I found out that learning how to keep up with the rhythm in boss fight is the hardest thing for me, during practice yesterday I choked really hard on King Knight. The fun thing of this game, as mentioned also at AGDQ, is that every player does different minor things and has different setups that lead to the same results. Just practice hard even if you have very little free time like me!

Hi, I'm looking to start running this game. Just wondering if this tutorial that BustahWuff posted is still relevant?
After seeing this at AGDQ and getting the game for Christmas, and thoroughly enjoying it, I'm thinking of picking this up as one of my first games to speedrun. You guys and other runners have given me a bit of a head start (hopefully). Wish me luck!

Mostly, the only thing that isn't relevant now is the second duck knight video. I am also making new content for the game daily now, so stay tuned. If you're just starting maybe check out my movement guide!

Dude, that's a sick quick kill, that might actually faster in any% as well. I have to ask, though, does that work the same on the normal fight as in the refight like that? Because his pattern is slightly different in each fight.

Nope, cannot be done in normal fight because he likes to fly away. Might be the same or slightly faster than the normal any% ver we use, so we are anchorless and charge slashless now I guess!

Well, we might need it for the anchorless fight, not sure yet. Further research required!
It still speeds up the normal fight by a few seconds. I have a strat for that fight too but I have yet to get a recording.

I don't know why I haven't posted here since I started speedrunning this game. Maybe too busy or whatever. Anyhoo...

I do this pretty substantial skip in Mole Knight's stage.

This is kind of old, so forgive the tiny size of the game screen. I assure you, my current version is much bigger.
Ruling the cosmos!
Yeah, we found that already. Would've been nice if you'd posted it earlier X). But yeah, most people that are still running yhe game are doing that skip. Thanks for discovering it, though, it's an awesome. I was always hoping that someome would find a use for the Phase Locket's ability to reset your momentum, so I'm really happy that that's there, thanks man.
Dougtrio trio...
No problemo.

Plains seems to be another tricky stage for some people here. Fortunately, I almost never seem to have this problem.

I utilize a few tricks here and there that really optimizes the stage.

@1:21 I time this moving platform so that when I jump off the edge, I always land right in front of the beetle and shovel cancel it without losing my momentum.

@2:00 I really hope this little trick becomes popular, because it's a pretty substantial time saver for this particular stage. When you make contact with the tiny block, smash it then immediately shovel cancel the big one without losing your momentum. Then, just infinite shovel your way through an on to the next screen.

@2:07 It's possible to just walk off the edge here while holding Down+Forward and still make contact with the bubble. Just watch the slime carefully though. Sometimes, he won't be in the perfect spot for you to bounce off him and up the ladder.

@2:32 I do a screen transition jump here. Kinda like with the phase locket, transitioning from one screen to the next halts your momentum. Doing this here allows me to clip the corner of the left block and drop straight down to the dragon. I destroy the right block on the way down to save an extra frame. Also, I don't do it here, but if you manage to hit the dragon's bubble and not the dragon itself, you can set yourself up to hit it's backside on the way over which will zip you into the next screen. Saves a frame I think. Props to Bustah for this little trick.

@2:45 Speaking of Bustah, here's another decent time saver I pull off here that he came up with. Rather than digging straight down through the blocks vertically, we go horizontally utilizing the low ceiling of the blocks to get down faster. There's still little you can do about the slimes though other than hope they aren't in your way.
Been a while since I've posted in here. Maybe this video will get more people to run NG+. Here's the new optimized Mole Knight fight.

Bad at game
Yo fellas. Been learning any% for this game for the last few weeks (major shoutout to Copilot for the tutorial), finally decided to sit down and try a full run. Managed to get a time of 1:13:45 by some miracle, died 15 times total but always right after checkpoints so it wasn't too bad.

My question is, what do I do from here? Do I just keep grinding out runs for a while until I get better and better at the game or do I try to implement new strats found since July of last year and get better at those instead?

Also this game is way harder than it looks holy fucktits

Short answer: Yes.

Really it depends on what your plans are. If you want to try to approach the top folks in the category, you should spend some time learning the newer strats/pathing, and in so doing you will improve at the game. You will want to continue doing some full runs to stay sharpe and put what you're learning in the context of the entire game, but yeah, you will want to get those deaths down and learn faster strats.

In my experience, cutting down from that many deaths isn't too bad. Cutting down from low single-digit deaths to zero deaths is trickier, but like anything else, practice makes perfect.

Good luck!

Yo, Patty, don't watch my tutorials though, outdated.jpg. Thanks though, glad to hear that people are still getting use out of them.

But yeah, biggest thing is getting better at the game and cutting out deaths. It might be good to implement some of the more updated strats, like that newer Phase Locket skip in Mole Knight's stage, but as far as the whole run goes, keep your route tweaked to your own liking to give leeway, don't be a mad man, actually do get hearts and all that good stuff. But I would recommend checking out some of BustahWuff and CapnDrake's runs to get some of the strats for individual levels.

And Bustah, grats on the run, that's pretty awesome. Think we'll ever be seeing a 45 run from anyone?

Yo, new fight's pretty cute, I like that, that's pretty awesome. How much experimenting have you done with that trick? I have to wonder if it has any application anywhere else.
Dougtrio trio...
The trick can only really be done on bosses in which a door closes behind you as you enter their room. So basically, it will only work with King, Treasure and Mole.
groovy

At the rate people are discovering new things about this game, definitely.

Yo, YCG just sent out an e-mail, so the Plague Knight campaign will have a playable demo at PAX, and it's scheduled to come out Q2, so it should be relatively soon, lookin' forward to it. Anyone possible heading out to PAX, maybe be able to tell us how it is when it happens?
I have a different setup to jump only the second gap in that beetle room, too. But I am working on getting this one consistent.
