I was thinking of giving this game a go for a Speed Run on a new file at one time, but decided not to bother since my PlayStation 2 controller is a bit damaged.

In my test runs, I only bought one Weapon (the Devastator), so that could be useful for anyone who wishes to attempt a run like that.

Actually, if you can gather a lot of bolts along the way, you could get all the weapons (except the RYNO), all upgrades and gadgets, and still be able to buy all the infobots. That's what I did the first time I played (but i beat the game with less than 2,000 bolts left). So buying more weapons is not unreasonable, but certainly not all are needed.

The game should be speedrunned without memcard, that means from the start, without having all weapons, Skill points or Bolts. Thats a more demanding challenge. Because using the RYNO from the start means just blowing up whole levels without any skill factor. The endboss can be done in 10 sec with the RYNO. Sad

True, I would prefer a new run over an old, but the main factor is seeing how fast you can get from point a to point B, without having to get bolts and certain gadgets; that is where the RYNO comes in.

A new run over an old... That means you are able to have all weapons and all other stuff. But where is the challenge then? Blowing up everything and just run from A to B is nothing special, my little 5 year old cousin can do that.

Playing the game from the very start and the first time means you have to develop strategies, how fastest way to collect enough bolts to buy a good weapon, what weapon is good for what enemy and so on.
Using RYNO from the start means just pressing fire all the time without any sense. (imo)

Alrighty..i started speedrunning this awesome game.

Its really much better to start a new file, otherwise it would be boring.

First of all, the main problem are the bolts. One needs 3500 bolts for the first 3 planets just to get through. The first 2 weapons are useless, so these 5000 bolts are not needed. That means one can run through the level only collecting the bolts which are on the way.

There are also lots of ways to defeat enemies, im sure most times it is the best just to ignore them.

The most thing im concerned about is that i only have the PAL game. It seems very slow to me and i dont know if it is the same in NTSC.

So, any NTSCer who has R&C please tape a minute of the game that i can check the speed difference. If there is a difference i will buy the NTSC game.

I'm doing a challenge mode file but mine will be different as you cant just use the ryno to get all the gold bolts/skill points. Grin

I agree with you partly holy moly but watching someone go out of their way and collect bolts isnt that awfully exciting Tongue

but i kno what you're getting at. good luck to everyone i think all these runs should be exciting.

ok... finally got enough bolts to buy the ryno and health upgrades...again on a normal file without getting any gold bolts or skill points on the way through so i can beat drek start over and run through challenge mode getting all gold bolts and skill points. I will do this in segments but i don't have a specific time estimate yet. How are you progress wise on your run holy moly? because i dont think radix will accept a special run if a normal run hasn't been done yet. i will come with more updates about my segments in a few days.

well im triple posting.... if kno one answers this reply ill give up on this topic and complete the run without outside interest....

Any ways i am starting to record and am wondering how long i should make the semgents. I was thinking about making the first segment veldin, novalis, and metropolis. That for me is around 14 to 15 minutes at best. my route is as follows:

Veldin

Go straight through shoot ryno at enemies... plain ans simple

Novalis

go towards the plumber. get gold bolt in third room using wall jump to get up. use comet strike to get down faster. keep on using ryno. buy infobot from plumber.

jump off cliff, dont ride elevator. use ryno on enemies, jump across the river at point shoot ryno before you step into to clear area so it kills robots during cutscene. get infobot and ship. go to the elevator and while riding it shoot bomber planes with ryno to get skill point.

go through mushroom cave and get gold bolt, go back to ship, fly to metropolis.

Metropolis

Go towards helipack cut corners, use ryno, get helipack go up elevator jump backwards to get strike a pose skill point do helipack course again shoot blimp sometime during all of this to get another skill point.

get gold bolt by luggage.. get on train use heli boost and ryno. get infobot. buy ammo for ryno. kill qwarkbot for skill point. do the course get swingshot, go back, do the course up to the top of the second level and jump off and glide to the gold bolt. ride taxi back to ship. heli boost to the tunnel underneath the main section. get gold bolt. come back out behind ship

MGS for PS1 forever.

I'm interested in this run because it's the cousin of Jak and Daxter. IMO it's harder than Jak and Daxter as well. I bought it a few months ago and that game can kick yer ass over and over and over again. I finally got to the last stage...but I haven't the energy to get through the rest...since I've heard the last boss is insane anyway.

At first I thought the idea of having the RYNO would be a cakewalk and unworthy of running. But since you're getting the bolts and skill points I commend your efforts.

Since I've sold it I will probably start running R&C3, from scratch and getting the highest percentage possible without things like: buying best armour and getting all swamp crystals. That would be close to forever on speed-run terms!

If someone really kicked ass on this game I couldn't find it boring since there's always so much stuff going on. I will try to vary weopons for speed or if it is readily available to make it more exiting.

Would a high but not max percentage include all weopons in someone elses opinion?

(am i spelling weopons right?)

ill start work on R&C3 as soon as possible, but iv just started school so opportunity wont be huge.

I've decided that my run will include all platinum(?) bolts, trophys and skill points that dont take ages to get from a new game.

I believe from what i can tell that the Walloper could be faster... but that is my opinion

I thought you acquired the helipack long before the walloper, in the third world or so. Did you mean the jetpack?

The jet-pack should be much faster if you can get the rhythm right rather than randomly launching youself vertically. Be wary of stairs >_>
