I'm wondering, how are other Super Mario 64 speedruns coming along? Has anyone thought of trying these?

--120 star completion
--no boss completion
--no coin completion
--no cap/cannon completion

I'd try some of these, but I can't seem to beat the final Bowser.

Oh yeah, how about fastest 100 coin completion of a level? That's something I could do...

*goes off to plan*

You... can't beat the final Bowser?...

I stoped at the "i can't beat the final bowser" .. have you seen the runs from (can't remember who has the recent record) and you still can't beat bowser?

How or why can't you beat bowser?

120 star run: Yes, people have thought about it and one is being worked on.

No boss: No... that's just dumb

No coin completion: Also somewhat dumb for a speed run

No cap/cannon: It's extremely difficult to get all 112 stars and it would also be a terrible speed run since it would take so long.
the one thats already on the site needs rework.. big time..

Mine? Or the 16 star one?
16 stars one

My somewhat-crappy previous SM64 16 star run got improved a little by somebody recently, although IMO the run still looks sorta sketchy. The only reason I don't attempt the run anymore is because the stair glitches were extremely random for me; literally, I don't think there's even a consistent way of getting it. It's all luck  :-/
The NTSC claim for the 16 star completion is something around 21 flat now, so yes, the 16 star run is quite sketchy. Althought I did learn one trick from it saves around 5 seconds - I always used to reenter Dire Dire Docks to save+exit to get back to the lobby instead of BitFS, which is, to say the least, royally stupid ;D)

Who is working on a 120 star one?

I'm the guy working on the 120-star speed run.  However, I need a lot more practice in order to get a decent run, especially since I recently took a long break from the game.

I have a 3:15 completion recorded from September, but I was forced to suicide 3 consecutive times in Snowman's Land (lost the shell before getting the red coins), so I probably shouldn't submit that recording.  If I could get through a run without any big mistakes, I would probably get close to the 3-hour mark.
You could do it segmented, since 3 hours is a long time to play continuous.
I don't think anyone would mind if you did... do eeeet!

The current plan is to do a single segment, but that could change if it turns out to be too hard.  I currently practice in three segments.  If I choose to segment my run, it will be divided in the same way.

1) 33 stars connected to the lobby. (0:45)
2) 41 stars in the basement and courtyard. (I got a bad 1:11 today, so I could probably get this down to 1:05 or lower.)
3) 46 stars in the upper floors. (I haven't timed this yet.)

I'm not sure how I would deal with "save teleporting" between these segments.  Between segments 2 and 3, it could be considered a shortcut, which is penalized at SDA.
Well you save after your 70-odd stars, run up to the 50-star door, jump into tick tock clock, choose the first star, and as the screen fades into white you stop the tape.

Subsequent attempts can probably begin with that fading. As for lives, you life counter might magically change..

For me, I could care less about Metroid...never been too fond of it anyway...watched a few runs...but I'm really looking forward to the 120-star mario run. If you can get all of them in under 3 hours that would be incredibly impressive.

Jak and Daxter has 101 power cells you can get but I'm sure it would take more than 3 hours to get all 101. My 72 powercell run is probably going to be about 2 and a half hours, give or take. I got 35 powercells in 54 minutes (including cutscenes).

I hope you get some soon so I can watch your awesome run.

I'm not too comfortable with the "magically changing life total" idea, since that seems a bit dishonest.  For now, I'll just stick with a single segment.  There aren't too many annoying stars likely to break a run anyway.  The worst culprits are probably the 100-coin stars in Shifting Sand Land and Snowman's Land, and those can be improved easily enough with practice.

(Also, the next course I enter after getting 74 stars is Wet-Dry World.  I don't enter TTC until I have 104 stars.)

Mkt2015: Thanks for the support.  I'll try to get it under 3 hours.  I'm fairly sure I can guarantee a run under 3:05, but I can't be sure of 3hrs until I time an optimal run of the last 46 stars.  I'll get back to you on this thread by Wednesday with a preliminary optimal time.
Daniel Viebrock sent me a link to Illu's (a Swedish player I've seen at the-elite.net) 16 star mario run:
http://www.superplayers.de/stefanmahrla/div/Illu/

It's just under 21 minutes by SDA rules. He misthrew Bowser #3 once, but that's understandable, I did three misthrows for my best time (each one costs 15-20 seconds). That was pretty much the only error (one of the most costly you can make, but.. ah well).

The stars are highly optimised. I had to go and double check if MIPS really does appear if you don't collect star 1-1, since it's the slowest star by far, yet I was almost positive you had to get it. And Illu skipped it altogether and everything worked out.. so I was wrong Grin That should help me improve by a whole minute if I can do the 4 glitches within reasonable time (I actually spent the last 10 minutes - no joke - trying to go through the first door with MIPS and it just refuses to work, so that's a bit discouraging).

The movie is poor in viewing quality (black+white, looks like a webcam, off-sync sound), and Radix wouldn't like that at all :'(. But in gaming quality, it's almost 20% faster than what he's currently hosting. Dilemma, dilemma.. =P

Anyway, the reason I can't beat the final Bowser is aiming the throw, which I never could do very well at all.

When I mean no coin or no cap/cannon completion, I don't mean getting all the stuff, just enough to win.

Ahh, the final bowser. It brings back memories of when I went to a friends house, saw him playing Super Mario 64 and I asked him if I could play. I had no idea that he was currently in the final bowser stage when he gave me the controller.

Anyway, I made it all the way to bowser...maybe it was just out of luck cause I've never owned a N64 and so the controller scheme was completed foreign to me. He didn't tell me how to beat bowser so I was just running around, trying not to get killed. I, after about fifteen minutes of running around, eventually threw bowser twice...and then when I grabbed his tail the third time I hit some button that made the camera zoom in so I could no longer see any bomb in which to throw bowser into...so I just ended up letting go, hoping that it would work. My friend was laughing at me and saying that there was no way I could throw him like that and have it actually work. He was wrong... I'm sure that that was just luck, but you should've seen the look on his face when he saw that I had beaten bowswer.

ahhh...memories

Try beating Bowser with the zoomed-in Mario head view. Now that's challenging. =)

I have determined that my final time will be somewhere in the 2:50-3:00 range, assuming I can stop making so many costly mistakes.

Wow. Very nice. What routes to the specific stars, especially the 100-coin stars, are you planning on using?

A few months ago, I was practicing a 120 star run. The best I did was 3h, 14m (I didn't record it). I've been thinking about going back to this game and trying a good run. I don't really have the right hard ware or software, though, to put it on my computer. If I did a run, could I possibly send the VHS tape to someone involved with the SDA, so that they could upload it? If so, I think I'll start playing this game again, and attempt a decent run. Thanks.
I'm addicted to games
Yes, sending a tape in the mail is the way that probably half of the runs have made their way online.

I've just done a single session 120-star run. My final time, from when I took control until I got the 120th star, is 2 hours, 56 minutes, 57 seconds. I recorded it, and would like to ship the VHS to someone for posting. I have a few questions, for anyone who can answer them:

1. Early on, I entered Whomp's Fortress after having already gotten all the stars there. I realized this, and used "Exit Course" to go back to the lobby. I'm certain it would have been quicker for me to just go back to the lobby without entering the course, but it is a kind of "warp", so, would I be penalized for that?

2. I used what I think is a glitch to wall-jump throught the red wire mesh in Hazy Maze Cave, to get the "A-Maze-ing Emergency Exit" star more quickly. I believed it saved me about 1:30-2 minutes. will I be penalized for that? If so, how much?

3. I paused the game at one point for about 1 minute, 36 seconds. Will that count against me, or can it just be subtracted from my total? (The total of 2:56:57 is with that pause subtracted. It's 2:58:33 otherwise.)

4. After getting the 120th star, I beat the final Bowser. Is that considered part of the run? I would think not, since it's just a run of the 120 stars, and not a "beating the game" run. I figured I'd go ahead and beat Bowser for the heck of it, and I just want to be sure that the run officially ends when I get the 120th star.

Thanks.
