1. No, I'd see know reason why you'd be penalized for that.

2.  No, nothing wrong with that. Just an alternate way up there.

3. I'm not sure about pausing the game. It's up to Radix, but you'll most likely be penalized.

4. The 16 and 70 star runs both ended when you touched the last star from beating the third bowser, so yes, you had to kill him and touch the star to stop the time.

But the 16 and 70-star runs were both for completing the game, which includes beating Bowser. However, my run is for getting all 120 stars, and since you don't need to beat the final Bowser to get all 120 stars, shouldn't the run officially end when the 120th star is obtained?

Heh of course you still have to complete the game... that's the whole point of speed run, seeing how fast you can FINISH a game ... you just happen to get all 120 starts along the way.  Tongue

Congrats on the < 3 hours time, I know someone else was trying a 120 star run and was only expecting 3:20 or so.  Is your tape an NTSC tape (north america)? If so then you can send it to me.  If you're from Europe though I can't capture the tape myself, and Nate is soon going on vacation for 2 weeks so you'd have to wait until January.  But, judging by your time, I doubt you're playing the slower PAL version!

Oh and I can just remove the minue+ of pause time out as if you hadn't done it... no sense penalizing you for a pee break.

But when you have to pee it's more exciting! Oh yeah!
I like this site name cause it's easy to remember.
Wow, <3h. Nice.

Reminds me of Banjo-Kazooie 100%...

With the Bowser fight included, and the bathroom break taken out, the run clocks in at a few seconds under 3 hours.

I did kinda crappy on the bowser fight, and I screwed up a few times in Tall, Tall Mountain. I'm going to make another attempt, and hopefully I can get it down to around 2:55.

Argh!  Will someone please just send one of their attempts in! Smiley

Though you can wait until after Christmas, as I probably won't be able to download it until then anyway...

Hmm... that reminds me of Banjo-Kazooie 100% too...

I just completed another run, this one totaling 2 hours, 57 minutes, 40 seconds.
(There's two pauses during the run, totaling 21:30, which I've subtracted to come up with the 2:57:40 time.)

I might try once or twice more, but if I don't do better by Monday, I will send this run in. So in either case, I'll be shipping out a VHS tape of a run on Monday.

Radix, can I email you about where to send my tape? (It's NTSC)

20 minutes of pauses? gee, you must have had to go eat dinner during this one or something?  I'll send you a pm with my address... but, if you're going to keep trying for a few weeks it'd be better to send it to nate. He's currently on vacation but will return in mid-january.
off topic (a little), i did one of those other little speedruns suggested (on emulator and just to see if it was possible):

NO COIN RUN

yeah... thats crap. its possible, but far from entertaining. its a challenge, ill give anyone that. theres only around 70 some stars (74 that i have at the moment) that can be obtained doing this run. and no, i never collected 1 coin. the hardest part was the princess slide at the very end.

but i just figured id post this.

cant wait to see that 120 star run. way to go... and people said it wasnt possible in under 7 hours (gamefaqs, LONG TIME ago). way to go!!
Jack of all Trades
lol, seven hours? Jeez. If I can get the best 70 in ~ 1:15...yeah.
You can get 76 stars without coins, Matt. I don't remember if this included getting the red coins in the cap palaces and bowser stages (which are not displayed in your score sheet), but I guess not since there's maybe 5 or 6 such stars, and you're only 2 short.

Theoretically (i.e. it's been done on emulator, but it's crazy for a console), the 5 secret coins in the pyramid can be done as well, for a total of 77 stars. You can make the special numbers appear without actually touching the coins, but doing that five times in a row is asking for trouble.

I don't see why the Princess Slide gave you much bother, since you can jump and back-kick in the air and take it quite slow.
i didnt get any of the red coins whatsoever. however, i was unaware of the pyramid one... i suppose if you could use the elevator well (standing tall) it might work better... but i agree its trouble.

the slide was trouble only because of that last part where the curves are. i cant see them and end up running into them. but ill try for that one here in a moment... wonder what the other one im missing is... prolly in the first snow world... prolly the snow man's head. ill go for that.

thanks btw.

im curious, how would the NO BOSS run work? aside from bowser, do you just not fight other enemies that would be bosses? and if so, which are these (just to be oh so specific; IE, would the penguin/koopa the quick count since they are kind of like bosses in that you race them)?

I received spiderman88mil's tape over Christmas and have started to capture it. The quality leaves a bit to be desired, the tracking is rather bad. Also it's EP/SLP speed so that makes it lousy too.  Perhaps I'm exagerating though.

I sent him a pm to ask for comments a few days ago but he hasn't sent any yet... hopefully he'll notice this post at least.

You can't get the snowman's head star coinless, since you need to select that star.  It's probably easier if I list all the impossible stars.

All 100-coin stars and red coin stars, including 8 castle secret stars.

Bob-omb Battlefield - Mario Wings to the Sky
Bob-omb Battlefield - Behind Chain Chomp's Gate
Cool, Cool Mountain - Slip Slidin' Away
Cool, Cool Mountain - Big Penguin Race
Cool, Cool Mountain - Snowman's Lost his Head
Shifting Sand Land - Pyramid Puzzle (now possible but insane)

Those are all the impossible coinless stars.  All other stars are possible, but I wouldn't want to try the 21 second Princess's Slide star.

On a speedrun-related note, I will try to beat the 2:57:40 time on my "slower PAL version."  Hopefully I'll finish it eventually and not get sidetracked too much by other games.

Sorry, Radix. I'm working on the comments now. I should have them ready for you sometime tomorrow.

I hardly doubt watching 3 hours of someone beating Super Mario 64 is entertaining. No offense, sure it's great that someone can do that, but it just seems like a chore to even watch someone play a game so long, considering you know what they're going to do.

And you're posting at this website why?

Well, I want to watch it.  If you don't, that's fine, but not especially relevant, I'd say...
I like this site name cause it's easy to remember.
Yeah, it isn't very relevant. I'm going to watch it eagerly, myself.
MGS for PS1 forever.
Friends of mine want to watch the Return of the King extended version again and again. Over 4 hours...boredom. 3 hour beatdown of Super Mario 64...heck yes.

And, just so I'm not flamed for saying that Return of the King is boring...I like it, I already have the movie...just not the extended version. 3 hours is long enough.

I watched the first 33 stars I usually get (stars 1-25 and 67-74 on your run).  The NTSC/PAL speed difference is noticeable, since certain things take you less time even though you make more mistakes.  You have different 100-coin routes, but I doubt those are enough to make up the difference.

A few star-specific notes from those courses: (I'll watch the rest when I get around to it)

CCM red coins: Triple jumping over the tree at the beginning allows you to avoid grabbing the tree.  I also find that longjumping off this ledge is a faster way to reach red coin 2.  Between coins 3 and 4, it is faster and safer to slide down the slope, which has an automatic jump at the end.

CCM 100-coin: You can skip any number of the 7 coins before the last 15 on the slide, thus ensuring that you get a total of 100 or 101 at the end.  This allows you to get this star with the race star, and use the shortcut for the first star.

JRB jet stream: If you swim fast enough, you can get this star without the metal cap.  The same applies to DDD, but it is more difficult since the star is lower.  I think this is faster, and it also allows you to do this course at the same time as the other courses on this level.

JRB red coins: You can longjump from around the first new block to the last new block, and immediately from there to the ship.

Also, changing the order you collect stars can make things easier and/or faster.  For instance, I save JRB's eel star for last so the eel doesn't bother me while I'm collecting the other stars.

If you'd like to discuss 100-coin and other star routes, I tend to frequent #metroid on irc.metroid2002.com.  If you don't have an IRC client, you can connect through your browser at www.metroid2002.com.

I finished watching the rest of the run and have the following comments:

Rainbow Ride: There is a shortcut that allows you to bypass the last carpet toward stars 1 and 6.  Also, the 100-coin star would be better suited to the big house star, since that path has the same number of coins, but no enemies you need to kill.  This has the added bonus of only needing to kill Lakitu once.

Tick Tock Clock: All 7 stars are possible with stopped time, and probably faster too.  For the thwomp star, you need a triplejump wallkick from below the thwomp.

Tiny-Huge Island: It's faster to sideflip from the platform with the piranha plant than to activate the switch and sideflip from there.  Also, for the 100-coin star, you don't have to go above the large Goombas to stomp them; you only need to touch them while stomping.

Also, it seems that the PAL/NTSC speed ratio is 5:6, at least for the slide timing (which is not in realtime in the PAL version).  With this ratio, the 3:15 run I recorded but was not satisfied with translates to 2:43 on NTSC.

I figured I was missing some tricks and shortcuts. I was just hoping to get under the 3 hour mark for now. I definitely think I'd try again if someone comes up with a better run. Not right now, though. I need to buy a new controller (my thumbsticks are worn out), and I'm going out of town for a week and a half, so I'll be without my N64.
