's the same strategy I use for my Very Hard run. I've gotten around 10 seconds consistently with it, but I think it's possible to go lower than that depending on how fast you can get Fox over to the edge.
XXY
Jayden says he can pull off 5 seconds if Fox just runs straight off the edge. He'll just R+R him right to his death if everything is perfect.
Yes, that's my strategy. It rarely works, but I got a potent 6 second run with it before on Very Hard. 5 seconds is just a matter of luck. For Break the Targets, just do Fox, as he dies in 1 second. As for the Mario Bros., I suspect you have a strategy with DK, Triskit.
theres a ssb run on tas if you guys wanna see. its with yoshi.  maybe someone could use it as a guide?

its focus isnt speed though... but still
Next run officially planned. Currently practicing.

Wth Fox, you could use Up+A and Down+B. The Reflector (Down+B) move takes them out in one hit from what I recall...
Hello everyone. I am really new to speed running, but I'd really like to submit a run for Super Smash Brothers 64 in the very hard mode no deaths category.

I am using a Diamond USB capture card right now. I've been working on my run for about two weeks now and I've been breaking an insane amount of ground in the last two days. I have a 10:27 run with no deaths and a 9:32 with one death, but even that I know I will be able to improve on soon. I think within a week or so I will be able to get a run in the neighborhood of 8:30 if I get every single quick kill strat on the first try and a really good polygon and master hand fight. I'm getting more consistent each day.

I could even record a webcam feed or a live commentary for verification purposes. I don't know how this works but I am very proud of this run and excited about what I can grind it down to, so I'd like to get the ball rolling. The TAS record for Kirby is 5:51 but 7 - 8 minutes is the neighborhood of most TASes. I'm thinking with enough luck and persistence I can get a real speed run that rivals some of the TAS times out there.

Here are my runs so far:
12:51 -
12:35 -
11:27 -
10:27 -
9:32 (with death) -

The last two feature me trying out some new quick kills that I got from a Japanese TAS video. Once I get them consistent it will be no turning back. Sub 10 runs from here on out.
Hey y'all. I found a twitch video by the user Pikashy of a 9:42 very hard mode run that he was listing as the "world record". Well here's a 9:39 I just posted. Also as you can see there are some bad fights in there and I would've reset but I wanted to get a complete run with two new skips I found from a Japanese world record TAS (Giant DK and Metal Mario! Thank you whoever made that TAS video!) so I can definitely grind out another 30 seconds with enough attempts and a little luck.

What should I do to get this submitted and verified to SDA? I really really want to be able to say I have the WR play through, even if it only lasts a little while.
Whoaaa nevermind guys. Twitch is full of sub 10 runs all of a sudden (which I'd never even seen a video of til this month!) like the WR went from 10 minutes down to 7:45 in a 4 week period. Crazyness. I think it's kinda sad that none of these runs are on SDA but it looks like all the real progress has been made very recently. It's weird how that happens, I didn't know about any other SSB64 speed runners in existence a month ago but all of the sudden all these people are posting sub 10 runs. I'm pretty excited, especially since 7:45 is getting into TAS territory. This is nuts.

http://www.twitch.tv/xatmamune/c/3844909 <--- 7:45, insanity!
