Secret of Mana

I'm sorry, i said the next time i post the run will be recorded/done 100%, but actually it's not the case, but now it's just a question of time.
I took a huge time for to find how to record with board of acquisition, because my PC/SNES are PAL but my TV is SECAM ( i'm french ) so the screen recorded on my PC is good ( finally ! ) but the output on my tv is a catastrop. But finally, i took a way for to minimize the distorsion on my TV, games remains harder, but in all honesty, it's playable.
So you can finally believe the run on VHS, it will be with board of acquisition.

I use 3 compressors ( capture/encodage/Divx ) and finally, i have approximatively 1min = 3.6 MB, so total will be under 1.2 GB. I don't understand how my board of acquisition did a time a .avi file 2s = 175 MB and sometimes i had other something like this...

I use Megaupload ( it's a free upload service who accept 500 MB max per files, and sometimes download speed can be very good ! ) and post the links of the parts here, then Radix download it and put it on sda. It is simple and by the way, every can verifiate if the run is correct, i saw it, there aren't "strange way" or something which could prove i'm a cheater.

Oh, and i finished the first part today, i use the sames segments than my first run on VHS, so the first segment is "Nintendo" -) Prison of the castle of Spikey Tigger, the real time played is 29Min00s-29Min01s ( the old time on VHS was in fact 29Min55s-30Min00s lol ), size is 136 MB.
Do you will download it ( for to put it later on sda ), Radix ? I need you verifiate it ^^.

A last thing, when you see pratically all the runs of sda with wmp for example, you have a little black part on each size ( up and down ) of the movie, with me, you have a bigger black part on the up and no black part on the down... but you have all the movie, she's just decaled up-)down, i didn't find the way how to remediate it, but i think it will be easy for sda ^^. As for as i'm concerned, it isn't bad to watch ^^.
In fact, the movie encoded with Pinnacle is like the others movies of sda, but after i use divx i have this thing.

The service is crap ... When it worked I got 15 k/s. But then I had to cancel the download and try again later and it didn't work at all. When you're done you can upload files to my ftp like everyone else, or you can seed a bittorrent if you want others to see it early.

I can tell just by the file extension on the upload site that you didn't do anything right. Have you seen anything else on this site with a ".div" extension? You should be using VirtualDub.

I can tell just by the file extension on the upload site that you didn't do anything right. Have you seen anything else on this site with a ".div" extension? You should be using VirtualDub.

Why dont you just send the tapes to Nate and let him worry about the capturing part? He didnt buy a $300+ VCR for capturing tapes for nothing.

I didn't know i used it 4-5 times and at each times i downloaded at 60KB/s and thought it could be better but it's me who couldn't be faster.
But i just verified, you're right i had 12 KB/s.
I took it because max size is 500 MB, i didn't know the others times i just had luck.

You can always rename ".divx" ( i don't know why it says .DIV and not .DIVX ) at "avi", the twice work on WM9 and divx.
When i finally found a way to compress it with a regular size i was so happy and i had immediatly up it on megaupload.

Yes after the matters with VHS i read the full FAQ of Nate but VirtualDub doesn't work with my vids, it says there are desyncs matters ( it isn't an emulated movie lol ).

Actually, for me, full quality ( after recompress it a first time with Pinnacle if not 0.001s=46829843 GB ) is 1H=1.5 GB ( first segment 30Min29s=748 MB ), so it's about the same thing like the full quality FF6 run ( i saw 5H26=10.4 GB ).
I let the segments just for the info, and perharps i will find a better upload service, but of course it isn't priority.

I didn't know i used it 4-5 times and at each times i downloaded at 60KB/s and thought it could be better but it's me who couldn't be faster.

Secret of Mana

Hello !
Well, 90% of the run is done ( hey idiot why do you post ? And it's the third time poor asshole ! Arg you will see why ) , Pureland is finished ( lol you will see the precision and the luck i have in Pureland ! It's because it's not single-segment ). I just say current time is under 4h30, i will give precise time after Mana Beast because i have really no idea for the time of the end of the game, so no speculations lol.

Finally, the last part is the hardest : i need a huge luck against the last boss, it's the same thing like Spikey Tigger, but with the Mana Beast you need do before each attempt Mana Forteress ( there are Shadow training+the 3 longs fights against the 3 firsts boss of Mana Forteress ) and the magic training of Purim actually i have 6 parts but i think i will do an other part for the training lol, finally there will be 8 part+credits.
In fact because it's very long when i'm too busy i do attempt of encoding, and i did a ton of new attempts, and finally 1 min HQ 25 fps = 8.6 MB ( i give here a little more for you haven't bad mistake with final size) so 1 min 50 fps ( it's pal ) = 17.2 MB ??
So 1 H = 60*17.2=1032 MB ( better than the old 1H=1.5 GB ).
Oh and because i thougt nobody could download the first part with megaupload, i redid the run ( i did only the first part before it) and improved it by a few seconds, by the way i could start new attempts of record ( in fact i found a better way for full quality just compressed for the first time with Pinnacle capture ).

I post because :
I did a mini trailer of the run ( 30s=4.13 MB ) for quality verification, finally, i remove the matter of black part but the only time i can do this all the video is framed ( only with full screen ) like a table, but i think it will be easier to correct it if it's always considered wrong.

I use RapidShare and all the time i used it ( without Premium account ) i had my max 60 KB/s. I didn't use the last time because max files is 50MB. Remenber you can't use it 2 times under 1 H so if you used it recently you can't download my mini-trailer.

Radix, is the quality/size ok ? It's the 1/2 speed of full quality ( 25 fps ).
I can a better quality 25/50 fps but obviously with bigger size, but difference begin to be unimportant after a better quality than the trailer.

Actually i can't do 50 fps, Virtual Dub doesn't work, i must find the way ( anacro ( in fact it was anacro and not desync lol ) matters grrrr !!! )...

For the others who wait the final run, i put volontary 4 parts of my speed run :
1-How to kill the first boss without any damages.
2-How to kill the 2 werewolfs when you meet Purim, with this trick you can have 0 damages.
3-How to kill Biting Lizard, apparently some people like Krabbe have matter with it but it's easy to put it under control like the first boss, he jumps like a silly.
4-How to kill Kilroy, hey in fact if you are careful your sword is longer than his hammers, even if he does his "spinning top" lol but it's very hard and in the run i take lots of damages because it's just theoric, emulator is indispensable for 0 damages.

I didn't put Spikey Tiger, i kill it with 88 HP, but i just wait to have luck, because it's the begin of the second part, the video is wrong for 99% of the time lol, there are no tricks for this boss, except i have the feeling if you go down of the room after hit the boss with bow after he goes on ones of the 2 plate-formes he comes back ! Obivously you need always luck for he does it, but i have the feeling he comes back easier by this way ?

You simply compressed an interlaced video... that's not good. Look at frame 39 to see how you can see two of the mantis ant.

There are very complicated directions in the FAQ (tech support forum) for how to deinterlace stuff.

You'll end up with a 704x588 video at 50fps which you can use for high quality, then you resize and cut the framerate to 352x276 @ 25 fps to get normal quality.

Secret of Mana

PART 1 : the run
Run is finished Wink

-Final Time ( goal ) : 5H27

-Finals levels :
Randi level 45
Purim level 40
Popoie level 45

PAL ( French ) - Played alone - 8 Segments+credits

One more time it's approximative ( you haven't the seconds ), i must cut all useless parts of attempts but it's under 5H30, my objective is ok : my goal was under 5h30 without any bugs Wink

And finally you can kill the Mana Beast with low levels like in my run but not like the FAQ says ( it's always false ), the combo doesn't work, my final strat is to do Luna/Dryad Level 4 of Purim and Dryad Level 4 of Popoie on Randi, then i do hit charged at level 1, it gives more than 300 damages with critical hit ( the FAQ says you do 999 damages each times without you charge the sword and don't precise level of Luna/Dryad lol ).

Lol and now i discovered new strats but it's the sorts of little things which save just a few seconds but i discovered lots of it. And an other friend after saw my run had ideas but in fact 90% of them are useless, you know i use the wall ( i run on it etc... ) and sometimes you will see Randi who exceeds the wall before to change directly his direction, but in fact it's a matter of the game sometimes you have very transparents blocks ( i call them it ), you know sometimes you don't understand why you are blocked just on a corner of the wall even if you are running, i know their locations that's all.

You have an other very particular bug : take your secret of mana, start a new game, then kill Mantis Ant. On the way to the Water Palace, you will see a bridge and there is often a flower beside it. Well after the bridge run on the up/right and Randi will run an instant then he will stop by himself, the strange thing is he hasn't the number 0%-)100% he can run a new time just after it lol.

Ok now i will tell you the very bad bug in secret of mana : you know if you kill a boss and while the scene of the destruction if you use a nuts on the sprite, you lose the nuts : it says you use an items but the sprite don't take 50 MP lol ! OK it doesn't seem a matter. In fact, yes : when you are fighting the 3 BitingLizards at the Ice Palace just before the fight with Giga Frost, well when one them dies you can have the same bug. But there aren't animation and sometimes you have the bug, sometimes you haven't it but in speed run when you are always spamming everything with magic and just after that use a nuts you have this bug 70% of the time !! If you see one of the BitingLizards slept ( just before he dies ), even if you wait he begins to disappears for to use the nuts, you can have this bug !!!

That's why the third segment begins just before the Ice Palace.

After all of that, yes, the way of the run isn't perfect ( i don't say it's crap i just say it isn't the quality of an emulated movie ) because it's random with random start position of the monsters of the maps and also just because i'm a humain and not an emulator so obviously i had mistake, it can't be perfect. However, perharps i'm wrong, but i found the RPG-action are hard to speed run lol, but i don't have exp in speed run, i just can say for secret of mana the real difficulty is you must keep in life the sprite, for example when you meet the 2 werewolfs with Purim, when you know good this game they aren't a matter but if the sprite doesn't have to die it's an other story, arg i must do this trick you saw in my mini-trailer but i had luck because they aren't a good random start, they run on me in the same time, if not, i can restart the run lol.

PART2 : the settings

OK it's for you Radix, before all of that don't think i am lazy, seriously, i saw your FAQ more than one time and it will be really easy if i just read the FAQ and do it says.

Finally i think i found the matters, it's the full movie with Pinnacle ( non compressed ).
When you open it with wmp for example, the speeds changes, you have 2fps then 40 fps it's very strange lol.
There are only Pinnacle and VirtualDub who can open it.
After all my attempts with the output video files of Pinnacle when i try to encode it with VirtualDub it always put an message error or when i can to try an output avi files with your settings, it create each time an 10.0KB files.
I re-install VirtualDub but it's the same thing, my HDD is correct ( he's new and i have a pc just for secret of mana actually on the HDD there are only OS ( XP HOME no-hacked it couldn't be easier ) and Pinnacle and all program-codec of Nate's list.
I can always do better quality/size with Divx Converter ( High Def ) but i can't do 50 fps, i did all Nate ask.
So i can't do HQ run with Secret of Mana i can do a good quality ( better than the mini trailer ) but not 50 fps.
In fact when i try to capture directly with Divx it always put an message error when i wanted to do the output files with differents quality, so after all i use capture compressor of Pinnacle just because i thought after all it was a better thing, size recorded is bigger so i can do after that the divx differents qualitys but finally it doesn't work, i think the next time i must perharps install Divx before Pinnacle then it would better like that lol but i think the final matter is i put too codecs on my PC ( i had fear i couldn't have all that i needs ).

Just an other question Radix : you asked me for HQ 704*588 but in the faq it's 704*576 ? It's for the matters of the black part ? Virtual Dub doesn't want 588, he wants between 4-576 ( for final fivx compression output ).
Other thing : when you told me about the frame 39 you just said it was too bad for normal quality ? It wasn't HQ. You said you saw 2 Mantis Ant like Randi seemed to have 2 sword on this same frame ? When i try to do 50 fps ( or a file faster than 25 fps ) speed is very irregular, you have 5 then 50 then 10 fps when you watch the vid ( for example ), but if my PC/HDD are news and it works with the others it's Pinnacle capture which is wrong.

So here is my conclusion : you don't will accept my run, however, i can always put it on others servers who will accept ( it's already ok ) the format like the mini trailer just because they think it if watchable ( like the mini-trailer for example ) it's good . After Pinnacle compressor i use MPEG2 4000KB/s 25fps 720*576 ( i can't do 704*588 ) then i use Divx Converter High Def, for the run which will be hosted with a smaller quality with 1H 25fps = 250-300 MB.
Before to decide that i try lots of last attempts for your settings but VirtualDub doesn't want cooperate.

HOWEVER because i promised you to do a nice run ( very HQ quality like Radix loves ^^ i saw a run under 15 min=near 500 MB ?? ^^) for 07/08 2005 i am allright in the good time, i will retry to encode capture directly with Divx before to compress with it, then it will be for me easy if i just like the FAQ and it works, before that a friend will lend me other things, i have luck...
So i will do a new som run for sda ^^ I will all restart at the begin ( for the HDD ). But i am also encoding the other full run for other server lol i am encoding the second part ( segment 2 ) it takes times because finally i must compress 3 times 5h30 lol.

I had also S-Video Cable but quality on my tv was too bad ( because it's SECAM ?? ) so i couldn't play i just put a "yellow/yellow" cable lol for output video.

PAL ( French ) - Played alone - 8 Segments+credits

One more time it's approximative ( you haven't the seconds ), i must cut all useless parts of attempts but it's under 5H30, my objective is ok : my goal was under 5h30 without any bugs  ;)

And finally you can kill the Mana Beast with low levels like in my run but not like the FAQ says ( it's always false ), the combo doesn't work, my final strat is to do Luna/Dryad Level 4 of Purim and Dryad Level 4 of Popoie on Randi, then i do hit charged at level 1, it gives more than 300 damages with critical hit ( the FAQ says you do 999 damages each times without you charge the sword and don't precise level of Luna/Dryad lol ).

Lol and now i discovered new strats but it's the sorts of little things which save just a few seconds but i discovered lots of it. And an other friend after saw my run had ideas but in fact 90% of them are useless, you know i use the wall ( i run on it etc... ) and sometimes you will see Randi who exceeds the wall before to change directly his direction, but in fact it's a matter of the game sometimes you have very transparents blocks ( i call them it ), you know sometimes you don't understand why you are blocked just on a corner of the wall even if you are running, i know their locations that's all.

You have an other very particular bug : take your secret of mana, start a new game, then kill Mantis Ant. On the way to the Water Palace, you will see a bridge and there is often a flower beside it. Well after the bridge run on the up/right and Randi will run an instant then he will stop by himself, the strange thing is he hasn't the number 0%-)100% he can run a new time just after it lol.

Ok now i will tell you the very bad bug in secret of mana : you know if you kill a boss and while the scene of the destruction if you use a nuts on the sprite, you lose the nuts : it says you use an items but the sprite don't take 50 MP lol ! OK it doesn't seem a matter. In fact, yes : when you are fighting the 3 BitingLizards at the Ice Palace just before the fight with Giga Frost, well when one them dies you can have the same bug. But there aren't animation and sometimes you have the bug, sometimes you haven't it but in speed run when you are always spamming everything with magic and just after that use a nuts you have this bug 70% of the time !! If you see one of the BitingLizards slept ( just before he dies ), even if you wait he begins to disappears for to use the nuts, you can have this bug !!!

That's why the third segment begins just before the Ice Palace.

After all of that, yes, the way of the run isn't perfect ( i don't say it's crap i just say it isn't the quality of an emulated movie  ) because it's random with random start position of the monsters of the maps and also just because i'm a humain and not an emulator so obviously i had mistake, it can't be perfect. However, perharps i'm wrong, but i found the RPG-action are hard to speed run lol, but i don't have exp in speed run, i just can say for secret of mana the real difficulty is you must keep in life the sprite, for example when you meet the 2 werewolfs with Purim, when you know good this game they aren't a matter but if the sprite doesn't have to die it's an other story, arg i must do this trick you saw in my mini-trailer but i had luck because they aren't a good random start, they run on me in the same time, if not, i can restart the run lol.

PART2 : the settings

OK it's for you Radix, before all of that don't think i am lazy, seriously, i saw your FAQ more than one time and it will be really easy if i just read the FAQ and do it says.

Finally i think i found the matters, it's the full movie with Pinnacle ( non compressed ).
When you open it with wmp for example, the speeds changes, you have 2fps then 40 fps it's very strange lol.
There are only Pinnacle and VirtualDub who can open it.
After all my attempts with the output video files of Pinnacle when i try to encode it with VirtualDub it always put an message error or when i can to try an output avi files with your settings, it create each time an 10.0KB files.
I re-install VirtualDub but it's the same thing, my HDD is correct ( he's new and i have a pc just for secret of mana actually on the HDD there are only OS ( XP HOME no-hacked it couldn't be easier ) and Pinnacle and all program-codec of Nate's list.
I can always do better quality/size with Divx Converter ( High Def ) but i can't do 50 fps, i did all Nate ask.

In fact when i try to capture directly with Divx it always put an message error when i wanted to do the output files with differents quality, so after all i use capture compressor of Pinnacle just because i thought after all it was a better thing, size recorded is bigger so i can do after that the divx differents qualitys but finally it doesn't work, i think the next time i must perharps install Divx before Pinnacle then it would better like that lol but i think the final matter is i put too codecs on my PC ( i had fear i couldn't have all that i needs ).

Just an other question Radix : you asked me for HQ 704*588 but in the faq it's 704*576 ? It's for the matters of the black part ? Virtual Dub doesn't want 588, he wants between 4-576 ( for final fivx compression output ).
Other thing : when you told me about the frame 39 you just said it was too bad for normal quality ? It wasn't HQ. You said you saw 2 Mantis Ant like Randi seemed to have 2 sword on this same frame ? Don't use the divx converter. Don't use Pinnacle. Don't use Adobe.

Just follow the faq and read the stuff about deinterlacing using avisynth/vdub. If something is going wrong then you are doing something wrong.

And yes the resolution should be 576 lines not 588. It's 288 for the half-size normal quality and I just got the numbers mixed up.

Don't use the divx converter. Don't use Pinnacle. Don't use Adobe.

Secret of Mana

Ok, the new run is done, i just killed the Mana Beast :party:

For the old run i couldn't make a decent quality/size because initial format was too hard too understand for virtualdub ( i am the responsable obviously ).

I don't tell the new time ( a little more than 5 hours ) because it's really too approx, Nate will give a precise time. Obviously it's better than the other run, i found new tricks.

It's always PAL ( French ) - Played Alone - 8 Segments+Credits

Finally, i choiced VHS, because now it isn't possible with my computer ( now it's hardware matter ).

I choiced VHS 3 Hours EHQ, sorry, but i searched in lots of shops, and you don't have 2 Hours EHQ, you have 2 Hours HQ and 3 hours EHQ. But in fact it seems to be the same quality, 2 hours is more stronger and more harder to broke and you can do less records on the 2+ Hours but the first time you record it's the same quality.
I know it because it's the same quality than the HQ runs on sda.

Now i will ask Nate's adress to Radix.

Tomorrow i will see what international enterprise i will choice for to send the run ;), someone has something to recommand me Huh?

-It can be interresting to see the first segment when i play just with Randi, after that i have always the three chars and the "select" strats.
-The worst part of the run is the castle of the emperor ( just before you have the dragon ), because in the first part of it, you haven't ennemis, and it always deconcerted me, a dungeon without ennemies, even if have the full dungeon in my head, i do always stupids mistake, they don't took lots of time but there are pathetics.
-The hardest training is before the Ice Palace.
-With the dragon sometimes i prefered did rectangular way than diagonal way, it's more sure ( i want always do perfect way with diagonal way and each time i miss the destination ) and it cost only 1-2s and i did it only 1-2 time ( don't remenber, the other time i do these diagonal ways ).
-Tree Palace can be interresting to watch, it's a good FAQ for the guys who don't know the game and are blocked in this palace Wink

-Pureland, if you remove the boss, i do the start-)Mana Tree in 1-2 min, because all the rooms are small, so the monsters have less random position even if they are very strong, and if you learn the full dungeon with all the wall which you run on them + all the start positions of the monster-) Smiley

Pureland is the best part of the run ( the hardest in fact ), i never could think that of the nightmare of my chilhood.
-Mana Forteress, hum very nice to watch a speed run with this music ( that's i think ) Wink

): i was in the ruins #2, just after i entered in a room, the Sprite did by himself the animation like when he opens a chest but there weren't any chest ( and i didn't hit any monster, and i was in a room with monsters and not in one of the rooms with "chest orb" ) ! Then the game told me "you get sword orb" lol...
Don't worry, it changes anything of the run, just because i see the "orb maker" ( i don't know his US name ) only at the end of the game, and before that the Mana Tree give me max sword orb.
In fact, it took me time ( time of the animation ).

I had an other big bug, always in the run ;), while the fight with the 3 boss at the palace, one of them ( with the first form ) begins to fly in the sky and sometime i can't hit this bastard ( but i can while this time to hit the others so it doesn't cost really time )!! I'm looking forward to see this run. Always was interested in a perfect play of Secret of Mana since it is one of the few great classics I don't have much experience with. This will also be a good inspiration for us to make a tool assisted timeattack because we can learn some tricks in this movie to save time.

I think a TAS with Secret of Mana will be hard, because you must each time do the perfect way for 3 chars in the same time Tongue

For to send VHS i must before write my author's comments, i did a little general comment, don't want spoil and i have a sad english so...
The local service postal doesn't seem sure, i will see other services.

Oh i believe the last thing, just because i have always this matter :-X, i said already it but i believe to say it a new time ( because now i have the practice ) : yes the run is good quality ( for VHS ), there are no matter like the other time where i believe to save my game, but i have always the same matter at the very beginning of the game, you have a screen matter when the fat guy hit me for the first time and when i touch the seed at the first time in the Water Palace. But you can see there aren't missing part ( like a black screen or snow ), it happened at the very beginning of the run while these 2 cutscenes very far from "critical situations" ( you don't need a good experience of the game for to know it ) and each time it took less 1 s, i saw a Run of Castlevania 7 Min with 3 bad Min so i think a 5 H run with less 2 bad s will be accepted, because like this Castlevania run you can see my run is OK like i edited my topic's title ::).

But the thing which is strange, it's the rest of the run, all is fine, even if you have other cutscenes with seeds of the others palace and there aren't any matters Huh?

I have ALWAYS this matter ( Nate can see it : when he plays my first VHS, he can press Rewind for to see my other attempts and see there are always it, perfectly in the same 0.0001s ), so i think i haven't solutions for to remove it, but it was the only way to send a run this year to sda. In 2 years, i will have the time to do it with other Video Tape Recorder and with NTSc and 2 others players, until this time nothing Roll Eyes

Edit :  i believe menbers of sda will verified the run after Nate put it on web and before it's in the game list so it's good, you will see there isn't legal matter ;)

Edit 2 : i found the solution, i will buy an output analog for my Video Tape Recorder ( actually he can do only input ) , then i capture the matter, you will see  ;)

I just replayed this game last week and had the stupid Fairy Walnut bug happen to me, sigh 1000 gold down the drain =(

I could easily verify this run, everything is fresh in my head and if I saw something questionable I have 3 saves pretty dispursed through the game, so i could do ingame checks if that's required.

I'm not doing any runs currently. I need a break after the SOE run which took me much time and nerves to complete.

I'm thinking of a platform game to timeattack next, but can't say which one I pick for now.

While this time I am finally adding other things in my author's comment.

Now i am relaxed, i believe to tell you a trick : do you know, if for example, you are spamming a boss, then this boss interrompt you and do a spell on the Sprite, you wait the animation is finished, then the Sprite doesn't move a moment, then he does his animation ( jump for example ) when he take the damage with red number. Just before he jumps, restart the spam lol Smiley

But that's dangerous, sometime you think you had the good timing and the Sprite dies after he did his spell Sad

An important ask, i will soon move in a room student 7d/7 and without internet : want someone to improve my run with PAL/NTSC ? Or just planning ? I know you didn't see my run, but has someone just this idea ?
A 4H run will be great with NTSC Wink
