So I've been looking a lot at this game the last few weeks and I've decided I want to run it.
Looking at the online leaderboards, I always come like 5-10 seconds short of the best times after optimising my times and while I could accept maybe a second or two from pure optimisation I feel like there has to be a lot of strats that I don't know about.
Unfortunately, this game is unTASable, has very few resources online and is tedious to record so progress is slow. However, some general things I've figured out from recording, playing and comparing:
- Classic Sonic -
* 3-taps seem to be the fastest spindashes
* Spindashes should only ever be done from a standstill. The fastest method of travelling is "rolljumping" (or whatever you want to call it) by far. Hold down+forward and jump is all there is to it
* The game reintroduced a speedcap for running (like sonic 1) but rolling seems to keep the speed (like running in Sonic 2/3/K). Usually it's faster to run in slopes though unless you already have a lot of speed
- Modern Sonic -
* Jumping while boosting on flat ground or downward slopes makes no difference in itself
* Boosting into badniks doesn't affect speed
* If reboosting in the air from plain ground is faster, it's negligible (<2 milliseconds)
* Dashing while boosting -might- save ~3 milliseconds or more depending on when you do it (falling)
* Reboosting after jumping from an upslope can save roughly 2-25 milliseconds depending on the situation just from speed alone
* Boosting > boosting while sliding > running > sliding in terms of speed on flat ground, but the difference is a lot more complex on slopes as is evident from videos of Emerald Coast
The following are videos of the fastest speedruns that aren't plain playthroughs I could find on youtube. I'll work more on expanding it and contributing myself, especially for stages that have unoptimised runs or bad strats. I'll also work on rerouting the stages that might need it as Classic Sonic doesn't gain his dash until after Big Arm and Modern Sonic doesn't gain his stomp until after Biolizard
Stage strats (IL's)
Here's a playlist with all videos I found in order of stage and speed
So yea, any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I can spark some interest from others to try and run the game too. I will do my best to update the stage strats with videos etc, especially the ones that need videos of runs without using certain abilities.
QUESTION: Should this game be timed real-time or in-game? Afaik there's no real punishment for being fast like in the Genesis-sonics so initially I'd say real-time is good. At the same time, the in-game timer is accurate from what I can tell and the only other parts are skipping cutscenes and choosing the next act. Pausing isn't very helpful either so I can't see any abuse coming from using the in-game timer as long as the runner doesn't decide to go to the bathroom in between acts or something. As long as the stuff in between acts are reasonably fast I'd vote for in-game personally.
