Yoshifan did a couple of runs recently. MLSTRM, pinguino, and Theworm also run this game, but I'm not sure how often.

Yeah people are still running this. A good place to start would be looking at the leaderboards: bombch.us/9V there's a lot of people and videos there that you can use for reference.

As for me, I've been giving any% a break at the moment, and even not doing that much 120 just to run some other games, but if anything more and more people are picking the game up, it's never really being run by no-one Grin

As you can see from the leaderboards MLSTRM posted (http://bombch.us/9V), NEG_taro recently came back and improved his Mario 2P time to 2:34:36 (file select -> touch grand star), 1 minute faster than my Luigi 1P time! So it's the fastest time in any category right now.

NEG_taro/NEGU_taro/ねぐ太郎 was formerly known as neguro/ねぐろ, but he doesn't seem to use that name anymore. He currently streams on Nico: http://com.nicovideo.jp/community/co1304657

You should also check out NEG_taro's YouTube if you haven't already; he has some very very interesting tricks there. Especially the mega side flip and the Dusty Dune camera skew thing... I still need to look into those more.

I've recently come back to this game as well. Hoping to improve my 2:35 in Luigi 1P, and polish some level strategies in the process. That includes levels beyond the 61 star run, since some of those other levels are really interesting, and there are actually several people running 120 star lately.

Two things found from recent Dolphin testing:

1. Luigi gets more height from Nunchuk spins than from Wiimote spins! I only found this because NEG_taro observed the opposite for Mario's Nunchuk spins: Mario gets more from the Wiimote. Here's a list of the heights you get from each spin type (assuming you hold A throughout):
Mario Wiimote 283.25
Luigi Nunchuk 275
Luigi Wiimote 250.55
Mario Nunchuk 247.6
With Luigi Nunchuk spins, I was having a noticeably easier time with several difficult tricks, including: the Space Junk 1 Starshroom skip, the Beach Bowl 1 jump to the star platform, and the Dusty Dune 2/C jump to the star.

2. While surface spinning, hold Up on the stick to go faster. While holding Up, I could attain top speeds around 50-51 during the penguin race; without, I could only see speeds around 45-46. I have actually always held Up during surface spins for some reason, but never realized that it was faster.

I've been recently getting into running the Galaxy games and i'm glad to see there's still an active community for it. I'll hopefully pick this game up again once i get it. I only have one question and it's kind of a major one. I'm sorry if i sound really stupid, but, what's the community's stance on using 2P in Any%? I've been watching Negu_Taro's WR run recently to try and learn the game/see the strats and whatnot, and i noticed he seems to be the only one who uses 2P. I assume using 2P for Any% Mario is faster, considering his WR is about 8 minutes faster than his 1P WR (2:42:28). I've talked to a Galaxy 2 runner and he seemed quite angry at my idea of using 2P in my Any% Mario runs. Is 2P just something nobody does, even if it's faster? Should i use it without worrying about being hated into nonexistence by other runners, or should i just stick to 1P?

I'm not an expert or anything, but it seems like using 2P would just be a different category (not directly comparable to straight-up 1P runs) and you should do whichever one seems more fun! But I'd wait for a response from someone who actually runs this to be sure.

Largely because the only person who really runs 2P at a high level is NEG_taro for SMG1 Any% Mario, and he really is the best at Any% regardless of 2P use; so there hasn't been an immediate "need" for a really serious decision on it.

For the record, our recently added SMG1 leaderboard at speedrun.com separates Mario and Luigi, and has filters to view 1P and 2P separately (but the default view combines 1P and 2P). The tricky thing is that a 1P/2P separation would make the categories somewhat messy, since Mario and Luigi already have separate categories. You'd need 4 versions (Mario 1P, Mario 2P, Luigi 1P, Luigi 2P) each for Any% and 120 stars.

(In my opinion, separating 1P/2P could be more justifiable than separating Mario/Luigi, because the gameplay changes more... using your feet will do that if nothing else. But that's just my personal criteria, I also understand the "Luigi is new game+" thing.)

Controlling 2P is hard. REALLY hard. Neg_taro's record videos make it look easy but the timing required is quite precise and foot controls are awkward.
No one would hate it. If anything, other runners would be super impressed if you manage a good run with consistent 2P use. By all means, try it! If it doesn't work out, fall back to 1P. If it does... come back and teach me please.

Just to add to what others have said, From what I know there's only a couple of people who don't like the idea of directly comparing their times to 2P runs, and want to have a split because of that, most of the community is fine with it. And like yoshifan said, we have a filter on speedrun.com for that purpose.

Also I agree with ping, it would be really cool for someone to work out how to do it properly and start to challenge Neg_taro's time with 2P, since no-one has really come close yet. I wish you luck with learning it!
