Ganondorf = Donkey Kong LOOK IT UP!!
HOLY CRAP! I just beat McTwisterDeluxe's time on a shine by nearly a whole second, even with a multi-second mistake in it! Also, I'll embed because it seems not many people are aware of how to clip the wall fast at the end there. Will definitely upload a perfect run once I get it Cheesy

I lold.

Anyway, I want to get a few things straight here. Help from people who have worked this game for a while would be appreciated. Here I have myself a route, for any% (SS). The movement based points are purely my way of doing it, not necessarily the best way. What I DO want to know, is whether there are any major tricks I am missing out on. Those with skips knowledge for this game please help! Smiley

Here's what I got.
Airstrip (00/49)
--[Do Pianta Village Early, when you complete a shine press A+B to dive straight back in]--
Pianta Village (01/49)
- Do Fence Balance in Episode 3 (Or Damage Boost to save even more time).
- Use Yoshi Skip in Episode 5.
--[Pirahna and Shadow Mario]--
Bianco Hills (08/49)
- Skip Shine 1 and go straight for Petey Pirahna.
- When fighting Petey in Episodes 1 and 5, go behind him to make him inhale.
- Use log in the river to do a triple jump in Episodes 2 and 4.
- Go across logs and triple jump Hover in Episode 3.
--[Pirahna]--
Ricco Harbor (14/49)
- Use quick kill trick with Blooper in Episode 1 and 5.
- Pick the Green Blooper to ride in Episode 2 and 6.
- Use the shortcut in the course in Episode 2.
- Take the underside shortcut with Hover in Episode 3.
--[Pirahna]--
Gelato Beach (21/49)
- Hang around the two closest Dune Buds in Episode 3, and waterslide to the peninsula after you defeat Wiggler.
- Hover from the final mirror to the bouncing platform in Episode 4, always collect the coins on the left side of the Sand Bird
first, as it turns down that way. Also, triple jump Hover/Wall Jump+Hover to the top of the tower once the Bird screams the
second time after it's turns flat again.
- In Episode 6, if you EVER see the red coin school of fish in the open go for it ASAP, to make sure they don't clip.
--[Cutscene]--
Pinna Park (28/49)
- Use cutscene skips before and after Rollercoaster in Episode 1.
- Use Cannon Skip in Episode 2.
- Float around grate at end of Episode 3.
- Jump through spokes of ferris wheel in Episode 5.
--[Get Yoshi from Shadow Mario then enter Sirena Beach]--
Sirena Beach (35/49)
- In Episode 1, use straight shooting at first, then proceed to R+A spamming.
- In Episode 2, wall jump to second floor, then climb on ghost's into the void.
- Skip Casino Minigames in Episode 4.
- When fighting Big Boo, move into the central area to scare him away/de-spawn enemies.
- Spam R+A in Episode 6.
--[Go to Noki Bay]--
Noki Bay (42/49)
- Use wall-clip in Episode 2.
- Slowly descend, grabbing each coin on your way in Episode 3.
- In Episode 4, try and get latched onto on of the eel's teeth while it is inhaling so you can point blank them with Hover.
- Bounce off the second tightrope in Episode 6 to get boosted to the next one, then bounce up from there and go into the shell.
- In Episode 7, R+A at beginning to get an early hit, then hit him whenever he is wall jumping or otherwise climbing.
Corona Mountain (49/49)
- Utilise triple jump hovers and take advantage of the double jump you get after a hover.
- On the boat, wrap around the center pillar in either direction and try not to move a lot.
- Bowser Fight = Easy, try not to have too much height on your rocket boosts or it'll just take longer.

Note also I have ZERO Void/Secrets strats in here, pretty much because everyone will have their different ways of doing it, and putting mine in would make the route about 10 times longer. Last thing, to anyone who has seen the TAS from the last page, in Sirena Beach they use a spin jump with Yoshi to SOMEHOW clip through the floor in the hotel, pretty much shaming Episode 3 to a complete joke. If anybody has worked out how this is done for the love of god please tell me. Thank you in advance!!!! Smiley

EDIT: Also, just realised, me talking about any% SS in this thread is just about the least related type of run to the 100% Segmented thread. If this should be moved to a new thread, let me know and I will haul on out. It was pretty much the only slightly active SMS one I could find. Wink

Renebalow says it's probably a Japanese version-only trick.

I noticed playing through this again that it is fairly safe hitting the large watermelon down the hill to the contest area. I saw one speedrun after doing this where the person slowly walked the watermelon down the hill, and another speedrun where they accidentally knocked it down but they said it was luck. Anyways, just thought I would bump this thread to mention that you can fairly consistently blast the watermelon down the hill to the beach before the pier to the bar, they almost seem indestructible, the only things that seem to damage the watermelons are other watermelons, if it lands on Marios head, enemies, and the legs of the buildings(pretty much anything angular).
Snowboard Assassin
One of my favorite Gamecube games in a 100% run = beauty to my eyes.

I must say, the work for completing this game is insane, but I wouldn't hold back from that. Although I'm more into speed running Sunshine to beat it (which is really tough; I barely got through my notes list).

I'm sure you had this planned from the start; my attempt to 100% this game is to never pick up any blue coins. Even if I do, by mistake, I'll keep on going. Once I tried to 100% Sunshine in a single segment, it took me up to 10 hours to nearly reach 118 Shines. My memory fades when I lose my track of place and time.

And whenver I'm walking on the adventure field or in stages, I always slide or use FLUDD to go faster.

At the moment, my skills are kind of rusted, so I'm working my way to get back into working with this game.

Best of luck to you as well! I can always support a fan of Sunshine. Smiley

Hey guys, I'm about to enter the very slow process of speedrunning this game, mostly just getting used with speedrunning and practicing some tricks and all, however, I have a few questions. When starting Speedrunning, is it better to go with a SS or segmented? any% or 100%? Cause I'd love to beat that 5 hours run that's been sitting here for years now but I'm not sure if it's that smart to start with this. Also, is it worth getting a japanese copy of the game? Would that mean getting a jap GC/Wii?

EDIT : Oh yeah, can I actually record with a capture card? Or do I absolutely need to record with a DVD?

This probably won't be a satisfying answer, but honestly you should just do whatever you think you'll enjoy the most. If you really only want to play for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or mostly feel like doing the main Sprites, do any%. If you love the game in its entirety, the large time commitment isn't an issue, and you want to get every single Sprite (which means all the blue coins as well), go for 100%

As for SS vs Segmented, I would generally recommend SS. Segmented requires you to aim for extreme perfection on everything you possibly can, while SS allows you to slowly develop your skills with each successive run.  As for this game in particular, saving will always leave in the same place at the start of the next segment, which would probably hurt your time overall in this game. Not entirely sure about that.

FYI the 100% run on SDA is quite outdated, and has been beaten by a LOT by samura1man (I think around 3:43?).
3:43:15.
Exoray
Capture card recording is perfectly fine.
Just be sure to post a video quality test over at the tech board before you begin serious attempts, to ensure that you are recording with the right settings.

  • A segmented run would be much easier than a single-segment run.
  • 100% is a lot longer in this game, so you may want to start with any%.
  • I don't know whether the Japanese version is faster. As far as playing it is concerned, I don't think you can play it normally on an NTSC console. However, you're allowed to use the Freeloader tool built into Action Replay, which allows you to play imported games.
  • You can use a capture card.
Alright, thanks for all the answers and wow, more than an hour worth of improvement, quite impressive, I'll definitely have to check it out. I'll go with this 100% segmented run since no one else seems to be working on it anymore. I'm quite busy though so I don't expect updating quite often. Wish me luck anyway! Smiley

So, I've now acquired the required tools in order to record, but, it suddenly kind of hit me. I have a pretty silly question... How does one start to practice a 4 hours run? I have no idea where to start, how do you learn it? I guess if I do segmented I can learn segment by segment but for 15 minutes segments I'm a bit at a loss for how to practice. Really sorry about this stupid question...

I'm not a sunshine runner, but I was working on a 10 hour segmented run, so I can answer your practice question kittle.

Start with a dry run of the full game and see where your long term route problems are. Probably not too much of an issue in sunshine but foresight was an issue for me.

From there, if you're confident in your route, segment by segment should be fine. As I recall, this game has 3 save slots, and while you can't save to another slot from inside the game, you can copy saves over. And if not, you can use another memory card to hang onto them in case you decide to redo something.

I've done 15 minute segments before. I've done 35 minute segments before. It sucks. All I can say is that the more you keep at it, the more automatic the first part gets. At least in sunshine, there are probably ways to just walk over to the parts near the end of a segment if you're having trouble with them. So if you need to practice just those parts, you don't necessarily need an emulator.

So in short, start with that dry run, and make sure you're confident in your route. Then just start doing the run and practice along the way. Good luck. I may not run this game, but I love it. So I'm pulling for ya.
