I've already thought about that. Bowser's doubled attack doesn't affect Squirps's shooting power, and Bowser+Thudley does only 3 or 4 (I forget which) damage to Brobot out of 255 HP. It takes a long time to do, too. On the other hand, rapid-firing  from Brobot's back with a missile and a power-up can do 15 damage in the same time period.

On the good side, I have a good fast strategy for Mr. L. I use Bowser + Carrie, and manipulate his AI (he always jumps towards you and always charges a high jump when he's under you) to make him come under Bowser when he jumps, so he starts doing his spring jump, but I hit him before he can. The Shroom Shake attempts also leave him wide open for 4 damage. Bowser + Thudley would do 8 damage, but it's too slow to avoid the high-jump. The high-jump attack does 6 damage at this point. I also have only 15 HP, and I always take 3 damage at the beginning of the battle due to Mr. L always jumping on me when I'm done switching to Bowser.

Looks like luck-manipulation is my only choice, then.
For the Brobot fight, make sure not to get hit. When you get hit, you lose the power up you have currently.

I've done 4-4 in two segments.

Segment 24 (4-4 Up Until Boss):

Segment 25 (4-4 Boss):

The Mr. L regular fight started out badly, but everything else went pretty well. Brobot went well too. You might notice the game lagging a little in some places because of all those missiles and Squirp Shots I fired.

EDIT: Based on the current times, I lowered the estimate of the total time to 4 hrs. and 50 minutes.

not bad.
Does Carrie move slower when you're using a character other than Mario? If not, when you had to switch to Peach, you may as well have stayed with Peach, since the Peach + Carrie combo lets you use my trick with fast parasolling, which would help when you jump across pits such as at 2:36 by not having to fall on ledges below. And if it does, then you should the trick anyway when you have to use Peach, since it makes parasolling faster and you have Carrie out anyway.

You should probably flip to avoid enemies a bit less, too. There was one point (don't remember where and don't feel like looking for it, sorry) when you flipped to avoid a single enemy that could've easily been jumped over. So it's understandable to flip when there are a ton of enemies in a room, but when there's just one, don't do it.

Other than that, pretty good segment. Brobot fight was great.
I'm really looking forward to when this entire run gets published!

It sounds like you really know what you're doing!

Good luck!  Cheesy

Well, as soon as I switched to Peach, I had to switch back to get the key. I didn't really think of fast-parasoling later, and I would have to keep switching between characters too (the only safe way to avoid all those crawlers in that one room is to flip, and I need Mario for that. I need him anyway in that room.

Also, are you talking about that one Pigarithm on the ceiling I flipped to avoid? The reason for that is that in 2D if I jump over it I usually end up getting hit by one of the Pigraithms on the floor. That's the reason for that.
First off, those segments are great, but there's one potential problem.  At the end of the first segment, you save while on the roof.  When you restart, you begin on the floor.  While I'll accept that the game does this to you, you might want to hit the flip block anyway,  just to ensure that the run is accepted.  Sorry.

so? savewarping is commonplace now. there's no penalty for it.
This space for rent.
I might be incorrect on this but the whole point of segment 23 is getting chocolate so he can open the door right? Well in segment 22 don't you pass up a chocolate behind the pipe in the star(where you'd normally hit the ? block for a star) room? Couldn't you grab that and keep it for the next segment? That would save you quite a bit of time if that'd work.
Oo, ever since I beat Super Paper Mario, I knew it'd be awesome for a speed run. I can't wait to see this done. My computer isn't good enough to manage all those youtubes.

a computer that can't handle Youtube? that must be a really old computer.
CHOKES
There's something that can cut some few seconds.. instead of entering through doors or pipes with Carrie, jump a bit before reaching it and cancel in the air.
It's not that much, but considering you'll probably enter with him on many other parts, it might help a bit /o/

I've done a few more segments now.

Segment 26 (Between Chapters 4 and 5 + Part of 5-1):

Segment 27 (Rest of 5-1):

Segment 28 (5-2):

EDIT: Link to Segment 28 replaced with the link to its improvement.

Watching your segment 26. When you're going to Flopville and you open the path with Fleep, just step in so you're beyond the wall and flip back instead of walking all the way down.

I'll suggest more improvements if I see any, still in the middle of 26.

EDIT: You missed the sixth block once. Tongue

EDIT 2: When you took a hit from being flipped too long shortly after arriving in Flopside, A) jump before you take the hit so you're still moving during the "getting hurt" animation, and B) don't flip back until you reach the elevator.

Segment 28 was sloppy. The piranha plant mistake took to long.

I improved Segment 28.

Segment 28 (5-2):

For some reason, I temporarily thought I had to flip when I finished the ladder. This cost 2 seconds.

better, but that mistake is ugly.

are you going to redo 26 using Potter's trick? (which i was going to mention, but he got to it first.)
THE GAME!!
A speedrun for SPM already? Sheesh, It's only a month old. And it isn't even released in PAL regions yet! Tongue

I've done Segment 29:

Segment 29 (5-3):

5-4 is going to be a major pain, with two really random boss battles in the same level (O'Cabbage and King Croacus). King Croacus is probably going to be the worse one of these, because all that throwing takes a long time and can be really hard. O'Cabbage is also much harder than the previous O'Chunks, because he actually moves fast and doesn't fall for multibounces. Therefore, I'm going to use Bowser's fire in that battle.

I'll divide 5-4 into three segments like I did with the Dotwood Tree:

Segment 30: Part up to Dottie
Segment 31: O'Chunks Boss Battle Up to Opening Boss Door
Segment 32: King Croacus Battle

fuck you i wont do what you tell me
just use the butt slam one + bowser on O'Cabbage...

its really easy.

if you have Barry (which i assume you do) you can parry all the petals and jump+parry Croacus to death with bowser.
Visually Appealing
okay. couple of icky hits there.

and Barry wastes time. totally not worth it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGtkXq-14Ao
I don't have Barry (you have to go back to Chapter 4 to get him, and that would probably waste more time than it would save). I've already worked out a strategy for O'Cabbage, as I mentioned above. Bowser and Thudley is often too slow to really work well because of the lag.
