Obligatory "speedrunning another Mario platformer" topic.

This time, the game requires you collect X star coins before you can progress to certain levels. And no warps between worlds except 1-2. So planning which star coins to collect will be quite the task Smiley

I'm more surprised that the 3DS still has good recording for Greenalink...  Granted though if you do shut off that "3D" it is somewhat the same thing as the DS...

Still, it would be hilarious to see the 1st speed run for a console that's hasn't hit 1 year yet...  best of luck to whoever attempts the run...

an individual levels table should be done too since the game tracks your completion times in each level once you beat it. it tracks the time as "xxx" using elapsed time instead of regular minute:seconds timers.

it could be a very long table factoring in the special stages.

I was avoiding this page to avoid spoilers. But I'm here now since I've completed regular World 8 and just unlocked Luigi.

The game is very speed running friendly than SMG1/2 due to the fast paced stages.

The Tanooki powerup is a must have in almost anywhere, longer long jumps, multiple wall jumps (look at W7-1)
The tail enables Mario to contact items, such as the star coin on 8-5 or 8-6 without having to wait for the platform to fall down.

The fireflower is underused in this game. The bosses have the 3 hit rule like New Super Mario Bros Wii making speed kills with Fireball spam not possible.

The Long Jump I rarely use because you cannot adjust the direction/position like in the past 3D games, and the increased speed compared to the Past 3D games is very little this time. I will stick to regular jumping for SS runs and only use LJ if it's straight and safe.

There is a warp on one of the stages in World 4 that takes you to World 5. But the number of required Star Medals to at least reach the ending is 100 (33 stages x 3 medals = 99) That's 34 stages minimum, not counting the Pink Mystery Box Stages, that is if you can reach World 8 just as fast as the past 2D games.

The roll jump, conversely, looks like it speeds up Mario considerably, though that might just be a trick on my eyes. How wieldly is it?

The roll jump is very unwieldy. You keep all momentum and can't do anything, even Tanooki float. It's very good for quickly getting done a stage when you know what to do with it, though. I got a clear time of 46 seconds in 2-2 (no star coins), and I'm pretty sure 45 is possible.

Actually, it seems that it auto cancels after a little bit, so it'll be even more useful in stages where your destination is significantly lower than where you jump from.
DS Dictator
I just beaten my personal best on W2-1 with 3 star medals. Roughly 4-5 seconds faster (58). I know a trick that makes long jump distances more feasible by
Performing a Dash speed regular long jump,
Performing a tail spin attack as soon as you are starting the long jump, this enables the Tanooki flutter to start earlier making it easier to clear long gaps. Also because you are fluttering, you gain full control on the direction.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Speaking of jumps where your destination is significantly lower than the start, I got 33 in S4-4 (0 star coins, 42 with all 3). I also got 44 in S3-3 with 0 coins (49 with 2, probably not worth it to get the third except for 100%) using an incredibly obvious shortcut.
Everybody DANCE!
Oh, how I wish this game could be played on a DS Lite...
Just curious, would any% only be normal worlds?
Because for special worlds, 100% is nearly identical to any%, I collected every single coin until the last level, and the last level needed 290 to unlock, and I had 291.
(nearly identical because you could choose not to collect any coins in the last level)
DS Dictator
Well there are warp pipes on the regular worlds but I am not sure if there will be enough levels to collect 100 Star Medals for W8-Final Castle.
Warpless is an obvious choice as you can't skip Wx-Castle/Battleship, but we can skip the locked stages in some of the worlds since those ones are optional.

Any % Warps
Any % Warpless
100 % = 100% Regular and Special Worlds*

*I haven't 100% this myself yet so I might need to update the 100% definition of this game.
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
does the 100% include gold flags? the game tracks them.

In order to unlock the final level, you need 5 stars on your file. One of those stars is getting all gold flags.

So yeah.

But also one of the stars is beating everything as Luigi. I don't even know if 100% is viable (or at the very least conducive to sanity) if that has to be done. Either way, to even get to S8-Final-Castle you need to get all Star Coins in every level, so you might as well take the little bit of extra time to get the golden flag. But that Weegee...
DS Dictator
I just got 3 stars on my file now.

The Mario/Luigi check appears after clearing W8-Castle the moment after the Tanooki Toads find a photo of Bowser kidnapping the princess again.

The Gold Flag although is a small extra task, messing it up means re-doing the entire course again. Tanooki reduces the chances of screwing up the most important jumps.
But Luigi, required to clear every stage as well... wow that nearly makes the game nearly as twice as long.
I still haven't got every single star medal so I do not think you get a star on the file for collecting every single one, remember Donkey Kong Country Returns: not only it had Mirror Mode to increase the % but also Time Attack. Some players think an 100% run on DKC R is clearing 9-1 and obtaining the Mirror Trophy.

Unless I'm mistaken:
The easiest way of calling it an 100% for this game is clearing S8-Castle then W8- Final Castle to show a picture of Peach wearing the Tanooki Suit. The Golden Flag doesn't affect the actual gameplay progress much compared to the Star Medals which are fully required to complete the game.

I'll get this game at the end of December, I watched Greenalink run of World 2-1 on SM3DL and run was very good,
Nice, great game I'd say even through I haven't played it yet.

W7-4 A, B, C
W7-5 A, B, C
W7-ship A, B, C Autoscroller

W8-1 Avoid A unless you have boomerang. Get medal B, don't forget to LJ during the spiky boulder chase sequence.
W8-2 A,B, C
W8-3 Optional Stage I skipped because I am near the end of the game.
W8-4 A, B, possibly C if the skip doesn't work
W8-5 hold UP during start, A
W8-Castle REQUIRES 90 MEDALS  A, B, c
W8-6 B, C [Depends on current total]
W8-Final None needed, last stage REQUIRES 100 MEDALS

The warp route will have a total of just over 100 medals, this is to make alternative routes if you lose a certain powerup.
For example W2-3 (8-bit sprite stage) medals A & C are worth it if you have the Tanooki powerup to spin the wooden gears.

A warpless route will have a different Star Medal route since you are not skipping the non-optional stages.

Good thing to know: When in the air from a long jump, you move VERY fast to the side. On stages where you have to go down very far (man am I obsessed with these stages or what?) it's generally beneficial to jump off at an angle and steer yourself towards the goal. Tanooki suit is of course great for arresting a fall if you can't line it up perfectly (W 5-5 for example).

Also, I'm really only interested in doing individual level runs. I have no patience for doing a full speedrun, so I'm completely ignoring the whole "you need star coins" thing. Of course, a Weegee run would need no star coins, but I don't think he's significantly better to warrant a separate run (unless that run were pure speed with no intent to get any star coins of course).

I imagine ILs are the only way the bonus level is going to see the light of day.

I don't think this is true.
I just got 4 stars, but I haven't used Luigi and I don't have all gold flags.  I do, however, have 310 Star Medals, S8-Castle cleared, and then W8-Castle again to see the picture of Tanooki Peach.
I had 2 stars after beating W8-Castle the first time, and 2 stars before doing S8-castle again.

What I want to know is: how are the stars awarded?  Because I want to play the bonus level but I don't want to do all the levels again with Luigi, or bring a Tanooki to the end of each level so I don't miss the flagpole if it turns out to be unnecessary.

This also may change how 100% is defined, since I doubt a 100% run would go through every level with Mario and then again with Luigi.
DS Dictator
I had 3 stars then after clearing the all of the levels as Luigi and with golden flagpoles. It unlocked S8-Crown and a 5 star rating on the file select screen.
You had 310 star medals... I currently have 300 after completing S8-crown as both Mario, Luigi and did the gold flagpole finish.
It seems that one of the stars is obtained by collected all of the star coins that are from the regular/special stages and not the mystery box stage... I guess.

Did you know that it's even possible to reach to the other side of the stage during auto-scrolling stages. It makes stages like W2-Battle ship very short but navigating to collect star medals off-screen very hard to impossible (especially on the later stages).
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
^Really? Every time I tried to get even a little bit off screen (or inadvertently did so), I would fall into the void before I thought I was off the stage.

Anyway, I spent a lot of time trying to speed through the final level. I have come to the conclusion that I'm terrible at this game. But hey, I got up to killing the two bosses down to 98 seconds! Still can't get past everything else quickly and without dying...
The only way to unlock the bonus stage is by getting all gold flags, beating every stage as mario and luigi. That was the only way I got the bonus stage to appear. Would that be the true 100%? or just Peach in the Tanuki suit?
DS Dictator
Clearing 8-Crown with Mario, Luigi & Gold flag pole finish would be 100% but what is more interesting is the maximum amount of star medals. 290 is the minimum to unlock everything but I have 300, while 'I have no name' has 310.
The Tanooki peach photo is pretty much the 'special world' ending similar to Super Meat Boy Dark World ending.
Obscure games ftw
310 without 8-Crown, by going back to old worlds and re-doing the active mystery boxes with every unlocked world.
and if 8-Crown requires all gold flags AND all levels with Luigi, I don't plan on unlocking it.  That just seems tedious at best, frustrating at worst.
