If the topic is bumped anyway, I tested a bit with the weapon glitch.

It is only possible with a second controller activated. As soon as the second player presses start to unplug his controller, the glitch fades and the correct charge is released (in our example 1).

I tested it with my TAS WIP right after defeating tiger. I levelled my weapons at neko's home, after that the levels were 6/4/6. A full axe charge at that level does 420 damage vs a flower, that's not enough to one shot bosses, and it would only be enough to skip the second form of tonpole if it crits. Anyway, the time to charge such a blast would save a ton of time in the long run, not to mention the time saved levelling the spirits.

Additional thoughts:
- Could enchanted weapons further boost that damage?
- Could you alternate glitch between two players?
- Can you really get through the game without magic? I remember the chicken bosses and the vampire bosses to be really nasty to hit...
Secret of Mana
I counted 25 segments for a good segmented run.
I loosed my txt works, but i'm retaping :
-Low Level FAQ
-Segmented Run FAQ with description of these 25
-Single Segment Speed Run FAQ
Without any glitch.

SomFE you are now in my msn too ( like you put me ) perharps i'll have the time this week-end. I'm french too so MSN will be nice for to speak about this speed run ^^

Gorash i'm glad to see you're aways working on the TAS.
- Could enchanted weapons further boost that damage?
-) Yes when you are against Giga Frost, he does "snow sword" on you, and with that you can't really hit it.

- Can you really get through the game without magic? I remember the chicken bosses and the vampire bosses to be really nasty to hit...
-) There are the orbs.
I don't which will happen with Mana Beast.

There are hard boss to hit by the physical way : Vampire#1 has many HP but can take damage, Blue Spike has less HP but is really harder to hit.
There are lots of boss like that. For example the second chicken ( Pureland ) is hard.

Well when i have the time i continue my little fast walktrough.
I don't know for Sun2008, may be a new try of Single Segment NTSC. It just depends of my life. I'll just wait successives luck for one run, i have better skill now, i would have to wait luck  Angry

I'll use my new archos  Wink I if can already record film, i'll record this game. Yeah don't put too attention in that, i had already too many matters with that  Angry

A single segment will be never sure fore me, but for a segmented NTSC no-glitch, with many segments, i'll see later after see others would have done or would be making.

SomFE are you running on French PAL version like i did ? Or NTSC ?
Are you planing glitch or not ?

Madzombie and Fulgore after retaping my FAQ in futur time, i will be a better adviser.
Be sure i have ideas but i actually i don't have all the time i want  Tongue

Just note i'm not a good adviser for glichted run because i will never do that, however, i will pehraps have a few advises, and later, perharps my fast walkhrough will help you for fighting boss + glitch.
For my smv i'm fighting Blue Spike, i stopped at 2h00m00s.
I did a short magical training before this boss.
I'm starting serious magic spam with the boss now, the last no serious was the first slime.
Tree Palace will be the longest to plan for my smv, with Ratio Luna Magic training, i don't have any idea of i can do with emulator for Luna - Magic Steal.

Well as for glitched run, I am thinking about giving my WIP a few hours to see how it would go. The thing is, I definitely don't have enough time to play 20 hours into the game to test a specific skill setup.

My question is more like:
Is there any boss in the game that is completely impossible to hit with physical weapons like the ghosts on winter isle or in the vulcan are?

Even if your smv doesn't use glitches, I'd very like to see it completed so that one can fast forward to a scene and start testing there.
Existence as you know it is over
I would like to see this run. My suitemate's a big fan of this game and recently got me interested in it too.

Tested a bit more.
To get the maximum weapon exp, you need to kill monsters that are close to your level.

Also the glitch gets stronger fast.

When executed at lv9 even 2 charges of the glitched weapon one shot tonpole. Heck, even 5-6 charges of the flashing do that.

It seems that internally the maximum level overflows and gets set to something way over 8. During the symbol flash alone there seem to be the first 8 level in strength, and after that another 8.

I know I'm probably the 4th or 5th person here to say this, but I'm also planning on giving this run a go. I've played this game a lot during my child hood ever since my dad bought it (I think since I was 7) and I've played it constantly ever since. If I run this I plan on doing something around 16 or so segments on the NTSC version, single player. I'm not certain as I haven't played multiplayer on this game for years, but multiplayer may not be the best option for a game like this unless you specifically want the extra category. Here's a few things that will probably slow you down:

1) Running direction
If you're planning on multi with another person (or persons) they will also have to run in the same direction as you at all times, and if it's 3 players it will probably give you a hard time in the fact you'll need 2 players who have a really good idea what you're doing, where you're going, are you running across or diagonal, etc.

2) Running stamina
(unless I'm mistaken) whenever a human player runs it will cost them their stamina, this will matter since it will affect all other human players running as well. Single player would help here since the AI running costs them nothing (and even though they're completely retarded they will run in the same direction as you automatically, which can help with number 1 up there).

3) Magic spamming
(again, unless I'm mistaken) if a human player is playing the sprite, after he casts a spell you can't access his menu until he's completely finished with it, which would really hinder the effect of the magic spamage. Unless you mean to cancel 3rd player off for boss battles that require it (which is a lot) this would make it a route you may not want to go.

4) Basic dealing with other players
Instead of just you needing to know exactly what you're going to do, you'll have 2 others that will be messing with the menus and what not. This isn't really just for SoM, but just something to keep in mind.

The only things I can really see beneficial to multiplayer here is for fights early on that don't require magic, and helping the short bus kids from getting stuck on trees and crap (I seriously hope your friends are smarter than the game's AI :P)

Like I've said, I haven't played multiplayer in about 5+ years so I may not know what the hell I'm talking about there, but I'd figure I'd give my advice anyways. Anywho, I plan on watching Seiken's run and writing down what he did for bosses, his routes, his leveling up strategies, etc. And see if I can find anything to improve along the way. I don't have the game anymore, or even a SNES for that matter, but my friend does so I'll see if he'll let me borrow it for a while. Until then I'll probably start practicing up on the good ol' emulator.

And Seiken, two other things, when you're finished with the tool assisted walk through can you send it to my e-mail? Along with the information on emulator, which rom version/language you used, all that good jazz? I know this has also probably been said a hundred times but, I've watched bits and pieces of your run (segment 1 & 2), the beginnings look really good but near the end it begins to look pretty sloppy, if you segment the crap out of it the run would probably look fantastic.

Ok I'm done writing my novel of text now, I'll keep you posted if anything happens or if I find out anything.

E-Mail: Zhegan2005@yahoo.com (if you send the file can you send me a PM so I know you sent it? Incase yahoo craps out for whatever reason? Thanks)

Secret of Mana
Hi Zhegan.

I stopped my fast walkhrought ( not TAS ), because i lost a part of my smv ant it was a part with a ton of re-record.
For to play a smv, you need the good rom ( the emulator will tell you ) and the good emulator, which is available on the great bisqwit site.

I have a life now, i do no longer speed run but i remain an occasionaly watcher.
To do a new Secret of Mana SS is impossible for me, because you need to be a no life, and i have studies+girlfriend+ lots of sports ------) i wanted to change my life ( i was no life ) and i succeeded.

Listen me :
My run took me effort and it can be improved, but for me Secret of Mana is ultra-hard to speed run, it's even for me one of the hardest game to speed run, because of two things :

- 3 chars to play at the same time, the 2 you don't play can easily kill your attempt.
- a fucking random luck part, there are lots of moments which just need luck.

At the begin, i wanted to do a SS, then Segmented Run with min number of Segment. My run is 8 segments and i knew i could do faster with more segments since before i started the speed run, but for me, it was more entairning to do a speed run with min number of segments. Because at the begin i wanted one segment, then i saw 8 or 7 was the min for me  Shocked

If you do 15-20-25 segments yes you will do something really faster than my run but for me a run with 2minutes segments is not impressive ( except for FPS game ).
I counted 25 segments before, but i realize that's not so cool.

You can think : if the run is in cat segmented, why not to do the max of segments, but that wasn't my situation. My situation was : SS impossible, so now : minimum of segments.

Do a great SS Secret of Mana Speed Run and you will be a god, you'll see.
There isn't only the skill which is impressive to look in a speed run, the luck is impressive to watch too.

However, if you have a life, stop now. When i started a Single Segment NTSC Speed Run, i saw it was a question of time, to have the skill then wait the luck like all others games, but when i saw for true the real quantity needed, i stopped.

There is already a 8 segments run, and the only segmented run which could impress me would be a faster 8 segments run.

If you can, go for the SS.
If not, try do a minimum segmented run like me, if not, do a segmented run with the max of segments for the fastest time possible, but don't make an intermediaire quantity of segments speed run.
That's i recommand, but you decide of course.
If you have question, i'll help you.

And for your questions already posted :
-)It's faster to play alone
-)Read the full thread Wink

Hi to the others, and Gorash, i wish you good luck if you're always working on this game Wink
[Insert text here]
I skimmed through the thread, reading some of it. if I plan to go along with this (which is pretty likely) I will read all of the text and collect all of the information I can get (I will probably look into the low level guide as well). I haven't produced a speed run in over a year, so I feel it's about time I took on another project, and I figured I'd run my favorite game of all time. Don't worry about the no life thing I have no girlfriend, I work only 4 days out of the week during the mornings, and I don't really have anywhere else I need to go until school. I don't really have much money so this project will probably help with that (I have a pretty uneventful summer ahead of me, so this will probably take care of that).

Unless I'm mistaken you said you had some changes planned to your run while you were planning out an improvement, could you post your ideas here if your done with this game? Or if you already mentioned them just tell me (it IS up to 13 pages after all).

I'm probably not going to do a Single Segment run, but after I attempt the Segmented run, who knows. Although it'll more than likely have more segments then yours did, I won't be having 5 minute segments since I don't really care to watch 40+ segment runs anyways. I'd figure an average time per segment will probably be about 20 minute or so. My cousin is visiting for the week so I won't be able to start anything really till Monday, but I'll keep you posted. (Still need a SNES and the game anyways).

sweet, this should help me a lot in the planning stages. I plan on doing this non-glitched but it should help none the less.

I've called my friend and he agreed to let me borrow his SNES and the game for a while, and I'll be getting my parent's VCR today. I don't have that much planned for the run as of yet, just a few maps I drew with photoshop and emulator screenshots. So needless to say I've gotta lot of work to do (which is perfect since my summer is so friggen boring).

EDIT: Well, I won't write it in stone whether or not it'll be glitched or not yet, I want to see how bad this glitch really is first.
[Insert text here]
Ok, I've watched part of Fulgore's TAS with the weapons glitch. After some thought and discussion on IRC, I believe I may make this a glitched run after all considering it probably won't toss it into a different category. It's easy to see that making this a glitched run will not only save oodles of time, but it will make bosses 3 and 4 a lot less of a pain in the ass (and a LOT faster in comparison to normal attacking).

I will most likely make a new topic as soon as I actually get something done, with practice vids and drawn out run paths (using emulator screens and Photoshop) for critiquing. I still have a lot of research to do (as well as finishing watching both Seiken's run and Fulgore's TAS), but I will mostly base the run off of Fulgore's strategy in his TAS. Still haven't gotten my friend's SNES yet, hopefully Saturday I can start practicing on the real hardware. I'll keep you guys posted if anything happens.

And sorry for the double post.
Existence as you know it is over
Yes I would like to see a glitched run, choosing not to use glitches is TG's domain.
Is there any current progress on a SOM run glitched or non glitched?

None here really. Do to work and school I don't have much time to work on a SoM speedrun, though I'd hopefully like to complete one sometime in the future.
I have a question about the difference in speed between NTSC and PAL games. I have searched the forum and google and the basic impression I got was that PAL games run 5/6 slower than NTSC games. Does that mean to convert a PAL time over to a NTSC you simply multiply it by 5/6 or am I missing something. This may not be in the right place to ask this question, but I am trying to compare to Seiken's SOM run and since it is PAL and I am working from a NTSC console I want to make sure my timing is accurate.
I want off the ride....
basically yes 5/6th thing works. but please note sometimes this can be slightly off; as its not a FULL 5/6th its like 49.97/59.97 or something like that; Soo if your looking to be seiken's time you should get a pretty low time...

If I can figure out how to properly pull off the Weapons Charge Glitch, I'll gladly pick this back up.  I tried doing this a bit before, but dropped it again when the werewolves were kicking my ass beyond belief.

When I started this, I was using the "Skip Spear Glitch" (go to the Water Palace, talk to the soldiers 3x, then go back to Cannon Travel then go to Gaia), but given that you really need the spear for the WCG, I guess it isn't worth it anymore.

I've got something else I'm working on right now, but if I can make it work on the Wii, I'll go after this.  Some people say it doesn't because "it's a new version", but given that there was only one release of SoM in the USA, there should be no differences.  General Europe and France have Rev A copies, but not the USA, Japan, or Germany versions (and I don't have any reports of any undumped versions), but I'll have to test to see.

Otherwise, I'll have to try to dig up 2 SNES controllers from my controller pile.

I just tried that weapon charging glitch and ate up the Fire Giant... it works just fine; You just charge up a weapon with a higher level than another one you have. (In my case I used the SPEAR lvl 2, charged it up; Then swapped to glove and PWnt the fire giant with the UBER TECH). So it works on the wii
Fucking Weeaboo
I understood the basic concept, based upon watching the glitched TAS, but I wasn't sure if it worked on the Wii.  Thanks for the confirmation.  I can do it on there better since my SNES controllers suck, but I do have 2 classic controllers.
So, I have been researching this game for about three weeks now and I think I might attempt a run at this game. Seiken's run is impressive in that it is only 8 segments, but I would try a run with probably somewhere around 30 segments and take a lot more risks and shop a lot less. In testing this game I have come up with quite a bit of time savers up to fire gigas so far. I probably won't start working on it for a another few weeks, but I thought I would put this out there if anyone has come up with new time saving ideas since Seiken's run. Here are the ones I have found.

1. Killing rabites instead of Goblin Jrs. to get level 1 sword charge for Tropicallo, while still having atleast 150 when you enter the dwarf village
2. Skip treasure chest in Potos Elder's house
3. Cannon travel to dwarf village
4. No shopping in dwarf village
5. Faster tropicallo strategy
6. Much faster spikey tiger strategy
7. Talk to witch to get her to warp you instead of backtracking though castle
8. Level undine at Neko's shop near Water temple instead of in the fire temple (saves quite a bit) and then cannon travel back to dwarf village.
9. Having sprite survive every boss battle including Fire gigas gives her level 8 and thus 10 mp which allows for quicker leveling of gnome.

I am not sure about this, but in my tests I had close to 1000 gold after I got Undine, which means I could buy a faerie walnut from Neko and possible not level Undine at all, have to test this out.

Other minor things I have found.

That is where I am so far in planning...

In terms of segments I have:

1. Right after you talk with Luka (this might actually save time, because when you reload you start at the back of the temple)
2. Talk to neko after the Tropicallo fight
3. Talk to neko in Witch's castle after buying 4 candies
4. Talk to neko near Water Temple to recharge sprite mana.
5. Dwarf village, sprite Undine lvl.1, fire palace orb already opened

Let me know what you think.
Fucking Weeaboo
You're not gonna need a lot of shopping, including nuts, since you no longer need to magic spam.  You also really don't need to focus on weapon levels - just make sure you can get Sword to Lv 1 before Tropicallo, then Lv 2 afterwards ASAP, so you can do the WCG.

There's only a couple of battles where you even need to use magic at all, and that's mainly as a defensive mechanism, not an offensive one.

If you want to see a real strategy that is mostly doable on a console, watch the glitched TAS at TASVideos (in the Secret of Mana thread, it's not a published run).  Seiken's run should be obsoletable by at least 1.5 hrs, probably 2.
I wasn't really planning on using the weapon's glitch because I thought the run would then be characterized as a glitched run and be put in a separate category, plus I didn't really want to use it. But if it would not be put in a separate category then it would obviously have to be used.

I'm not sure if it would be or not as well, but it certainly could, given that it can obliterate most bosses in 1 hit.

I think we should ask staff for a ruling on this one, since there have been instances where severe glitches create a new category (Ocarina of Time's medallion skip, being one for instance).  Personally I would rather see them in separate categories.
I want off the ride....
are you also gonna bust out the stat up glitch where you save and it keeps the + through for a while? that could be helpful in destroying the game further to exploit for higher def n atk.

also if you kill ALL of the rabites from the sword to the village that's level 1 sword tech.

something to try since you should have the spear is if the glitch is accesible under the efforts of a lvl 1 n 0 weapon.
