I don't even know what the fuck this is
I thought I did it a few days ago... got what I thought was a 5:05 but really was probably 5:06 with the walljump.. 313 total on 8-4.. I made an absolutely retarded mistake on 4-1 and I guess in a few other places though. Walljumping seriously isn't that hard for me... I can do it almost 25% of the time or so. I don't have the run anymore because I got mad and deleted it.. but after talking to Stanski I'm pretty sure I made more mistakes than just the one in 4-1.

Yea I gave this a few more shots, just for shits and giggles, I got a 5:05.2 with a walljump and alternate pipe.

Problems were 245 1-2 (should have restarted), 198 8-1, and still only got 213 8-4 :-(. I thought that it would save enough time to at least give me a nice 5:04, but didn't happen.

Anyways I only tried this for 2 hours and am already sick of it. Probably won't try again anytime soon.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I can get a walljump about 1/4 of the time too I think. It's just that after I play a Perfect game. I mean every level up to 8-4. I dont want to risk doing one and ruin an awesome run.  :-/

It seems like I get 313s when I do this too.... sometimes its 314, but a lot of the time the pirahna plant is in my way.

anyways, I guess I'll keep trying this.  Cheesy

"Anyways I only tried this for 2 hours and am already sick of it"

I dont usually spend more than 2 hours doing this... I get sick of it real quick. I guess that's a bad thing, it just gets me wicked annoyed.

I guess I'm going to practice 8-4 for a whole day or something.

shave off another second from smb is difficult. very hard. No one force a player to do that. But if you should succeed one day, andrew, or someone else. That player should be a legend.

Honestly andrew I think its easier just to accept one small mistake and try for a walljump later on. Most often the mistake comes in 4-2 for me, so thats only 1 time unit lost which you can make up for with a walljump.
He's back!
How many units does the wall jump actually save?

Hi! I'm andrewg!
basically its like saving 2 game units... most of the time.
21 frames twice. saving a game unit does not guarantee you save time though.

The walljump saves between .35 and .7 seconds depending on how well you perform it.

I am aiming for perfection though stanski. Maybe I shouldn't be, but it will be insane if I played perfectly. 8)
stanski, do you do the jump in 8-2 correctly to save 21 frames? I find that to be the hardest part of the run, besides a walljump if you attempt that. Lately I've been doing incredible runs, and then I die, a few were pretty good, I have to retime them and see what it really is by SDA. I played mario for a very long time yesterday, practicing different levels, and seeing if There was anything people missed, or I could improve on.

so SDA multiplies the time from when you have control of mario to when you hit the axe by 29.97/30?
interesting... Grin

I wonder if me and tiki will end up trying to outdo each other in super mario world or megaman 2. Both those games I've practiced speedrunning and was planning on doing.

OK I decidede to try out the wall jump myself, you have to jump at the last possible frame from the pipe and with a full jump, the good part is that a small jump is enough to make the jump to the pipe, So you can simply mash the A button on the descent I've made a frame by frame video if anyones interested.

You mean to get a 242 in 8-2, correct? If so, yea, I do the jump that way (same way as scott did in his 5:05). I practiced that jump a lot, so its not that bad. I have more trouble with the 3 flying turtles right after that and that damn fucking flying turtle at the end of that level. Can't tell you how many times those fuckers have ruined runs.

I also have trouble with those 3 goombas right before the area that is enclosed and has a turtle in 8-1. Its really hard to jump right before the goombas, and even harder to slow down after you jump over them and still get a 200.

Oh, and AKA, I'd do it that way but 1. Its probably harder and 2. The fucking plant is always in the way. If you watch the way I do the walljump, I hit the same pixel as you do to walljump off of, but I jump from the area after the lava. Then I do a full jump so that I hit the ceiling and come back down into the pipe. Its just as fast as doing a small jump and I found that button mashing is actually harder then just timing it right, even though I used to button mash on the walljump.

Heres how I do it in 8-4:

great vid AKA.

The damn duck in the end of 8-2 is annoying. And even so the first steps in the level. I think it is impossible to perfect it on the PAL version.
wise fwom yo gwave
First steps you just need to listen to the music. There is a certain point where the music changes and I do a full jump, then its just jumping up it like normal. I don't think I've missed that jump in a few years since my brother figured it out.

what level are you talking about?

"The fucking plant is always in the way" I've found I can just jump off the back of the pipe and still get a walljump after that. I've been practicing a lot today, and i ca do it pretty often. I dont know how it will go at the end of a perfect run though. I've been playing on the wii, so I haven't been trecording it. I've just been practicing 8-4 a ton.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
Was he talking about the [irahna plant before the pipe you go down? thats the one I meant sorry about that.

Is a 315 possible? I will test this.

8-2. Frezy was talking about it.

The plant doesn't always go down like that so nice. Sometimes you have to jump just on the edge of the pipe to be able to do it, which is a pain. Try entering that area at a different time/moving slightly slower or faster through the area and you'll see what I mean.

Yea, one of the TAS' before they started backwards jumping gets a 315 with the walljump and alternate pipe. Not sure how.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
Have you ever tried to hold forwards the whole time from when you get out of the pipe until you walljump up to the pipe and go down? I tend to exit the first pipe a bit slow to avoid me messing up. Less than .1 error. I haven't tried to see if I could improve it. When I get home I'll see if I can get a 315. You have a video of the TAS run? I'd like to see where they save the unit. at the alternate pipe, or earlier. we cannot turn around after the pipe perfectly, maybe you cna do it just slightly faster.

Times entering pipe in 8-4:
378
366
357 (this is where he makes up the time unit, he does alternate pipe slightly faster)
326

Oh, and if we could even convince SDA staff to allow the vine warp, it would save ~2 seconds, as this video was the first to use it. 4-2 and 8-4 were the only 2 improvements. Good luck convincing radix to allow it.

And getting 315 does improve the time, I'm not sure its a full .3 seconds though.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
I think it only saves like .1 so it's probably not worth it. I have to time a few things in 8-4 again to see a few things.

so how much time is actually saved by doing the walljump in nearly perfect time? the 21 frame rule isn't applied here correct? so i would assume it only saves like .5 seconds or so from playing that part perfect without the walljump.

But I need to test these things to make sure I'm right. Maybe you already timed them?
He's back!
The reason the TAS is able to do the wall jump faster is becuase it steers away from the wall for a frame before it actually hits the pipe. it saves a lot of frames, although I'm not sure if its enough to save a unit. There is a two frame window to do that near impossible move.
Edit history:
andrewg: 2007-04-07 01:51:16 am
Hi! I'm andrewg!
i dont think it saves much. if its not 1 game unit, then it's less than Judging by the comments of an old TAS, it's 4 frames faster at that point. I think. I'm probably wrong. it's probably like 10 frames, even still thats like .1 seconds.

depending on how much time the walljump actually saves will determine if I will attempt it.

Can anyone tell me about how long it takes from going down the first pipe to going down the second pipe in 8-4? My computer is being dumb. just time it accurately with a stopwatch on stanski's youtube video please.

thanks. I'd really like to know this.

someone please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question: how come no one in 8-3 ever tries to get a 244?  I know getting a 243 gives you fireworks but it more that possible to get it if you're brave.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I dont think it's possible. Can you time that for me. from the entering the first pipe to entering the second pipe in 8-4.

You have to do a backwards jump to get 244.
wise fwom yo gwave
12.8 seconds.

Walljump is basically necessary for 5:03 if you wanted it. Otherwise its not necessarily necessary.

12.8 seconds?

I dont know how you got that time. From entering the first pipe (378 to entering the second pipe (366). Is that what you timed?

well nevermind. I dont need it anymore.

I've determined that I like Stanski's walljump method best. I find it to be the easiest. After practicing this a bunch, I could do it about 1/3-1/5 times. I dont think I'll be able to pull it off near the end of a run. It just seems like too much work, or maybe that it's impossible for me. I haven't been able to do it on my latest runs where I was doing pretty well. Mario doesn't get his foot caught and I'm just like "AHHHHHHHHH"
wise fwom yo gwave
You know your lost levels time beats the current time by a fair margin. You should definately submit it.

And I don't blame you for the walljump, just get 5:04 :-). I really wish we could use the vine warp glitch :-(.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
Yeah, I know my run beats the current best on the lost levels. I had 4 deaths though. and wasted like 2 minutes I think. I might submit it, it was pretty good aside from the 4 deaths.

I almost nailed a walljump on my latest attempt! I can't believe I missed it. all that work for nothing. I was right about getting it 1/3 of the time, I cycled through the level two times more and did the walljump on my third. Maybe i can perfect the walljump. Dont think It'll happen in a perfect run though. I actually get pretty nervous when I get to 8-4 especially... I dont know how much longer I'll try this though. I'm going crazy trying to play perfect.

Even if I do nail the walljump, I'll probably be too nervous and end up dying right after. (In the water area most likely)  Cry

Maybe another week until I call it quits and probably start working on another mario game.
