Thanks everyone!! Smiley

Here's the timing I came up with (along with the number of stars in the segment for reference):

Segment 1 - 5:41.875  (10246 frames)  [1 star]
Segment 2 - 9:05.845  (16359)  [3]
Segment 3 - 11:52.679  (21359)  [5]
Segment 4 - 10:32.832  (18966)  [4]
Segment 5 - 9:59.332  (17962)  [3]
Segment 6 - 9:23.730  (16895)  [5]
Segment 7 - 4:31.838  (8147)  [3]
Segment 8 - 8:42.522  (15660)  [4]
Segment 9 - 14:13.353  (25575)  [6]
Segment 10 - 5:22.789  (9674)  [3]
Segment 11 - 6:03.163  (10884)  [3]
Segment 12 - 14:53.926  (26791)  [6]
Segment 13 - 24:50.456  (44669)  [12]
Segment 14 - 1:19.313  (2377)  [1]
Segment 15 - 1:48.909  (3264)  [1]
Segment 16 - 6:42.202  (12054)  [1]

Total - 2:25:04.763  (260882)

Next step, the verification copy.  I need to re-encode at least a couple of segments for which I only made splitted YouTube versions.  Other than that, a medium-quality verification copy would probably be fastest to get, but I could get it in HQ without taking too long, too (half my segments already have HQ versions).  The HQ run would be on the order of 2.5 GB, and MQ would be like 0.7 GB I guess.
GWAHAHAHAHA!
Good job on your Super Mario Galaxy run yoshifan! Segment 16 is the only one I saw around the upload time. But I've watched all segments, it's amazing. Good thing it wasn't single-segment, you might get tired out. 2 hours is a long time.

So you are planning to submit this to SDA? Good Luck!

please submit it Smiley
Sorry for delays - it's submitted for verification now, though. (And looks like it already got enough verifiers - I didn't get a chance to mention it was up for verifying. >_>)
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
yea... that's what happens when you submit a run for on a popular run...  I saw that too though, it was almost literally 10, 20 or 30 minutes after Flip posted it that SMG had enough verifiers...

I just hope that the verifiers verify quickly...
Well done yoshifan, the lava tunnel part on the last segment was pretty incredible.

Thanks!

I have some updates on single-segment 61-star runs:

By me: Luigi / 2:37:33 (SDA timing)

I just got this today while streaming live.  Had its share of good and bad, but it's looking okay for a marathon run, IMO.  It beats my run from Japan Relief Done Quick back in April, which was around 2:39:xx.

By 紺空: Mario / 2:48:47 (Nico timing; ~2:47:52 SDA timing, ~2:43:22 Luigi equivalent in SDA timing)

SDA timing, as I understand, is from gaining control (at the Star Festival for Mario; after the rabbit says "Let's play" for Luigi) to the start of the last Grand Star cutscene.  Nico timing seems to be from file select to the last "GRAND STAR GET!".

By ねぐろ: Luigi with co-op / 2:37:44 (Nico timing; ~2:37:08 SDA timing)

Co-op has several benefits.  First and foremost, if you put the 2P pointer over Luigi and press both Wiimotes' A buttons at once, Luigi will do a large jump that's similar in height to a backflip; the jump also seems to give decent horizontal speed facing forward or backward.  This large jump can be activated in midair, even after other jumps like a backflip or triple jump!  This means you can jump ridiculously high, perhaps close to 1.5x as high as you can in 1P - and the co-op jump is just very convenient in general, since it requires no setup (unlike backflips and sideflips).

Also, the 2P pointer is larger and can cause more effects (stunning enemies, hitting bouncy plants, etc.) than the 1P pointer; this makes getting star bits a breeze.  For example, I think this runner had 118 star bits in Dino Piranha, as opposed to the 50-something I usually get.

According to the runner's comments, when he utilizes co-op, he operates the 2P Wiimote with his hand, and the 1P Wiimote's A button with his right foot!
Just out of curiosity, was anybody else aware of this?

LOL, read yoshifan's comment completely.
Just out of curiosity, was this ever verified? I almost forgot about this run, and it seems to be buried now.
F*ckin' sanity effects...
Yeah, it went through verification...happened the same day my run (Eternal Darkness) appeared on the verification thread (10/20/11).  It's typical for an otherwise done run not to appear for months on the front page, I think.

I love this SMG run so much.  I said it earlier in the thread, but thank you, yoshifan.
Jack of all Trades
Nice run. Lots of cool tricks and all. But it kinda made me sad realizing that with cinematics and loading time there's about 50 seconds of dead time after every star. So when watching you learn to skip ahead. So 60 stars is about 60 minutes of fluff. Not even Mario can escape the ravages of modern gaming.
Yeah, it's about 50-60 seconds between most stars; more for certain ones like the Grand Stars.  That's probably one reason why Mario 64 is a much more popular game for racing. Tongue

Not only that, I still have to pay attention during the "downtime": I have to think about whether to cancel the starbit counting or not, scroll through any cutscene dialogue quickly (need to actually hold A and then re-press it with decent timing), know when the Save prompt is coming up, and remember which galaxy to go to next.  I almost always got everything right in my successful segments, but I've had a lot of menu stumbles in single-segment attempts (i.e. my marathon practice).

Also, really late reply to facetouch: ねぐろ's run, which I linked to in my previous post, shows a bunch of applications for the co-op midair jump.
Does anyone still read this thread? I need some help with the Dreadnaught Galaxy's hidden star (burning the garbage).
DK + Mario Kart 8 = <3

where is your problem there ?

if you have problems with the strategy here is TheOnlyOne´s 120 star speedrun http://de.twitch.tv/theonly0/b/288330323

the star begins at 5:16:35

Thanks for the video. My problems are that 30 seconds is not enough time to blow up all the trash, and I've read strategies on various gaming forums in which the best way to beat this mission is to aim the bob-ombs on or near the gold lights/coin areas. I can never aim right. Maybe I just need some practice on this game.

I have given this game a break for a few days because this one star (Garbage Dump, Dreadnought Galaxy) is seriously giving me the fits.
trepidation
If you notice, Mario can only really throw in eight directions. This should simplify aiming a bit. Also, a bomb port won't spawn another bomb until its' bomb has blown up, so you will need to take that into account when you plan your route.

I had some problems with this star as well, but it's not too difficult. Really, you should just copy what TheOnlyOne did verbatim, that way you don't really need to worry about strategy.
F*ckin' sanity effects...
Yeah, just copy the video directly.
What are the actual rules for the SS run bounty for 120 stars? Are no deaths involved, etc? I may actually be able to do this in the next couple of weeks (work is getting in the way right now).
It just basically has to be submitted to SDA and accepted. Run Submission guidelines should be in the FAQ.

If you do it deathless, that'd be intense and awesome. Good 120 star time is around 6-7 hours, iirc.
<(^_^)>
Deathless isn't really a requirement (though of course, it's better to be deathless); if the entire run is absolutely amazing, and you have one ugly death, it's still a very good run throughout (see: nemi's SMG2 70-star run). Especially if the death costs minimal time.

But, Nemi's run didn't come through. So bad example. Wink

Well, it DID get accepted. But...never got on the site. Dang. Sad
