So I've been looking a lot at this game the last few weeks and I've decided I want to run it.

Looking at the online leaderboards, I always come like 5-10 seconds short of the best times after optimising my times and while I could accept maybe a second or two from pure optimisation I feel like there has to be a lot of strats that I don't know about.

Unfortunately, this game is unTASable, has very few resources online and is tedious to record so progress is slow. However, some general things I've figured out from recording, playing and comparing:

- Classic Sonic -
* 3-taps seem to be the fastest spindashes
* Spindashes should only ever be done from a standstill. The fastest method of travelling is "rolljumping" (or whatever you want to call it) by far. Hold down+forward and jump is all there is to it
* The game reintroduced a speedcap for running (like sonic 1) but rolling seems to keep the speed (like running in Sonic 2/3/K). Usually it's faster to run in slopes though unless you already have a lot of speed

- Modern Sonic -
* Jumping while boosting on flat ground or downward slopes makes no difference in itself
* Boosting into badniks doesn't affect speed
* If reboosting in the air from plain ground is faster, it's negligible (<2 milliseconds)
* Dashing while boosting -might- save ~3 milliseconds or more depending on when you do it (falling)
* Reboosting after jumping from an upslope can save roughly 2-25 milliseconds depending on the situation just from speed alone
* Boosting > boosting while sliding > running > sliding in terms of speed on flat ground, but the difference is a lot more complex on slopes as is evident from videos of Emerald Coast

The following are videos of the fastest speedruns that aren't plain playthroughs I could find on youtube. I'll work more on expanding it and contributing myself, especially for stages that have unoptimised runs or bad strats. I'll also work on rerouting the stages that might need it as Classic Sonic doesn't gain his dash until after Big Arm and Modern Sonic doesn't gain his stomp until after Biolizard

Here's a playlist with all videos I found in order of stage and speed

So yea, any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I can spark some interest from others to try and run the game too. I will do my best to update the stage strats with videos etc, especially the ones that need videos of runs without using certain abilities.

QUESTION: Should this game be timed real-time or in-game? Afaik there's no real punishment for being fast like in the Genesis-sonics so initially I'd say real-time is good. At the same time, the in-game timer is accurate from what I can tell and the only other parts are skipping cutscenes and choosing the next act. Pausing isn't very helpful either so I can't see any abuse coming from using the in-game timer as long as the runner doesn't decide to go to the bathroom in between acts or something. As long as the stuff in between acts are reasonably fast I'd vote for in-game personally.
Thread title:
I haven't played this, but I know Water Palace 2 actually has a glitch that skips the latter half of the level. After some searching I found the video, uploaded by the same guy who posted the video you have in your list.

Oh that's really nice, thanks Parax. It might have slipped through my fingers after a couple hours of searching and indexing ;).

I tried the trick and got it first go, so at least it's not some pixel-frame-perfect bullshit, all you have to do is jump at the right spot, but seeing as it only saves around 5 seconds and being so late in the game I wouldn't exactly say it's worth resetting over. He was right about the game lagging too, which is something I've noticed in a couple places. Usually enemies are lined up on the ground one after another and if you're e.g. coming up from a slope, boosting into them might be faster, but also lags the game. Especially if you're hit in an area with a lot of objects (Sonic 1 flashbacks again) the game can lag tremendously. I don't know how it affects the timer at all though, but from the video it's clear that it at least slows down.

EDIT: Yea it's definitely random from what I can tell :/.

Today I learned about "Homing Boost Glitch" from a certain Sonicfan340. Here's his exact words on how to do it:

Quote from Sonicfan340:
Homing Boost Glitch is very hard and will take many tries to perform first, second and even hundredth time. You need to boost mid-air to the enemy and just when you are about to hit it you use homing attack. If done correctly Sonic will launch far with very fast speed instead of stopping after hit (This is because the game still thinks you are Homing Attacking and launches you towards target with high speed, but as you've just killed an enemy with boost, it just throws you forward).

It's kinda hard to explain, but when you manage to do it, you'll know it worked. I managed to do the Homing Boost Glitch only once with perfect run, so I got 42:XX, if done twice or thrice, sub 42 is possible, but absolutely hard.

He also educated me on the booster physics. They actually make you go faster in this game! But apparently, the effect is canceled if you boost so I guess boosting has a speedcap just like running normally with classic Sonic. I'd say it is pretty well evidenced by Foxms15's Green Hill 2 video I got listed in here. However, he did say that you should start boosting as soon as you get back up, contrary to what the video is doing.
So Two Three Years have passed and surprisingly there have been a lot of good runs submitted to youtube! Here is a playlist if you are interested! Sonic Generations 3ds best runs: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQ1PGdbc4iMf-Rj1YdarV_GmKO_NN24JX
