Part of a balanced breakfast.
This is just a personal preference, but I wish we had a run with the in-game audio. Everything else looks good so up to the end of Goo Lagoon, although I wish there was a fast alternative to the Tower Bungee. That trick is still too damn hard.

I do to, but my dazzle is broken and doesn't have audio anymore :/. You should be happy the video is still working, really.

Tower Bungee skip isn't that bad, I just didn't practice it at all that day.

Didn't know that about the Dazzle being broken. Hopefully you can get a new one.

I guess I just need to practice Tower Bungee skip more, if I ever plan to return to this game.

1:19:59.5 run by me:

In Flames We Trust
My reaction to that run:

Brilliant work bro, I can't help much with the speedrun, but I'll be sure to keep up with the progress in this thread. thumbsup
Oh god that run looks fun. Please do keep with the progress, I'd love to see this go farther. Might even give learning it a shot myself to add to the community.
I got a new PB recently, might as well make that known:

With the mistakes in this, it looks like 1:18 is a reasonable goal for me.
New record (1:19:26.7):

I got this run some time ago:

It shows off the current route and some new tricks.
This game has gotten a lot more interesting in the past few months. Major skips and even new movement techniques have brought the time minutes lower than I ever thought could be possible.
hi i herd dis were WR happens yes
Holy mignoli! This makes me want to grab my PS2 back and start running the hell out of it. In fact, I think I will Smiley
Any pointers on what to work on initially?  (And are most skips also possible in the PS2 version?)
Part of a balanced breakfast.
PS2 version has the slowest load times, but I don't know much outside of that. The most important one I think would be Cruise Boost, and I don't know if it works on PS2.
hi i herd dis were WR happens yes
Good to know, thanks Smiley I'll pop by a retro game store and see if they have the gamecube version.
I picked up BfBB a couple of weeks ago and have been learning the early parts of the game lately. All has been well and good until attempting to get the backwards boost in Goo Lagoon (around 16min in the run from itsPersonnal). Is there a dedicated method to setting this trick up? I seem to get into the backwards portion, only to have Spongebob ram himself into the tower a few times until he eventually gets pushed to the side as seen in the run, only I have no luck getting boosted, instead it just makes me lose my boost.

If that doesn't make sense, I can record some footage of it to better explain.

Anyway, after watching the run, I still haven't managed to figure out how to properly set it up/ pull it off, so any insight would be great.
If done correctly...
The trick you're referring to is called the spongeglide, and no one has figured out a 100% consistent method for the trick (or any other trick for that matter). Like most other tricks in this game, everyone figured out their own consistent methods for the trick and stuck with them. The best suggestion I can give is to do what all the runners did, and figure out your own consistent strats.

If you want to know what I look for as some kind of basis, then take the remainder of this paragraph with a grain of salt since my methods are not perfect. What you're aiming for is to be slightly right from the center of the red button while being nearly parallel to the lifeguard tower (lining up the very right side of the lifeguard tower with the left side of the gray tiki helps me find the right angle) because it will make you move to the right at a speed that will end up putting you on a walkable part of the distant island. You also want to ground pound very shortly after touching the buoy above the button in order to have a better chance at ground pounding non-floor (which causes the glitch in the first place). Also, it's good to keep Spongebob facing the screen as he reaches the distant island because certain facing angles can make him instantly drop into the goo and drown.

If what's been happening to you is anything similar to what happens at around 21 minutes in the run from my last post, then you're getting pretty close to doing the trick correctly.
If done correctly...
Here's another run. This time, it's 1:09:29.84:

Wow. It's truly been a long time. Not sure how exactly to get into this. I still love this game, and I cannot wait to speedrun Rehydrated upon release. I got my wife (then, my girlfriend) into speedrunning in 2010 while she was getting me into games like Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, and of course, Battle for Bikini Bottom. This username was chosen because I was using it for dance games, mostly In The Groove 2. I go by Reiden Lightman now-a-days, so seeing this old username in the history video was absolutely surreal. I apologize for being a huge jerk back in the day. I'm not going to sugar coat it. I was a huge jerk. That was in my control and I've come to regret it. Something that was out of my control: I had no job, no money, and didn't come from a family that could afford any form of recording equipment. My phone at the time couldn't record 3 minutes, much less three hours, otherwise I would have tried to get real footage of real runs up. That was out of my control, yet, I do apologize. I can probably remember my old route. Was very very similar to the speculated route, probably with worse sock choices, though. At this point, I'm surprised this thread still exists, my login still worked, and I can still make a reply to this.

To anybody I may have inspired (doubt it): thank you for running this game.
To any who has ever done a speedrun of this game: thank  you for running this game.
To anyone who even played casually using any speedrun tricks: you freaking rock.
To anybody who helped bring the time down through runs or discoveries: thank you as well.

Seeing this game's time come down and the miraculous spawn of the magnificent community around this game embodies what speedrunning is about. Fun, community, and seeing how low you can go regardless of who actually gets the record. I'll never stop being a speedrun at heart. And I'll probably never stop watching BfBB speedruns on YouTube. And I'll always hope the next speedrun marathon will include this game, and I'll always be disappointed during any marathon this game isn't included in.

Keep speedrunning everybody.

P.S. In case there's half a soul wondering why I left, there things happening in Majora's Mask I was hoping to get to. At around the time the WR for that game was approaching 1:35-ish, I was still struggling to get below 2:25-ish. So, I ended up not recording runs until years later when I started submitting Ocarina of Time runs and Majora's Mask 3D runs. I forget which one I started submitting first.

It's crazy how far the game came to man. You probably think you didn't inspire many, but without your interest 10 years ago, maybe most of us in the community wouldn't be here today. There probably wouldn't be a history video on it too. I'm glad you were able to find the video man! Hope to see you around the community more!

Also, big shout outs to you too, Hazel! You definitely helped bring people into the game!

I only got around to watching this video now, so I'm pretty late to the party. I guess I was the only speedrunner at the time who ever talked and showed his face. lol It definitely delivered on the nostalgia, so I really enjoyed it (whenever I wasn't listening to my voice/looking at my face. :p)
