Shut up and go back to another earth
I did the bonus lvl thing few weeks ago but i think informations to unlock this last special stage are incorrect. I did all the "classic adventure" with Mario, then the first special world with Mario too and all the rest of the special world with Luigi (and of course I got all medals, if I don't make a mistake these with mystery boxes don't count to obtain the star). At the end of that, i had 4 Stars. The only thing I didn't make was the "gold flag on every lvl" thing. However I didn't make every lvl with both characters but still I had 4 stars in my game file. The problem is in doubt I made the flag thing AND all the lvl with Mario&Luigi at the same time so I can't prove that now. But as I said, I'm pretty sure I had 4 stars BEFORE making all lvls with both characters.

All I say is it could better for a speedrun to know exactly what are the real terms to unlock the bonus stage. Because clearly, what you can find on the internet about that is wrong.

I hope I have said something useful ._.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I think the last star is beating all levels with both characters AND getting all gold flags.

A few nice IL runs scattered throughout these two videos.

I wouldn't worry about defining 100% with star coins because I have gotten them from Streetpass.
That Guy
Personally, I think I'd define it by "to first ending/Any%" and "to best ending/100%".  The latter is basically 100% Star Coin collection anyway, excluding those from the final special world level but it shouldn't be THAT hard to do so, and I don't think anyone particularly wants to double speedrun the game.
At least until such time as we are actually able to pin down what the hell the star conditions are and figure out if it's actually necessary.

Also I support an individual levels table, even though that'd be a lot of levels.
King Wabasami
Wouldn't 100% be Running through all levels with both Mario and Luigi, while getting all star coins and gold flagpoles on each stage to get The Final level?
DS Dictator
The star coins can be infinite(?) with Streetpass support, the highest you can get is 300, but 290 is the minimum to unlock all of the stages.
The true 100% is getting all of the stages cleared with Mario, Luigi and Gold Flag poles on all of the stages including 8-Crown.
Read my previous posts for a 'special worlds' ending and the normal ending run.

Apparently Greenalink already knew about this but for people who didn't:

Did you know that it's even possible to reach to the other side of the stage during auto-scrolling stages. It makes stages like W2-Battle ship very short but navigating to collect star medals off-screen very hard to impossible (especially on the later stages).
Speedrunner
Oh completely missed that lol, there's a vid anyway. Also for IL's do you have to record the bottom screen? If so I cannot participate in them :/

Necro bump.
As there are 3 topics of the same game on this site. I'll post it on the original SM3D Land topic

I can improve this as I lost the vital powerup a good amount of times.

Super Mario 3D Land Any% Speed run in 1:09:27

Enjoy watching, the first few stages are easily improvable but my optimisation gets better part way through.
Gamertag: Svenne345
Damn good start, Green. Congratz on getting the bump from twitch tv on that one.

Ok some interesting discovery.

For single segment runs, I've found out that the mystery box sequence is determined on the Mii design the player uses to create a new file.

For instance the first loadout is more of a tutorial on what it can do. Then the first normal loadout on the Any% run with warps is World 4. My 1:09 run (see my previous post) uses Miyamoto Mii and the loadout is a regular one on W4-Mystery box. Then I created a new file with a mii named Si who is a friend I know in real life. When I entered W4-Mystery box, the loadout was a rare golden one with 2 star medals instead of 1. I repeated the same test to see if it was pure luck or it had manipulation and it looks like the mystery box loadout sequence is made when players uses a Mii to create a new file

So in other words, different Mii designs used to create a new file will give different rooms when using the mystery box on World 4 (or possibly World 2 for Special ending/true 100%) & onwards. Also changing the mii partway through the run does not tweak the outcome of the mystery box.
That's an interesting form of RNG. Even more interesting that you discovered that. How much can you manipulate it?

I think it's a one time manipulation in my testing so far. The lack of save state emulators, software RNG abusing tools will make this a chore. Changing the time does enables players to get more star medals without having to wait another 24 hours in real life but the time it takes to setup isn't worth it in Any%. But it might be useful for special ending as there are 8 boxes which can be used to skip 2 auto scrolling stages, that's if the newer 8 boxes doesn't give you an 'already collected' star medal.

I have attached a document of the Mii that enabled me to get a good room on World 4. It shouldn't take too long to reach after starting a new file with this Mii.

Attachment:
That strat for 8-6 onwards that Greenalink was using brings a whole new meaning to the term "death warp".

Is it used to skip an autoscroller? If it is, I think it's OK (even though it looks bad while you're doing it). If not, I recommend deathless as a more sensible category for that game.

Hmm. I guess skipping the last level is OK on the basis that you're doing a whole load of skipping levels anyway in that category. (And as an added bonus, you can't do that in the 100% because it skips star coins.)  You could do it in warpless, but deathless warpless would probably make more sense as a category specifically to disallow that.

Some good confirmations to tell you all:

So I did a warped any% route (including P-wing strat on W8-Bowser's Castle 2) and then I got 290 star medals to do S8-Bowser's Castle. Completing that unlocked the next objective to complete W8-Bowser's Castle 2 again for the secret ending. I didn't clear all of the stages as I left S2-1 (autoscroller with jazz music) out on purpose plus W8-Bowser Castle 2's star medals due to P-Wing strat and relied on mystery boxes for more star medals. Some were awesome golden ones.

Quote:
Due to the Star Medal requirements of the final level, it is impossible to complete the entire game without playing any Mystery Boxes. Special 8-Castle requires 290 Star Medals to unlock, while the normal levels only contain a total of 285 Star Medals.

There's 94 stages maximum before S8-Bowser so that's 94x3 = 282.
This means Mario/Luigi is 8 short to unlock S8-Bowser and there are 8 mystery boxes you can use. This means you can reach your 290 target. IF the player gets 3 lucky golden rooms and/or abuse a change in the 3DS clock to wake up the Mystery Boxes then it's possible to skip a stage* or 2 depending on the player's luck.

*preferably an auto scrolling stage like S2-1.

World Map Mystery Boxes
Apparently according to the Super Mario Wiki site, the mystery box loadout varies on World maps

Like this one that I can get with my Si Mii

10 Crates, 4 of which contain 1-Up Mushrooms, and two Question Blocks containing a Super Leaf and a Fire Flower respectively. Found in World 4.

Quote:
15 Super Leaves and a P-Wing. Found in World 1.

If you Youtube search videos that shows players getting a P-wing from W1 mystery box then it means that in theory it's not possible in Any% route to get a P-Wing loadout in a mystery box (as we skip W1 Mystery box due to a warp in W1-2)

Defeating every enemy in a Box will cause 15 Coins and a Star Medal to appear.

Ok so the February 2013 update

- I am having a small break on the any% speed run route after AGDQ
Kosmicd12 and ねぐろかんじちょう are the only players to get sub 1-hour (SRL/SDA/JP RTA timing methods).

Kosmic is very close to getting the WR run and knows a few more time savers ねぐろかんじちょう has not used in his run, this includes:

- Golden Box in World 4
- Risky time saver on W3-4
- Riskier blind strat on W7-ship
- Long jump bounce time saver on W8-2
- Earlier & riskier jumps onto flying ? boxes on W8-4

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0As-xrBJmh2yxdEVpSk4zNEFtYklOUXRwUVlKeFcxckE#gid=0

On Friday 1st February, I did a first full length run of the special ending category, this ending includes the photo of Princess Peach wearing a tanooki suit -see attached image below-

- A black shirt mii enables me to get 2 golden boxes part way through Special Worlds
  - This means I can get away by skipping 2 star medals throughout the entire run.
  - I did die quite a reasonable amount of times and had to restart a few times to keep my powerups
  - My first attempt was 3:05:23
  - I haven't tested out the other colour shirts yet, so one of them COULD have a playthrough that encounters 3 Golden Boxes
    - The special thing about 3 golden boxes is that you have enough extra star medals to skip a level and still hit 290 to unlock S8-Bowser's castle.
  - The special ending run will include 2 'die 10 times to get P-wing strats'.
First one on W8-Bowser castle 1 and use it to skip the final boss battle and the second one to use on W8-3 the remaining optional stage, picking up one from there enables me to skip the final boss battle again.
  - Obviously if you encounter all 8 boxes, you can go to the 3DS system settings and change the clock to go back a few days, this should re-activate all 8 boxes for the runner to visit and get more star medals. It's not always an extra 8 as some of the rooms are the same and gives you a 'collected' star medal instead.

Because the true 100% involves revisiting the same stages as the other character (& golden flag pole finish) and S8-Crown as both characters, I can estimate a good run lasting under 6 hours.

Ive got 5 stars on my file and here's each one meaning #1 beat bowser in world 8 as mario #2 beat all the levels in all the main worlds #3 collect all star coins including special worlds but not including the purple ? Boxes #4 clear special world 8 then return to and clear 2nd world 8 castle (mario or luigi) star5 get the gold flag on every level including special worlds and clear every level as mario and luigi and once all this is done u will unlock a new level in special 8
