How do I play .dem files in portal? when i try "playdemo anyportalreplay.dem" from the console in portal it says it can't open the file, so i must be missing something.
damn... without a way to do it consistently it will be pain in a long speedrun... =( is there some how-to's about source scripts? i never used any... it seems to work more likely when there is a little pause between crouch and jump... also i placed portals in front of each other just to be able to retry fast =) i think portal placement doesn't matter, just don't put them too low, so they don't touch the floor... the height at which an entry portal is located probably has something to do with the force of boost... in fact i found this "glitch" when my portal was just a little above the floor... i just jumped with crouch and suddenly flew all the way to the orange portal gun (over the moving platform)... i quickly recognized a possible field for abuse =)
p.s.: i hope my english is not so bad =) hello from mother russia.
Hey I don't have portals so could someone just video the demos with fraps then either youtube it or make it into an .avi or something, I really wanna watch that run.
Since friday I've got Portal but when I'm running it on my laptop I get an error - This game has a minimum requirement of directx 8.0 to run properly. Can anybody help me with that or has got the same problem? I've created a thread in Tech Support here.
I found a glitch, which I don't know how useful it could be because it only happened once and I didn't experiment with it.
In 14 right at the beginning I portal'd the far ceiling and fell. I landed on the camera on the far wall which gave me an insane boost. It launched me high and all the way to the wall on the other side without any portals or anything. I don't think it was the impact of the fall because it delayed a second before it launched me. It was probably the movement of the camera. I landed on the moving part, not the little stem it is attached to the wall with. I'm sure there could be something useful done with this. I will experiment after I get a shitload of homework done, midterm tomorrow

Sounds like that superboost Max used in HL2DQ on the coast road. The one where he let a door close on a barrel. :>
Form what I've fooled around with it, it's the same as half-life 2. If you want a cerain delay between crouch and jump, your best bet is something like
+duck;wait;wait;-duck;wait;wait;+jump;wait;-jump
+ means basically 'start holding down', - means 'let go of', and 'wait' is a small pause for a tiny fraction of a second (about 1/30 second? i'm not positive).
The best solution is generally playing around with the number of 'wait's you need
Hmkay, the game is passable in 30 mins! I nearly passed it .....in 40 BUT! damn storm brought the power down and pc switched off !!! I will try to redo the record and save it!

I already did it in 28 minutes, segmented. That's VERY rough though, it's possible in under 20 minutes...Maybe. http://source-dq.com/Portal_28m16s.rar = My demos. :>
Also, I've started a thread on testchmb_a_03 on my Portal forums. COME ON PEOPLE! Lets get this ball rolling!
You can save MORE time by getting the second portal jump right. You'll get shoved upwards out of the exit portal (maintaining your velocity) and then can turn to the final platform, instead of taking jumps. That'll save 1 - 2 seconds maybe? Possibly 3?

Yes, it was very similar to that (though I never attempted that glitch in HL2). And it wasn't 14... I think it was 18 that it happened in. I can't open my game at the moment to check.
Sorry for the demo inversion. The only notable new thing is the 2nd forcefield you have to hop is done using ceiling falling momentum and a well placed shot (took a shitload of tries ) instead of stepping foot in the little side room to the left. Could be done in like 35 or less if done smoothly.
