Hi! I'm andrewg!
I know the warps in that game are a little funky. While ibvestigating for my TAS, I stumbled upon some smb2 all stars video with a bunch of glitches. I think the game could be broken a lot more maybe. There was some potion glitch iirc.

Yeah, I don't have a NTSC SNES yet so haven't been interested in touching allstars, but looks like people are starting to use our tricks while speedrunning it! I guess  I could learn it for future races or tournaments! And there is that PAL run on allstars on here that need to just go away, really someone should look into it. Wink

IT HAPPENED AGAIN... if this happens on Sunday I will be mighty pissed

Sounds oddly familiar...maybe I did it during my emu playing. Must have something to do with the mushroom blocks and where they land.

How am I suppose to do WR attempts when the game decide to troll me, have you seen this before, this would be very useful in a run if one got more knowledge what triggered it: http://twitch.tv/svenne1138/c/1826020

Nice find!

Speaking of happy accidents, I noticed while watching one of Jeffrosledger's All Stars streams that it's possible to do the potion glitch without having it bounce off your head. I dunno if it results in a faster 1-1 or not.

Thanks, looks like this trick was in the Tas that AndrewG & Aglar made, but it's a frame perfect trick and while you do it, you ahve to have the screen start going up. Gonna make a save-state and see if it can be a consistent thing, saves atleast 3-4 seconds, that place is hell if you don't know Hotarubi strats. And if you can get a air-jump there, you can skip that screen all-together.

Yeah, that dude is awesome! I have seen like you can do down with the potion and continue under the floor, want to take a look at that game at some point before summer. (That make two of us!) Wink
Alright so im also thinking of speed running this game. How much time can be improved on the fastest times out there?

And something I was wondering. Do you run faster when you are holding something. I know you hold "B" to run faster when you are not holding something but when you are you cant hold B.

What version of the game you gonna do? Allstars or NES, Allstars is faster and you can do more tricks on it so should not be compaired! XD

Well, only Toad is faster holding an enemy but the problem is that on NES, you cannot do a powerjump and keep holding b, then your character throws the shyguy or whatever away, so you need to do a fast pause-buffer to keep the enemy and regain momentum after a jump. On Allstars, this is not the case.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
You can hold "B" after picking up an enemy and continue to hold it. But yes, if you try a power-jump, you will throw the enemy, so you pause to avoid this.
Anyone have any idea what might have caused the enemy to bounce this way?

Oh man...jumping off the potion in 6-3. Why didn't I think of that?

edit: Ultra tight playing gets an early Birdo egg...very nice

2nd edit: confirmed on console Smiley

Got a 8:42 (with glitches) on Friday. I'd like to improve it again, but it's yet to be seen whether it'll happen.
8:37 8:35 would probably be my absolute limit.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
wow, very nice. Smiley glad to see you using glitches. the potion jump... is it snes only?

EDIT: And i assume this time is for NES? Crazy stuff. I'd like to see that run.

The potion jump works on NES. It saves 2 seconds, but only if you play the rest of 6-3 more or less perfectly (cuz of the Birdo cycle).

I added a faster Birdo strat in 6-1, and double jumping in 6-2. Also trying to get to Birdo half a second faster in 7-1, but it's pretty tough.
I'd really like to see that run.

If I don't get a faster run in a few days, I'll go ahead and upload it. That said, I've only recorded like 4-5 hours total (I practice way more than I record, kind of a bad habit).

Today I got to 6-3 birdo without any mistakes, the same place I messed up in the run IIRC. Urgh.
edit: Hmm..got to Triclyde, died, then played the rest of the game perfectly up until Wart (where I lost a cycle), got a 8:53. *facepalm*

Heheh....mostly I just shred on the later levels, so it's not advantageous to record that stuff. I'm really struggling with getting another good attempt, but I did find yet another 0.5-0.75 second time saver in 6-2. This run probably can't be perfected, for the sheer fact that a couple minor (albeit extremely hard) strats always get left out of attempts.

A hypothetical perfect time is now about 8:34.4

edit: Argh, another 8:42.....I can crush this thing.

Ended up being 8:43.1 on vhs...I think the real time was something like 8:41.8.
Anyway, I'm taking another break.

And to say that SDA published the old 0:08:52 run on the site today...
After watching your run and your route movies, I definitely believe the perfect time can be even lower. I believe the tas strategies for 1-1 and 1-2 are humanly possible and would save a significant amount of time. I doubt anything else would make as much of a difference.
twitch.tv/ccaakk
I studied the TAS too and tried to adapt what I could. I don't think any strategy where you are hitting Birdo with the same object 3 times is going to be possible. Even the 1-2 early egg (that Andrew attempted) requires ridiculous precision (and only saves 2.5 seconds anyway).

Anyway I'm not done with this, I just kinda practiced myself into a corner. Sometimes adding too many new strats is a bad idea.
