Don't think!  feeeeeal
I'm interested in making a TASed NR on quake.  I was thinking of running the game at 1/2 to 1/3 speed with segments to show what's possible and possibly give inspiration for a new NR which I think is most needed of any quake run.

Is there anyone else interested in this?  I'd like to know all possible improvements even if it's just in theory.

Here's what I've got so far:

E1M1:
1. possibly get shotty boost from guy in lift
2. do barrel boost
E1M2:
1. possibly bhop so well as to jump into the silver key covey, then jump out using the imprinted symbol on the wall, or use wall for both directions.
2.  possibly use ogre grenade boost after door opens
E1M3:
1. do grenade boost off first zombie, and pick up extra med kits after friend smash if necessary
E1M4:
1. get yellow armor
2. grenade boost over water
3. grenade boost off knight up stairs
E1M5:
1. rocket boost after hitting switch, and pick up medkit before last door (could possibly get you an 0:08, but might slow you down)
E1M6:
1. same strat, better execution (could probably get a 19 or 18)

E2M1:
1. same strat (maybe crazy bunnies could get you a 0:06)
E2M2:
1. Ogre boost off knight to second level
2. Pick up nail gun (saves time on E2M4)
3. possibly get additional ogre boost in this level
4. Two bhops + shambler boost to jump out back of gold key to yellow armor (is this possible?)
5. grenade boost off knight to cross lift-gap
6. bhop up stairs and grenade boost off knight to finish all while keeping speed from first grenade boost
E2M3:
1. Lots of possiblities here with extra ogre grenade in lift, grenade boost off ogre, grenade boost off death knight, but some way manage to jump over the ogre that blocks the doorway, and get green armor as well.
2. double grenade jump off ogre to top part (can you get ogre to move closer to opening?)  or do grenade boost + ogre grenade boost
3. grenade boost off death knight which opens door (will door open fast enough?) or grenade boost of the death knight behind to the door.
E2M4:
1. rj up first lift from stairs, rj off wall from top of lift across acid gap keeping speed from first rj
2. grenade boost + rj or rj + rj off air monster to reach trigger
2. or because of health, instead of above, do rocket boost off wall after getting getting silver key, land on edge before acid, jump over lift and land on first or second stair, jump over stairs keeping speed (not sure if possible)
2*. need to get at least one extra 25 health kit for doing one of the 2s.
3. rocket boost over wall to lift
4. use orge boost to reach exit (saves health and maybe lets you fire at switches faster)
5. use nail gun to shoot switches (possibly use shotty on last switch if you can switch weapons faster than nail takes to travel)
E2M5:
1. Same strat as in tRR
E2M6:
1. Same strat as in tRR expect skip jumping off middle pillar and go straight to the lift

E3M1:
1. Same strat as in tRR
E3M2:
1. grenade boost out of pit after getting gold key
E3M3:
1. same strat at in tRR
E3M4:
1. same strat as in tRR expect do extra rj over ogre after second lift
E3M5:
1. same strat as in tRR (not sure if it's possible, not just because of getting hit from enemies, but also enemies blocking medkits)

E4M1:
1. same strat
E4M2:
1. get orge boost at start
E4M3:
1. Open door opposite of mega health first
2. do grenade boost off fiend right after getting silver key, do grenade boost off top of blob in lava keeping speed from first grenade boost.
3. if health permits and blob is fast enough do blob boost after getting quad
4. grenade boost right after getting gold key
E4M4:
1. same strat as in tRR
E4M5:
same strat
E4M6:
1. rocket boost right after coming out of water, shoot alter after ramp sliding
E4M7:
1. same strat as tRR up to key room except either do rj at start of level, or fit an extra rj in the 5 rj sequence
2. either shoot grenade right before falling into water, lob one onto the vore right before coming up; rocket boost out of water onto grenade, rj + grenade + possible vore boost + second and maybe 3rd rj down hall.
4. rj + double blob boost after silver key door
5. kill vore by quad last and quad grenade boost off this vore to go through the final door, quad rocket off ceiling also if you can't fall down fast enough.

Shub:
Uber-strat!! j/k same strat

Doubt you'll get a big audience for this  Kiss
Heh, I remember somebody doing a very much cheated run through episode 1. He used host_framerate 0.001, god, impulse 9 and 255.
That one was hilarious.

I know that hfr can be beneficial while practising but I tend to "practise" too much with it and have slight problems shifting to normal speed which then feels TOO FAST! If low hfr was allowed, I would have a lot more id records by now. Tongue

It would be interesting to see your project in action but I'm not going to run it. I have too much plans with full speed runs anyway. Smiley

You forgot to mention e1m5 actually.
e2m1: 0:06 has been done with crazy bunnies - http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/otherdemos/demos/bunny/e2m1_hfr_opengl.dz
e2m2: I don't think the bhops + shambler boost is possible. It's hard with gj alone. In the end have you thought of double gj off an ogre?
e2m3: I think the door is too slow.

Hmm, crazy stuff. Good luck.
Just a random post from a non-Quake guy, but this sounds interesting to me in concept, especially done by Spider-Waffle, a name I already know for insane PC stuff like Half Life.
Hey Ho Let's Go
I would most certainly end up watching the entire thing, but it would also pain my heart a bit to know that it was done TAS'ed. I know it's all for fun and show and to give everyone an idea of what's truly possible in Quake, but I'm also one of the few diehard oldschool Quakers left who aren't easily amused when someone tries to 'destroy' the game in an unproper way ;-) If it'll end up anything like your Half-Life run though, then I won't complain too much.

On a different note, I'd REALLY like to see you run some Quake demos the PROPER way :-) I bet you'll be good at it!

Also, check your private messages in a bit...
Sounds interresting. I'm looking forward to it, though I'm not a Quaker so I can't help you with it. I should eventually install and play this game.
And I have to agree with Stubgaard, you should also try running some maps the proper way.
Don't think!  feeeeeal
Will I got a couple demos,  a :33 on e4m3, starts right before getting silver key.  and 2 second saver on e4m2, you skip landing the warp door at the end, I think this trick could done in real time too, and easily done in real time with some scripting help.

The e4m2 trick has already been done.

There's a Quake port to the N64, that could be TASed 'for real'. Smiley
Hey Ho Let's Go
Yeah, as sshplur said, the e4m2 trick has already been done, both on skill 0 and 3.

But I must say, those demos are about as UGLY as ugly can get, yiikes!! If you want to do a proper TAS'ed run through Quake, please have the courtesy to make them look smoother than that, I wouldn't even stand 2 minutes of this, sorry :-)
You can't really call a run in quake using HFR a TAS. Unlike the traditional emulated based TAS, using HFR for values less than 1/72 allows you to do things that are impossible in the game, like the previously linked 0:06 on e2m1.
Don't think!  feeeeeal
Why does slowing the game down allow you to do things that are impossible?  The way the game runs doesn't change does it, I thought this was just helping you give it better input.  I think I might be able to smooth things out a little by using this script:

alias +l "+left;+moveleft"
alias -l "-left;-moveleft"
alias +r "+right;+moveright"
alias -r "-right;-moveright"

could probably make use of scripts like that in normal speedruns as well.  But sometimes when you need to do a 180 quick it's hard to make that look smooth.

Well on e1m2 I manage to jump from the silver key covey back to the otherside, still havn't managed to do the jump the other way but I've come damn close.  Using that picture in the wall is so hard no matter how slow your going, because it's width isn't much greater than your width you can't get enough speed to jump out of it, you could bhop though it thought but it's so hard.

HFR, especially at higher values, changes physics.
Don't think!  feeeeeal
Can anyone explain how or why the physics change, that's a pretty stupid sideffect I think but I'll believe it.  I mean having more fps in games can make you run faster and jump higher.
Try doing the e4m2 trick while bunnying and you will fly.
The result will be fugly but fast. And the whole project would look like "adhd in speedruns" as discussed in general chat. Smiley
Also, there is a funny hfr demo done by Phil - http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/otherdemos/demos/bunny/100mhfr_phil.dz

Re: e2m1 silver key hopping thing

I've done it in real time (albeit with a bit of slowdown while hopping from the window) so in HFR it should be almost a piece of cake. However HFR mucks the game up so much it's a wonder you can't just fly directly through walls or something
Hey Ho Let's Go
Spider-Waffle: I don't have the slightest clue about the technical side of things, but it's true that low hfr changes the physics in Quake, and to a great degree even. There's a bunch of tricks that aren't do-able when the game runs at normal speed. Also, the game behaves differently while you're maneuvering in the air when set to a low hfr. You can actually pick up speed by moving left and right when you're not touching the ground. Still, you might be able to discover some new tricks on your TAS adventure that might lead to records being broken on normal speed :-)

You've probably already read this page, but I suggest you have a look if you haven't:

Mumma
In a slow-motion HFR (0.001 or so) you can bunny straight to the silver key on e3m2 and grab it, it won't fall down the hole. Which is simple proof that the physics change with game speed.

Interesting to see some input from an unseen player (as in quake)!
Don't think!  feeeeeal
Hey, how's the progress with quick done quickest?  You should really look into using the lava blob jump on E4M3 I showed here, it saves at least 3 seconds I think.  With a better strat I think I can get 31.
Hey Ho Let's Go
Have you looked at Horvath's demo for e4m3?

Where's the site that has all the new quake projects in the works with demo links?

I'd love to see Quake getting TAS'd, Especially by spider-waffle.

Quake / projects / ongoing projects

Not that hard to find if you spend 5 seconds looking ;-)
Don't think!  feeeeeal
ah, I had no idea there was speeddemosarchive.com/quake , when you go to speeddemosarchive.com there's no link to it, so you kind of have to be a hacker to find it.
sda loyalist
Or go on the games list, and select 'quake'.

Believe me, we are aware of this travesty! Roll Eyes
