Captain_Blue, it seems like you're trying too hard. Like Zurreco said, treat conversations in #sda as you would those in real life. Sit back, observe the crowd, and jump in if you have something valuable to add to the discussion. Don't chat just to chat and don't try to take over the channel.
I think the best way to gain others' trust/respect is to spend some time here on the forums first. Make a few intelligent posts (don't whine about irc so much), and you'll find people here will be willing to accept you. That's what I did. By the time I started going to irc, I already made a few friends through the forums. No lurking necessary.
Or you can prove your worth by beating one of the runs on this site.
