Hey guys, been just browsing as a lurker here for a while, but I wanna contribute and run this game along~

I wanted to help out by a few things I've figured out here, the first part here is one of the optional bosses, Black Knight (Though you can do it on the first fight as well.) I didn't like to pogo off him, so I figured out that quick jumping and swinging works really well on him. I did it while streaming today so it's a highlight here of what I did: http://www.twitch.tv/tyrakstinger/c/4569202

The other things is for The tower of Fate: Ascend, during the auto-scroller climbing up.  Once your past the moving block, onto the breakable ones.  You can jump up past the spawn of them, making climbing that part much easier.

One more things, since I'm new on here, where does one go to get into the ORC?

Yeah I made a video the other day of a Black Knight 1 quick kill, slightly different since you don't have relics at that point

As for IRC, just join #shovelknight on http://www.speedrunslive.com/channel/
I leave you guys alone for two days and we're already to 14 pages, my god. I didn't get a chance to play at all this weekend, but I hope to fix this throughout this week.

Do we have any solid videos of complete runs utilizing some if not most of the strats up on the doc at this point for those of us who are more of full level learners, or is it just the small individual tricks still?
Likes SoM far too much
There's a 56 min run on PBTracker.net
I trip over my own feet in game.

So far seems to be individual tricks. I've been trying to get full levels recorded, but keep having mistakes screw them up. >.<

Here once more for lazyness sake as embed!

Shoutout to the guys on irc to instruct me how to link twitch and youtube Tongue

oh yeah, one more thing:
Jekyll and Hyde (alchemist or whatever) apparently have shared hp, but depending on which form you lasthit will drop a chicken (as hyde) or a mp pot (as jekyll)
In total it seems to be 24 hp, and i didnt find a consistent way of damaging it, aside from sticking to the corner and continuously whacking him.

I wanna try and ricochet one of those flashy potions back to him but that proves to be rather tricky.
someone manage to do that? would be nice to now if it did considerable damage.

I always kill him as Hyde via the quick kill (see page 8), and he just about always drops both a large mana pot and a chicken. So I'm not sure that's correct.
As for the potion hit, it's sort of just luck as to whether or not there's one on the way to getting behind him. To add to that, if your estimate on his health is correct, then the potion hit does about 3 or 4 damage.

I haven't kept up on all the info in this thread (maybe the OP could be updated to contain some valuable info on what's current), so it's totally possible I'm going over something old/known already. Anyways, I'm guessing Chaos Sphere is out of the question for any%, but maybe it might be ok for some bosses in new game plus. It'd mostly be used for bosses that go back and forth and have large hitboxes if it got any use at all, since the fight arena is bounded.

My phase 1 for the Plague miniboss was garbage, so ignore it, but phase 2 seemed okish. Someone less bad at this game could probably make Polar Knight faster than that if they get him to constantly run with the orbs in his hitbox. I didn't try too hard, but it seems like he's triggered to run as soon as you hit him once when he's chucking snowballs at you, so it's probably doable. Also I love that double KO's give you the win.
I trip over my own feet in game.
I posted a video previously about killing the first two tentacles at the same time, but warned you could miss the first one while killing the second one. Here's a video of that:

Note that when I land on the spikes, I'm still in invincibility frames but you can't see them. Also I intentionally took damage in order to kill the third tentacle and used the invincibility frames to kill the fourth one.

thats pretty cool! Funny thing i noticed is that the top tentacle turns upside down when you go under it haha. I also take it thats the fastest way to do the room?
Here's the clip/zip that Sent found on the IRC.

http://www.twitch.tv/literallypixels/c/4573340

When using the knuckles (which might not be needed), stand directly ontop of spikes when you kill him. Theory is that the room reloads itself for the next fight, and since you're on the spikes which are one or so pixels below the floor of the stage, you fall through and are warped to a different screen. Pushing any buttons here will crash the game.
I've been curious about speed running Shovel Knight so I have been lurking some Twitch stream archives as well as this thread and I thought I will add a couple of quick things.

On the Lost City bouncing goo ball room after pogoing over the wall, you can hit the goo ball placed on the dirt before it lands on the lava, meaning you can skip waiting for a second to appear. Jump cancelling your swing on the goo ball after this would also save a tiny amount of time, but you have to be careful to space it properly so you don't accidentally land on it as you fall downwards. Here's a video (the platforming after pogoing over the wall is a bit slow, but you get the idea):

Secondly, I noticed in the alchemist quick kill video that the player uses the Flare Wand after he transforms to finish him off. I made a relicless video of the same trick, if you do the lowest jump possible and jump cancel your swings he will go down very quickly. I've seen people do this, but I'm not sure they would be inputting it the same way as I am. If you mash attack and jump as fast as you can you will always be doing the shortest jump possible, meaning swings will be cancelled more often and you will be inputting attack rapidly enough to account for this. As long as you manage your spacing by tapping right while you do this, he will remain in hit stun and you wont be hurt. Here is the video:

I'm not sure if these small adjustments are worth adding to the Google doc, I'm not sure of the etiquette with that kind of thing as I haven't posted here before. Thanks!
Good inclusion, Bleep. That's one I've been doing with little consistency (because I'm bad, not because it's hard), so I'm glad it was captured.

I'm amazed at just how quickly you all have broken this game down into exploitable components. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting so some schmo like me can come along and run the game better. We're all in your debt.

I see that folks are starting to get quick kills for...just about everything. Is the google doc being updated to list which items are the quickest for killing each boss? Or, more to the point, has anyone compared the quick kill time savings to the time it takes to go get each item? I'd check but I cannot access the google doc from work.
.
just a quick reminder for everyone new to this thread that most of the actual chatting happens in the #shovelknight IRC channel on irc.speedrunslive.com irc servers. I updated the irc info to the doc

Yo, real quick, Pixels, I love your crazy slow strats for Polar Knight, you might want to work on that.

Beyond the map RNG this game is pretty fun to speedrun so far. Cheesy

RNG so far:
Slimes: Stay still, move left/right, jump left/right, jump delay, chance to jump immediately after landing.
Flying Rats: Slightly affected by your location but still very RNG.
Boss Rush Order (It's not based on deaths in their stage, money gained in their stage, or time taken in their stage) Though it may be based on something else since it doesn't appear completely random.
Frogs: 3 different jump lengths, jump left/right, 3 different jump timings(immediate, average, delayed)(chance to jump immediately after landing)
Platter Contents
Boss Fights: Some exceptions of course, but every fight has some form of RNG. #FuckPlagueKnight
Wavy Missiles in Flying Machine
The blue flying dragons with orange bellies: Swoop low or high randomly
Copilot, I was being safe because it was 5 AM and I wanted to go to bed, but I had tried to kill him with the knuckles like 10 times before that during boss rush and kept dying from being reckless. I didn't have much mana so I was taking my time. I'm normally never that slow fighting him.

I found a bug. Not sure how useful it can be to speedrun the game, but in Tinker's level, one of the first siderooms it about 3 moving platforms around a spike floor over a hole, and an elevator with a rat on the right. The elevator itself does not sync at all with any other platforms, but if you manage to get on the elevator's left edge, and that the top moving platform will be over you when you reach the top, you won't die, but instead clip trough the elevator. Could be worth exploring to see if there's any out of bound bugs anywhere. (I was not able to stay in the elevator for a long time, and I don't have all the relics to test with)

I want to say that it is the faster way, but if you have only 4 full circles of health, this and the next room's damage boost can take you down to half health, which could be dangerous. It does seem faster though.

I tried to do something with that glitch. I was in the elevator, but whenever I moved, it popped me back out. May be different in other areas though.

Same thing can happen at the end of the stage right before the boss fight. The stairs you make out of hitting the crank. If you wait long enough, the stairs reset themselves, so if you're standing under the far right edge you can get shoved into the staircase itself. Sadly when I tried this I couldn't move anywhere but back out. The staircase is now up and I can't get to the switch to try the trick again without playing through the stage another time. I'll try it again later.
