I'm Hyped for this, I wish I could think of a way to help.
Roads? We don't need roads...

Rad... They have taken me...
So I had better tighten up my Soulblazer run for a race with Le_Hulk and Everhate. Lol

On a serious note, will games released on multiple consoles be considered. Or must they be SNES exclusive?
i would think you'd play the snes version in a snes marathon

Updated the opening post.

Submissions are open!  http://snessuperstars.org/submit

I've contacted the people who responded about running or volunteering.  If i missed you, please let me know.

It's looking like we're going to use Discord for the marathon, and use Skype as a backup in case people have trouble with it.

There were many suggestions offered for the name.  We went with "SNES Super Stars" since it was by far the best suggestion, and the domain/twitter were available.

Please let me know here or via PM if you have any ideas to make the marathon better, or if you'd like to volunteer.  Thank you to everyone who has responded so far!

It shouldn't matter if the game was released for other platforms, as long as you play the SNES version here.  It doesn't need to be a SNES exclusive.

Quote from the_roth:
What do you think would be the longest estimate you'd likely accept for a SNES game?

No specific limit.  We'll have over a week so there should be enough room for some long games.  If too many very long games get submitted we may need to prioritize, or perhaps have a bonus stream that runs over into the next week, but i'm not sure it will come to that.
All the things
I submitted my games, but due to the number of games and my somewhat limited availability, I'm fine if a few need to get cut or are run by other folks.

Question: Are hacks allowed, within reason? I've been thinking of submitting the FF6 randomizer as a race (not that Dessy or I are any fast at it), but with rando it's mostly about what seed you get. Just fyi, some of the traditional exploits have been patched out, so someone like LCC couldn't run it and get the times you'd expect for the standard FF6 any%. It would put the estimate between 12 and 15 hours.

Nevermind, it has been brought to my attention that LCC has been getting times of 8-ish hours for the rando. (In other words, it's all academic at this point.)

Just a reminder that the deadline for submissions is tomorrow (Feb 1st).  If you have any SNES/SFC games that you want to submit now is your chance!

I submitted the Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse and left out my time estimate like a genius - 20 minutes.
I just submitted 2 games, and now realize that the deadline has passed. No worries if they do not get in, as deadlines should be honored Wink

Thank you to feasel for organizing this event. Seems to be a real good one.

The schedule is posted!

The best way out is always through!
Eeee, this is so awesome! I'm afraid I've no skills in art or technological things, but I'll watch and cheer everyone on as much as I can! It'll be interesting to explain to my boss, for sure...
I have a question about commentary. I noticed how some runs have external commentators, who are presumably commentating the run from a remote location (relative to the runner & stream). Say if I wanted to do this as well, how would one go about synching the streamed run and the commentary? You guys probably have a good solution for this in place (I'm guessing itd involve Skype?), I'm just curious what it is and if I should consider asking my friends Joe & Marius for SMK commentary. Awesome schedule btw, this is gonna rock!

Thanks guys!  Glad you're excited for the marathon.

If you find commentators for your run let me know so i can write them on the schedule.  Runners will be streaming to an RTMP server instead of directly to Twitch.  Commentators can watch that stream directly so they'll only be seeing about 3-4 seconds delay from what the runner is seeing.  Should be good enough for commentary.

In cases where the runner is not going to use a microphone during the run, we can also set it up so that the commentators' commentary lines up exactly with the gameplay that the viewer sees.  We can also do this even if the runner is part of the the Discord/Skype call, except that the runner's voice will arrive a few seconds ahead of the gameplay, which might be acceptable if the runner is planning on letting the commentators do most of the talking.
Thanks for doing this!

So right after this schedule was posted I was informed about all the birthday parties going on the weekend of the 12th... Maybe if I do it through the week in the early evenings I could use more capable Internet but there are some scheduling issues with doing that, so I can't say when I'll be available at all until much closer to the actual date... Sorry about this. Is the schedule flexible enough to fit me in once I know when I'm available?
I'm signed up to provide commentary for Yoshi's Island but, unfortunately, I've been saddled with a commitment I can't break that starts an hour before the race is scheduled to begin. Unless the marathon is running well ahead or well behind (preferable for me in this case) or you're willing to switch Yoshi with something else, I'll have to bow out of that duty.

Sorry to hear.  We probably can't move Yoshi's island at this point.  Hopefully someone else will be able to step up for commentary on that game?
I have a question?  Are there going to be standard layout(s) for this, or will you want us to simply be running our game full-screen (no splits our personal-streamer layouts) and it will be grabbed for the marathon?

The runners will stream only their gameplay and a timer.  No background.  The gameplay should be scaled so that it touches the top, bottom, and left sides of the screen simultaneously (i.e. all the excess blank space should be to the right of the gameplay).  The timer should be placed in the lower right corner.  We recommend a resolution of 854x480.  If you need to make it smaller due to computer/internet limitations please keep the ratio at 16:9.  (i.e. the horizontal resolution is 1.7777777 times the vertical resolution).
Frame rate should be 30fps (not 60).  Video bitrate should be no higher than 2000kbps.  Audio bitrate should be no higher than 192kbps.

If it's not perfect that's fine.  We can do some cropping.

If you're not planning to commentate during the run, please stream *only* game audio, not your microphone or the Discord audio.  If you are planning on commentating (alone), please stream your game audio and microphone but not Discord audio.  If you are planning on commentating with other people, please stream your game audio + microphone + Discord audio.
Make sure that one of the setup helpers listens to your stream ahead of time to ensure the audio volumes are balanced.
My poor computer can barely chug out 360p at 30fps, barely. I can't afford the cpu for anything else, so I was hoping to commentate using another device... Is that workable? I'm not 100% sure I will get the chance to procure such a device... I probably wouldn't talk all that much anyway b/c speedrunning takes all of my cpu too.

I had a bad experience with Discord, where I would lose connections in one direction or another to different people, seemingly at random. I would yell "CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME??????" and no response, meanwhile they were probably screaming back "WE CAN HEAR YOU!!!" and then I would hear somebody respond to them by saying "Who are you talking to?". Gah I was so frustrated; very distracting trying to play with that nonsense going on.
difficult and stupidly random
If you want to just stream your gameplay and not have any voice call that's fine.  Nor do you have to talk during your run -- you can just focus on playing.

Somebody is going to restream it right? I want to do a voice call but not on the same computer, so whoever is restreaming I was hoping would call me...? Like I said, I probably won't talk much but I want to be involved in the commentary at least a little.
Hello Feasel! I'm enjoying the marathon so far!
I want to add Joe Bernier as a commentator for my run. I'd also like to know the streamkey (or however you stream to an RTMP server, never done it before). Thanks!
