Doing fast carpet plus going into subcon is possible on 1-2, so yeah.

Still, will be very hard beating this run! Wink

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I don't really know what the limit would be for this. But my guess is 8:29.

And yes, this does include basically every difficult strategy. I'd like to think it's possible though.
Willing to teach you the impossible
Wow... just wow...
Yes
Hey Cak, I just wanted to pop in and say that I was thoroughly impressed with that run.

A bit of news...I made it to 7-2 with 5 seconds lost. However, in the same run I performed a variation on the 1-2 TAS method, which saves about 5 seconds. The time would've been 8:34 if I finished 7-2.

So yeah, 8:29 is totally possible.
By the way, I have a copy of the Famicom version coming in, so I hope to be able to match if not beat your run soon.
I got 8:22 on Any% Save and Quit on the SNES version last night, which is a slightly different run.

Is the 8:22 time posted on Twitch? If so I'll give it a watch for sure.

You seem to be as devoted to this game as I am, so I'm interested to see what you can do with the FC version.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
of the famicom??? huh?
twitch.tv/ccaakk
Wikipedia says it was released for the Famicom in 1992...which is news to me too.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
it must have almost been released alongside all-stars. Or I'd assume so. I know of something called super mario usa (maybe that's what it is, I have no clue honestly)

news? it was released as super mario usa for fc in japan.

and about that 8:22, slightly different, you warp to 4-1, re-sets and start on 3-1 and warps to 5-1 and warps from 5-3 to 7-1, it cannot be done on nes. Wink

So comparing a category that finishes 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 4-1, 4-2, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 7-1. 7-2 with another category that does 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 3-1, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 7-1. 7-2, a level less as slightly different, well, I beg to differ.

Wait, so there's no special trick involved, it's just "play to 4-1, reset, start at 3-1"?
That's...weird

Yep. This seems this working only SM allstar version. Runner used stage select after warping 4-1. He simply reset game and stage select 3-1.

I think this could be seperate category. Its just any-% with reset. But yeah this seems faster route. This runner can got maybe sub 8 minutes all star version used that level select route.

You'll have to beat 8:37 now. Smiley

Thanks man. I used the 1-2 subcon strat...stoked
I guess aside from that, there was maybe a second or so of improvement, so I can still do better!

Jesus! Great work Cak! I believe in you!

Myself need to get a better time for the leaderboard! Wink
Sick time.
By any chance do any of you have methods for determining the pattern of plants in Wart's lair? I've seen multiple patterns when entering the room after a death, and noticed a pattern for the direction radishes fly towards, but that's pretty much the extent of what I know. I'm pretty inconsistent at hitting Wart with the 5th (second low bubble) plant. It seems like he's not always in the same position so it isn't possible to hit him from underneath or overhead consistently.

(Correct me if I'm wrong....)

Vase pattern: center right center left
Vegetable pattern: right left right right left right left left

If I lose time in 7-2, it's usually at the ladder jumps in the third room, so I wait a bit at the first birdo so that I only lose one 4 second cycle (instead of 2 cycles, which was always the norm in older attempts). The veggie/wart behavior is the same either way. If I die (which virtually never happens) I just reset.

As for wart's position, you have to have a feel for how fast you're getting to the room...otherwise it will be more difficult to throw the fifth vegetable underneath (which is the best way...otherwise it will usually just get bubbled or you will lose time from sprite slowdown on the NES/Famicom).

Hope that helps. Also, thanks for encouraging me to use a different method in 1-2.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
You wait at Birdo? What does that accomplish exactly? I'm not sure I understand.

If I lose a second or two at the ladder jumps, I keep going anyway and stop at the first Birdo so that I don't screw up Wart's position. Otherwise I don't wait. The advantage is that you only lose one cycle, which isn't really that much if you played the rest of the run really well.

To clarify, I didn't mess up at 7-2 in this run. It's still perfect.

Btw, I will probably submit this to SDA. 15 seconds is a good improvement.
Master-88
Yeah you have to be submit this in SDA. Can we see this run before publish submission?
