A bit of news...I made it to 7-2 with 5 seconds lost. However, in the same run I performed a variation on the 1-2 TAS method, which saves about 5 seconds. The time would've been 8:34 if I finished 7-2.
By the way, I have a copy of the Famicom version coming in, so I hope to be able to match if not beat your run soon. I got 8:22 on Any% Save and Quit on the SNES version last night, which is a slightly different run.
it must have almost been released alongside all-stars. Or I'd assume so. I know of something called super mario usa (maybe that's what it is, I have no clue honestly)
news? it was released as super mario usa for fc in japan.
and about that 8:22, slightly different, you warp to 4-1, re-sets and start on 3-1 and warps to 5-1 and warps from 5-3 to 7-1, it cannot be done on nes.
So comparing a category that finishes 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 4-1, 4-2, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 7-1. 7-2 with another category that does 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 3-1, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 7-1. 7-2, a level less as slightly different, well, I beg to differ.
Wait, so there's no special trick involved, it's just "play to 4-1, reset, start at 3-1"? That's...weird
Yep. This seems this working only SM allstar version. Runner used stage select after warping 4-1. He simply reset game and stage select 3-1.
I think this could be seperate category. Its just any-% with reset. But yeah this seems faster route. This runner can got maybe sub 8 minutes all star version used that level select route.
Sick time. By any chance do any of you have methods for determining the pattern of plants in Wart's lair? I've seen multiple patterns when entering the room after a death, and noticed a pattern for the direction radishes fly towards, but that's pretty much the extent of what I know. I'm pretty inconsistent at hitting Wart with the 5th (second low bubble) plant. It seems like he's not always in the same position so it isn't possible to hit him from underneath or overhead consistently.
Vase pattern: center right center left Vegetable pattern: right left right right left right left left
If I lose time in 7-2, it's usually at the ladder jumps in the third room, so I wait a bit at the first birdo so that I only lose one 4 second cycle (instead of 2 cycles, which was always the norm in older attempts). The veggie/wart behavior is the same either way. If I die (which virtually never happens) I just reset.
As for wart's position, you have to have a feel for how fast you're getting to the room...otherwise it will be more difficult to throw the fifth vegetable underneath (which is the best way...otherwise it will usually just get bubbled or you will lose time from sprite slowdown on the NES/Famicom).
Hope that helps. Also, thanks for encouraging me to use a different method in 1-2.
If I lose a second or two at the ladder jumps, I keep going anyway and stop at the first Birdo so that I don't screw up Wart's position. Otherwise I don't wait. The advantage is that you only lose one cycle, which isn't really that much if you played the rest of the run really well.
To clarify, I didn't mess up at 7-2 in this run. It's still perfect.
