Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
I found a cool 100% timesaver in Top of the World. You know how you always have to wait for the moving platform when you're carrying the barrel? Well, I found that if you go around the room collecting the lums in a certain way, you can time it so that you get to the platform right before it leaves. This saves about four seconds.

I try to go fast

I have a hard time believing that noone but me has ever realized this. But since I always saw people doing it differently I figured I'd make a video Cheesy Saves 2 seconds.

I just saw that video on The Top of the World. Is that the same cycle you'd make if you just stood there and waited for the pad? Because if it is then it would be faster for Any% as well, wouldn't it? And you would be able to get additional lums ontop. Anyway cool find Smiley
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
It's one cycle after that, so it would be slower in any%.
I try to go fast
Yeah, I figured it would be. Would have been cool though.

I found this out a month or two ago when I was messing around. I just didn't think to mention it to anyone because of how obvious it was Tongue

I've been using that for forever as well, lol. As I said, I didn't think that could be new, really.
I've found a new way to clip, you need one plum and you need to be carrying something (I use plums for that aswell)

Unfortunately I can only think of two places where you can do that.

Echoing Caves: http://www.twitch.tv/frozen_frog/c/5785160 (very long video, I get 2 separate clips and walk underwater)
Sanctuary of Stone and Fire: http://www.twitch.tv/frozen_frog/c/5785171
Swim out of bounds in Fairy Glade 1:

Apparently this is not very well-known, but there's a secret key combination that you can use to gain a maximum size healthbar and refill your oxygen bar:

Nice! I know some areas are linked on PC that aren't linked on N64, so maybe this could be used to swim to the Echoing Caves loading zone. Can a PC player test it out?
Unfortunately there's a loading screen between the two levels, both on N64 and PC. (this was done on PC btw, I haven't successfully clipped on (emulated) N64 yet)

Hello and a happy new year to everyone Smiley

So Sobinist found that really nice easter-egg that gives us (basically infinite) health and air, so it saves time in Whale Bay and it makes the Orb-Skip less of an issue, since you can't die on it anymore.

However I'll have to open a can of worms because of that.
You can trigger the easter-egg during the opening cutscene, and it also fills your health-bar. So technically that is an input.
Would that mean that timing should start from pressing new game now? :/

I personally think that, given how small the R2 community is, we could just agree to not use the trick during the opening cutscene, given that it doesn't provide any advantage in earlier levels. So that we could still start the timer at -3:11. I think it would be really annoying and confusing if we started to time the game differently now.

What do you guys think? Should we be so strict to call it an input and start timing from new game? Or should we stick to the "tradition" of SDA-timing, so -3:11 from pressing new game?

Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
I don't think it should change the way timing is done. As you said, it has no real effect if it's done in the opening cutscene; it's pretty much impossible to run out of health in the first few levels of the run. And if it can be done in cutscenes, you could just do it in the cutscene after the sliding section to get the exact same effect. Plus, there are already inputs (changing the resolution and language) that we don't time.

Can it be done on N64? I'm not sure what the equivalent of the J key would be.

The R button for n64
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
Awesome. I wonder how many other easter eggs there are.
I try to go fast
Yeah, I totally agree with what Mano said. And yes it's the R button. It saves some amount of time in Whale Bay, since you can pretty much just swim in a straight line. It also makes it "impossible" game over while going for orb-skip.
Might be magic...
The "secret key combination" looks like a cheat left in the game by the developers. I'm guessing that a speedrun wouldn't be submittable to SDA if it uses this cheat - check with the admins for an authoritative answer.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I'll ask.
So today Sobinist found a wronggrab with which you can skip a big part of the Caves of Bad Dreams, but I caught it on camera (excuse me for the bad quality, I'm at the wrong computer):

You can also get into the tunnel: http://i.imgur.com/KRIiQgC.png
Also known as Bottles/Sydynski
So I did some testing and it seems PC runs are just about as fast as N64 runs. N64 runs may still be a bit faster cause of Echoing Caves skip but the new Orb skip for Cave of Bad Dreams saves close to 3 minutes if done quickly. Echoing Caves skip saves 2 minutes and the Water and Ice orb skip which is only feasible in an n64 run saves close to a minute. We should also note that you can skip the Bayou opening cutscene on pc which saves a little under a minute (57 seconds).

So in theory with near perfect execution of the new orb skip for PC, n64 runs will only be faster by 10 seconds? But another thing to look at is the load times for PC and since there is no lag on PC, speed runs on the PC version may be faster than N64. I'm just speculating here, let me know what you guys think.

Btw, I could not get that orb skip to work on n64. :/

Nice! I'll have to try that on N64. I'm not optimistic, though; these wrong grab tricks seem to work better on PC. No one could get the one in Sanctuary of Stone and Fire to work on N64.

As far as N64 vs. PC goes, I still think there are enough differences between them that they should be separate categories.
I try to go fast
I would prefer to still run on N64, given that I think I'd dislike the controls on PC. And also in terms of differences I would agree that the ports should be seperated. However, given how small the community is it would probably best if everyone just ran the fastest version (PS1 version aside)...
So today sobinist and I found how to do the echoing caves doorskip, with the help of a plum clip and an extended water plane.

We will upload how to clip there soon, it is risky to do though.
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
Cool! Hopefully that will make the skip easier for PC players.
Here is the full echoing caves door skip, but using a different method to swim above water:
