difficult and stupidly random
The Marathon will happen March 11th - 20th, 2016.
It will be streamed on http://twitch.tv/speedgaming

The schedule is here:  http://snessuperstars.org/schedule/

Unscheduled space:
There still some room in the schedule for games to be added (mostly in the early mornings).  As long as you choose a timeslot that is currently empty, you're welcome to add a game.  We're also open to other suggestions about how to fill the time.

Commentary:
If you'd like to commentate during a run, please ask the runner first, and then contact me.  The runner gets the final say on who is doing commentary.  If you're a runner who is looking for a commentator, you can post in this thread or contact me directly.  If you're a runner who prefers to do your own commentary and doesn't need any help, also let me know.

Contact info:
You can PM me here on the SDA forums or send email to feasel@snessuperstars.org

Volunteers:
Contact me if you'd like to help out.  Here are a few areas:  Commentary, hosting, player setup, art, web development, backup broadcasters, restream servers, video editing.
You can read the details here:  http://snessuperstars.org/volunteer/

Thank you everybody who has responded so far!  Your help and advice is greatly appreciated.
Anything else?  Ideas?  Feedback?  Please post here in the thread.

The website is up and submissions are open!
The Marathon will happen March 12th - 20th, 2016.

You can submit your games here:  http://snessuperstars.org/submit/

Submit as many SNES/SFC games as you like.  For races, only one person needs to submit the game (but it's ok if multiple people do).  Make sure to check with the other racers before submitting their names.  If you're not sure if someone else wants to race the game, just submit the game as a solo run and mention the potential race in your notes.  If you have commentators in mind for a run, please put their names in the notes field.  If you already know your availability for the week of March 12th-20th please put that in the notes as well.

Timeline:
The game list on the web site will be updated as runs are submitted.
The submission deadline is Feb 1st.
On or before Feb 1st, all runners will be contacted to ask for their availability, unless they've already contacted us or given this information in the submission notes.
The schedule will be posted by Feb 5th.
After the schedule is up, host and volunteers shifts will be determined.  Contact me with your availability around that time.

Commentary:
If you'd like to commentate during a run, please ask the runner first, and then contact me.  The runner gets the final say on who is doing commentary.  If you're a runner who is looking for a commentator, you can post in this thread.  If you're a runner who prefers to do your own commentary and doesn't need any help, let us know in your submission notes.

[quote="feasel"]I'm organizing a marathon of SNES speedruns.  I'm very happy to see that there is plenty of interest in doing this.

WHAT:

A speedrun marathon devoted to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Famicom.  Not a charity event -- just doing it for the sheer love of the SNES.

WHEN:

March 2016?  SNES games are much longer than NES games on average, so this will be too long for just a weekend.  The third week in March (14th-18th) is the most common week for spring break in the US, so that seems like a good target (along with the weekend before and/or after).  How long the marathon actually lasts will depend on how many games are submitted, but I think the limit should be March 12th-20th.  The dates are still flexible, so I'd welcome your feedback on that.

WHERE:

This will be an online event -- runners will stream their gameplay (and microphone if they choose) and we'll restream it to the main channel -- http://twitch.tv/speedgaming -- along with commentary.  For races we'll show all the players side-by-side.  There will be a maximum of 4 people per race, since any more than that would be too much to fit on screen.

I can provide the hosting machine, restream channels, website hosting (once the name is finalized), and some admin tools to make the broadcast run smoothly.

GAMES / RUNNERS:

I hope to do this without making any cuts based on how "marathon worthy" a game is.  All games deserve a chance.  There will be room for lesser-known games in addition to the well-known ones.  While the blocks of popular series will mostly take place during evenings, we'll try to mix it up a bit and give some other games a chance at the spotlight too.

There will be no "awful games" block.  Each game will stand on its own merit, and the viewers can decide for themselves how they feel about it.  With good commentary and a talented runner, any game can be awesome.

While we'll aim to get the top runner(s) for each game, you don't necessarily have to be the WR holder to participate.  As long as a runner is capable of times that are in the general vicinity of the top times for a game, they are welcome to play.  If there are multiple runners, we'll do a race (or let the runners work out among themselves who will do it and who will commentate).  For races we want to make sure that all runners have PBs that are at least somewhat close to each other in order to keep the race interesting.

SIGN UP:

A signup form for players and volunteers will be available soon.  For the time being you can indicate your interest by sending me (feasel) a PM here on SDA, a DM on twitter (http://twitter.com/feasel0), or an email (feasel@gmail.com).  I'll be making a spreadsheet to show all the games, runners, and volunteers.  I've already marked down the people who have replied to the initial tweet.  The marathon is a long way off, so it's fine if you want to wait a bit to see what your availability will look like.  This won't be a first-come-first-served deal, so there's no hurry.

VOLUNTEERS:

Here are the tasks I can think of now, but more things will come up as the event approaches:

Commentary -- Some games will already have commentators lined up, and some runners will prefer to do their own commentary, but for the rest we'll need people to learn about the game and provide commentary during the runs.

Hosting -- It's good to have a person who stays in the call for multiple games and provides some continuity, introducing the runners and commentators, and filling in the gaps between games with conversation, factoids, or interviews with the runners.

Setup helpers -- This is EXTREMELY important for making sure that the runs happen on time without delay.  The job is to hand out stream keys to the runners, help them with setup issues, test the stream to make sure it looks right, and do a sound check to be sure that runners who are streaming game + mic + skype achieve the right balance between them.

Art -- We need stream layouts, graphics for the website, and banners for runners to put on their twitch profiles and social media.

Web development -- I can provide this, however if someone else wants to offer their services they are welcome to.

Computer / internet connection -- While I plan to offer my stream machine and internet connection for use in this marathon (with remote operation, because I probably need to sleep at some point), it would be good to have one or two other people available as a backup in case there are problems and someone else needs to run the broadcast from their machine temporarily.

RTMP servers -- We might end up using hitbox for the individual runner streams (like BoNES used), but sometimes this causes strange problems with streams not loading, so I'm going to look in to setting up dedicated RTMP servers (it's pretty easy with NGINX).  I can host a couple of them, but with the constraints of my poor residential-cable connection, it might help if other people ran some as well.

Highlight videos -- Someone to put together some video clips of SNES speedruns to fill time while setting up for the next run.  We'll be adding extra time between runs to ensure that the schedule doesn't fall behind.  If there are large gaps we'll fill them with bonus games, but for the small gaps it would be nice to have a playlist of SNES speedrun footage available.
Thread title:
Will be glad to help out with hosting, graphics, and highlight videos.

When it comes to the graphics, do you have a general idea of how you'd like things to look, or have you gotten that far?  Give me a shout on skype, or post some details here; i'll kick around some ideas as well.

Happy to play, comment, host and setup. I just wish I could determine when I'd be around for said week (stupid senile manager).
As I said on Twitter, I can do some of the legwork before/during/after. Hosting, highlight cutting, pre-setup for runners, backup RTMP ingest, whatever. I've got a flexible schedule and will probably be around most of the event anyway.

I could also throw in Cool Spot as a quick 15min run and maybe Live A Live for a long overnight run (It's a 6hr RPG). I wonder if Darbian would want to race Spot, even though he'll probably waste me.
I haven't done any speedruns of SNES games, but I've beaten nearly 300 SNES games in the last year and a half. I could easily learn strats and whatnot for any games I've finished to help with commentary (it should be well over 300 by the time the event happens).

I could also do hosting, if need be, as well as a setup helper. My rural interwebs is probably not good enough for something like this, but I can certainly offer that as well.

I just created my account here just for this and I'm certainly up for helping with anything.
This is just a humble suggestion to consider using Discord or teamspeak instead of Skype.

The main reasons:

1. Individual volume adjustment for everyone.  Someone too loud? Adjust downward from the broadcaster end.
2. The call doesn't end when the main caller hangs up.
3. Multiple rooms and privileges, which Skype does sort of have, but can be awkward.

This would make it easier to help set up the rtmp streams as well with full voice support

Along with that I may be able to help with providing an rtmp server backup.  My connection is usually stable.

Lastly, I think March 13th is the start of DST in north america.  So ita it's something g to keep in mind.

Good luck!
may use a few too many Kappas
I'll definitely have to derust my Tetris Attack for this.
Dapper as fuck.

It is, this is a good point to consider.  Losing an hour needs to be accounted for.

+1 for this. Discord is amazing and they're small enough, and this event would be big enough, that talking with them would probably get us some priority and PR.

However Discord isn't perfect and it's prone to its episodes. I recommend having a fallback. Mumble or Skype or whatever.
Is PJ
I am definitely interested in playing and commentating!
I can't speedrun any games but I can help with art and banners. (just not graphics for websites or layouts since I don't know how to do any of that)
I am interested in playing and commentating as well.
bichGOAL
Not sure how you'd want to handle it, but I know I and other snes RPG runners would be interested.
OneHans
If there is one thing we should learn from Best of NES marathon then it's Discord instead of Skype (in Skype you just had this one tiny chat room for everything which suddenly got very spammy and messy, in Discord you can create several chat rooms) and enough time buffer.

Good luck Smiley

Banners for twitch profile are usually about 320x100.  As for website graphics, when we get the basic framework for the website up we'll have a better idea what's needed for that.  I don't have a particular theme in mind yet -- let's give people a week to see who volunteers for artistic stuff and we can all have a meeting and see what ideas come out.

I certainly agree that Skype has the fewest features of all the voip alternatives.  My only concern with switching to something else is that everyone already has Skype installed and knows how to use it, whereas a different piece of software would mean that we now have to help everybody set up THAT in addition to all the other stream-related stuff.  You might think that everyone would be savvy enough to handle this on their own without needing help, but it's been my experience seeing Mumble used for online events that this is often not the case.  Hopefully Discord is a bit easier to configure than that.

I d/led Discord and it looks pretty nice so far.  Anybody else think it's worth it, or have an alternative they'd rather vouch for?  Worst case scenario if it (or whatever we use) gives us problems we can always drop it and go back to Skype.
Dapper as fuck.
Discord also has a web interface that doesn't need to be downloaded.  That's what I used for Osey's Cali Fire Relief Marathon.
i would be interested in running a few games (games where there are no other runners lol)

The CalFire Relief Marathon used Discord, and it went fairly well.  There was one blip on the 2nd day where the Discord servers went out for 15 minutes, but otherwise, it was an excellent alternative to skype.  Being able to adjust for loud/quiet runner and commentators was huge for our restream efforts.

One thing I will say though is that even though it has the web client, it NEEDS to be downloaded for voice communication.  The web client was pretty unstable in the chat rooms, often cutting out and not letting people speak at all, even though they could hear fine.
Dapper as fuck.
Was it?  I must have gotten lucky then.  I'll download it next time I need it then.

It seemed like Best of NES had a schedule that didn't update to reflect the changing schedule very well (or I didn't notice it updating).
Does Horaro update quickly and easily?
Perhaps a schedule that actively updates the user's browser, and perhaps notes runner times would be nice.
SPEEDruns not SAFEruns
Very cool idea Feasel. Hopefully I can get a game together for it and participate

Very down for running and commentating.
Also, Discord is a pretty nice alternative to Skype. Maybe have Discord as the main voice app, with Skype as a backup for people having difficulty with Discord?

Down for running and commentating. Great to see a SNES marathon being put together, you are awesome.

What do you think would be the longest estimate you'd likely accept for a SNES game?

This sounds awesome, I'd love to be participating in that. Most of the games I run are on the SNES Smiley
SNES rules!
A SNES marathon! I'm very interested in participating as well.
