Does anyone have a current route writeup for Any%? I'm trying to get back into running it, and when I was streaming, I was told several times that my strats were quite outdated. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey BlackLightAttack! I forgot I told you I was gonna write something up, I'm sorry. I just got home from work, and so I took ~30 mins to write this up for you real quick. Please let me know what information you need added.
Shovel Knight finally released on 3DS and WiiU in Europa past week. Completed it and instantly wanted to speed run it. So far I only watched the 50:06 run by CaptainDrake and I have some quick questions. I hope they have not been asked in this 25 pages thread :\
Are there any differences between PC and WiiU? Only thing I could think of maybe quicker loading on strong PCs, but maybe this is not even the case. Also: What button config are you running?
Yes it has been asked, but it's not a big deal. Only difference is the fact that you can quickly switch between items using the touch screen on the Wii U gamepad, making it that you don't have to open the menu to switch items (which is usually pretty slow). People still run primarily PC because YCG has said that they're adding quick swap buttons to the game for PC (which they're still yet to do), but whenever that happens there will be absolutely no differences whatsoever.
Are there any badass NG+ Low% runs? I'm practicing the stages for it now. Polar Knight stage is under work now, the boss is a pain in the ass with the double damage. It's neat managing your health, found some fun tricks to avoid damage in some stages, I'll probably put them in a video sometime. Boss rush and Enchantress 1 are going to be brutal tho..
Thanks, getting boss rush consistent is going to need some time.. Pretty much one fuck up can ruin the whole thing and accidentally hitting the platter with a bomb in it isn't helping at all
Remember all of those wonderful arguments we had about map RNG? Well YCG just tweeted out some good news for us. Their idea that if your time is low enough, then only Reize will spawn. The catch is that if you beat Reize, everybody else will spawn still, so 100% runs are still doable. Yo, I've got to say, that's some pretty sick news, I can see a lot of life being breathed back into this game on that news. Thoughts?
Hey everyone! Sorry if this counts as hijacking the thread but I've been thinking about learning Shovel Knight as my first speed game. Are there any useful resources to get started? I've watched a few Low% and Any% runs and I am debating which one to focus one. Any suggestions? Thanks
chaos orb route is harder than the flare rod route. that's really all I can tell you in terms of getting started. other than that there's a route doc a few posts up
Best resource, imo, are runs. Luigi's got a point, orb route it harder, and also most higher level runs don't get health upgrades. If you go to the game's PBTracker page then there should be links to videos or VODs of all runs, and you can skim those to see what different people do (since there are a lot of minute differences that people do in route, flare vs. chaos, number of hearts, etc.)
For anyone curious about the new Specter change, YCG messed it up by a miscommunication. I was the one who requested the change and they interpreted it differently. Luckily, Specter will be fixed when Plague is released, YCG has confirmed it to me, sorry for messing up Specter for now though guys :x
Edit: Also if you guys haven't seen it yet any% (at least my route so far, Drake is working on a strat to make it work for Flare Wand, hasn't got it yet) can now be done anchorless. Combine that with one less magic upgrade (40 now) and all you need is 4 checkpoints in the whole game!
GRATZ CAPTAIN DRAKE! I watched your AGDQ run, super sick stuff. I haven't really kept up with the speedrunning scene since school started, but watching how the strats had evolved was amazing. I'm also glad to see you're using my beetle strat in the propeller knight stage <3 Keep up the great work

I've started learning any% for this game roughly a week ago watching the WR video, I suppose this mean the WR isn't updated anymore. Am I right?
The current wr is held by Capndrake, it is mid 46 mins. You can find the archive of it on his twitch page if you haven't seen it yet. He uses the flare wand in his route which is much different than the chaos orb route. Which one you use is your preference, but it changes a lot of strats and routing in the run.
I've recently started working on segment practice for Shovel Knight. I've been practicing Plains exclusively and while I'm steadily cutting down my time in the stage, I'm still having trouble trapping Black Knight 1 in the AI loop for the quick kill. I jump, tag him then slightly move forward by he either attacks and I land on his shovel, or he moves under me during the third or fourth jump attack. I never seems to lock. Does anybody have any real pointers on getting this guy locked so I can cut my time way down on this fight?
Make your jumps very light, very short, you don't want to jump very high, and move forward while you're jumping. You should almost always be holding forward, letting go only when you're right in front of him, when you swing. Once you hit him a couple of times, it's just a rhythm, so it's easy to keep it up at that point.
