...I just have to say good luck on a single segment like that.

EDIT: Pidgeotto evolves at Lvl 16. Pikachu might be a bad idea, like 5% catch rate in Viridian Forest, not to mention viridian forest has a low encounter rate anyways.

Trading sequences are also drawn out, and out of the way often. It's might be faster to just get some ultra balls later on and go to places with pokes in the grass, catch and put an exp share on in the elite four.

Magikarp, Goldeen, and half a dozen others are easily collected by fishing, which might make it worth it since they evolve so early.

The problem with fishing pokes is that not only do you have to go thru the going inside the building and talking to the fishing guru deal, but that you also don't guaranteed hook a fish.

The Pikachu doesn't necessarily have to be in the forest, as there are some in the grass outside of rock tunnel.

I've timed the trading sequence, it is only about 5 seconds longer than catching a pokemon from full health, and that's assuming that you get it on the first ball.  For a SS, some of the less out of the way trades would be beneficial, i.e. the spearow=farfetch'd one right there in vermillion.

Also, since I'm going to do this SS, even ultra balls aren't guarantees, so it might be more beneficial to catch them as I go, hitting them once or twice to weaken them and then catch.  Otherwise, I'm backtracking for something that isn't a sure thing.

If I'm going to Mewtwo skip, I'm going to need all the experience I can get, so the Elite 4 experience share might be out of the question.  I'm not even sure at this point if it can be done, but I want to try, since I was able to do the basic run without Zapdos.

Just go without repels and catch what you can and later complete with stones and fishing. And get baby pkmn if possible.

I don't believe you can get baby pokemon without breeding, and you can't breed until LATE in the game, and even then it's on the islands, so at most you'll get 1 egg without losing any time.  The fastest way to do this would be, I believe, to get the 60 dex entries prior to beating the elite 4 for the first time, so that when you go thru the credits and continue your game, you are already in pallet town and then you just have to go to Oak's Lab and get the National Dex.

EDIT:  You cannot breed until Island 4, which you cannot access until after you beat the E4 the first time, and as such, this is an obsolete idea.

Right, stone evolutions are pretty high on my list.  I'd like to avoid fishing and safari pokemon altogether, and I'm reasonably sure that's not going to be terribly difficult.

One thing I'm looking into is seeing whether or not I can exploit the exp share in the fighting dojo.  If I can exp share evolve 5 pokemon (that's one per trainer there) then I get a total of 6 entries (including the freebie hitmon)

Here is my list thus far, for the most part it is in the order that you encounter them in:

Squirtle
Pidgey
Ratatta
Weedle/Kakuna
Caterpie/Metapod
Pikachu
(That's 1/6 th befire brock)

Nidoran Male
Spearow
Magikarp (bought from the man in the pokecenter)
Paras
Geodude
Zubat
Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff
Clefairy/Clefable
Wartortle

(over 1/3 by Misty)

Oddish
Abra? (I'm going to do this single segment, so I'm not sure this one is the best idea)
Ekans
Voltorb
Machop
Onix
Farfetch'd (trade off spearow)
Diglett
Drowzee
Mr. Mime (if I get abra, trade it off.)
(If I get abra and trade it, that's half upon the exit of Rock tunnel)

Raichu
Eevee/somethingeon
Doduo
Gastly/Haunter?
Cubone?
Venonat
Psyduck (surfing)
Tentacool/Tentacruel (surfing)
(around 2/3 here)

Tangela
Likitung (trade tangela)

Fighting Dojo Idea:
Butterfree (exp share evolution)
Beedrill (exp share evolution)
Arbok (exp share evolution)
I need 2 more lower level evolutions for this part...any ideas?
Get the free hitmon

Freebie Lapras
Masterball (I'm hoping to skip getting mewtwo, but we'll see what happens)

Gloom/Vileplume
Growlithe/Arcanine
Ratticate
Koffing
Grimer
Fearow
Machoke
Blastoise
Aerodactyl
Fossil pokemon

I think that covers 60+ The fossils allow me to eliminate the need for Abra/Mr. Mime in a SS run.  Are there any better/different ideas for Pokemon to get available?

My apologies for the double post, just a couple of things to note.  Mankey can be added to the list.  Jigglypuff and Clefairy are relatively rare, so they, and their moon stone evolutions, might have to be replaced on this list.  I'm not sure yet.  Please keep the suggestions flowing!
Everybody loves Hypnotoad!
Pidgeotto's level 16 evolution shouldn't be too hard to get, and Fearow's level 20 one is similar.

Poliwhirl might be worth the effort.  You can evolve it or trade for a Jynx.  Poliwag shouldn't be too hard to get, either.

Graveler and Golbat can be caught in Victory road.

I can't remember if that berry forest sidequest is required, but if it is, you can grab exeggcute (leaf stone to exeggutor) and a hypno from berry forest.

A quick Shellder catch gets you shellder and cloyster, but I think it's fishing only.

Nidorina and Nidorino are fairly common in the Safari Zone, and Moon Stone evolve to Nidoking and Nidoqueen.

That's all I can think of.
The message on the right is false.

Well, I was going off my memory of RBY for that, and I remembered finding a lot of Nidorino in there that usually went down to one ball.  Of course, I seem to have forgotten that Nidorina are much less common in FR than Nidorino.

Still, since Nidoran evolves at level 16, you could use that for one of your pokemon to evolve in the dojo, then Moon Stone it into a Nidoking.
Back in the game!
Sorry for the lack of updating, but my 6 week old daughter got sick and spent the last 3 days in the hospital.  She's home again now, and doing MUCH better Smiley

Since someone had to stay at the hospital with her, I spent some of that time doing a test run on Round2, and I figured out quite a few things...I'll likely make a detailed update tomorrow.  I did find out that you can catch wild Pidgeotto on one of the islands (I'll have to look up which again), and I ran into a wild Arbok while on Victory Road.  Clefairy is entirely too rare to try to catch (never saw one thru all of Mt. Moon this test run), so if I do catch one, it'll be based on luck while trying to get a Zubat, Geodude, and Paras.  Pikachu is the same thing.  If I get real lucky and find them on my actual run, I'll get 4 entries for the price of 2 though.  I'll put a complete list up when I post tomorrow, after I beat the E4R2 (The only thing I have left to do on my game now)
Back in the game!
Alright guys, I'm going to post my 60 dex, in order from the pokedex.

Squirtle
Wartortle
Caterpie
Metapod (Dojo exp share evolution)
Butterfree (Dojo exp share evolution)
Weedle
Kakuna (Dojo exp share evolution)
Beedrill (Dojo exp share evolution)
Pidgey
Pidgeotto (Wild catch, one of the islands)
Ratatta
Raticate (Wild catch)
Spearow
Fearow (Wild catch)
Ekans
Arbok (Wild catch, victory road)
Nidoran Male
Jigglypuff
Wigglytuff
Zubat
Golbat (Wild, of course)
Oddish
Gloom (Wild island catch)
Vileplume
Paras
Venonat
Diglett
Meowth
Psyduck
Golduck (Wild island catch)**
Mankey
Primeape (Wild, Victory road)
Growlithe
Arcanine
Abra*
Machop
Machoke (Victory Road, wild)
Tentacool
Geodude
Farfetch'd
Gastly
Onix**
Drowzee
Hypno (Island 3 sidequest, necessary for E4R2)
Voltorb
Marowak (Victory Road wild)
Hitmonchan
Koffing
Mr. Mime*
Magikarp (purchased before Mt. Moon)
Gyrados (dropped off Magikarp @ daycare, picked it back up after beating Viridian Gym, evolved @ Dojo)
Lapras
Eevee
Flareon
Omanyte
Aerodactyl
Snorlax (Masterballed)

I guess technically I left out 3 entries, but they are part of my top secret plan, which appears as though it will work Wink  Blastoise is left out of the above because I do not obtain a Blastoise...and a Mewtwo skip is entirely possible, with relative ease even, and without the abuse of X-items for the most part.

*Abra can be great balled with a halfway decent success rate, or so it seems, and there is one hidden great ball right before you learn Mega Punch/Kick outside of Mt. Moon, so, if while I'm looking for my Oddish or whatever in that patch of grass I encounter a wild Abra, I'll try to Great ball it.  If I fail, I only lose an extra 10-15 seconds, and if I succeed, that's 2 less entries I have to find, due to the Mr. Mime tradeoff.  The in-game trades, btw, are faster for a single segment for obtaining the 60 entries, IMO, because you don't have to spend time wandering in grass looking for as many pokemon, and you don't have to run the risk of accidentally critical hitting it while trying to weaken it and KOing it.

**Onix catch rate is relatively low (I went thru like 10 balls or so), and he's relatively rare.  I will probably just run from this battle if I do encounter it.  There is an in-game trade, your Golduck for something, I forget what, but it's something different than what's in my dex right now.

Tangela's catch rate is insanely retarded, so both it and the trade for Likitung are out of the question.

This time around, I did manage to skip the Safari and Fishing scene, but I'm not completely sure if that's  possible without a little bit of luck (Pikachu making an appearance in the forest, and/or Clefairy appearing before I catch my Zubat, Geodude, and Paras in Mt. Moon, for example)

Pikachu/Raichu and Clefairy/Clefable happening will allow me to eliminate 4 of these 5: Arbok, Primeape, Marowak, Golbat, and Machoke...basically allowing me to Repel thru Victory road after I catch one.

Are there any other ideas out there as far as the 60 is concerned?  I'd rather not rely on luck, but if I have to, I will rather than fish and safari catch, because it takes too much time for something that's not close to a guarantee.

As far as the Elite 4 Round 2 Pokemon are concerned, it's pretty smooth sailing by the time I get there with this strat.  My test run time ended around 6:45, but that was with a LOT of testing, and I think I fell asleep while playing at some point in time or another (I was at the hospital with my daughter after all, and it was just a test run.) Even without that mentioned, it's entirely unacceptable for anywhere remotely NEAR that point.  Some reasons for which were I did not repel thru Mt. Moon at all while TRYING to find a Clefairy, which did not turn up.  I also spent about 10 minutes looking for a Pikachu before I gave up.  Every little thing adds up though.  I was mistaken on the island bit too...you have to finish the sidequest on islands 1-3, (fastest to do so after beating Blaine and Bill is right there talking to you), but you also have to get the ruby on Mt. Ember, go help Loreli beat Team Rocket on Island 4, go to the dotted hole to get the Sapphire, watch it get stolen, then go to the Rocket Warehouse and beat that, give it back to Celio (I have to test to see if this part is necessary) and finally go back to see Loreli before you can challenge the Elite 4 a second time.

It's also best to have 60 entries after coming out of the E4 the first time, because Oak will take you directly from your house and give you the National Dex after you reload your file.

That's about all I've got folks!
Back in the game!
Bad news guys:  My DVD recorder that I bought was pretty much crap.  I was going to burn from VHS to DVD, and it messed up my VHS 2:54 run, so unless anyone knows how I can try to fix it or can fix it for me, I'll have to re-do my run.  Sad

The good news is that I bought a brand new DVD recorder that works with all disc types, so if I do have to redo my run, I'll be able to do so whenever, and I've got RWs now, so I won't try to VHS it again.
Back in the game!
Ugh, shitty 3:03 on DVD.  I won't submit that here, but is there anyone interested enough for me to bother hosting it on youtube or something?  I'll go for another run by tomorrow, I suspect, and hopefully beat the 2:54.
What Are Ya' Buyin?
Put it on YouTube. I'm interested.
Back in the game!
I'm not giving away a whole lot here, but I've got bruno thru lance, and then the rival battle, on youtube.  Keep in mind that this isn't perfect, because by this point I knew there was no way I'd beat my old time, so I just didn't give a flying fuck.

O Zlda?
Concerning your 60 pokedex run ideas, I think the safari zone should not be ignored. You have to navigate through it anyway, and there's at least a few pokemon that are common encounters that are easy to catch on the first or second try. If nothing else this could help with a few numbers on the list.

Even for not giving a damn you had too many errors in just those few battles ie. alakazam, was your blastoise max special? many times you were close but not enough and ended up triggering full restore, +10% bite is a bit weaker than surf so if there's the chance it won't ohko then no need to use it specially if you got elixir.

You don't use brick break past lorelei so can't you get something there that helps? Hail, Hidden Power.

Meh, I'm not sure what to put there.  There's not a lot that's available en route.  The best thing that Blastoise can use against Gyarados that I know of that's not terribly far out of my way would be Toxic.  I could replace BB for Earthquake and that is always a OHKO on Alakazam, but only 10 PP.  This is no where close to being perfect, mostly because I wanted to test a few things differently than my normal.  Hopefully today I'll have something that's better than 2:54, and much better than what you saw.

EDIT:  The dying on Bruno was me testing to see if I could OHKO brunos fighting pokemon using Torrent Sweep (which obviously I cannot).

2nd EDIT:  Earthquake also probably not worth it because it can't do anything to Gyarados.  In a typical run, he's the only 3HKO pokemon I ever fight at this point.

Does anyone have a file that is currently at the Elite Four?  If so, I need someone to test something very specific for me.  I need someone to fight against Jynx and have her use attract on a male pokemon.  After she uses attract, I need to know whether or not a Lum Berry, which is supposed to cure ANY status ailment, will reverse attraction.  I would do it, but I currently do not have any Lum Berries left in my game.  I would really appreciate the help!
The exact same thing happened to me in a failed Blue Version SS.

It was level 5 though, so I thought it was the speed that was the variable.
Back in the game!
Hey, here's an update, kinda.

Lum berry does NOT work, tested.  New strategy after cycling road implemented.  2HKO on Muk now possible without critical hits, OHKO on all of Koga's other pokemon now.  Also OHKOs on all of Sabrina's pokes, Bruno, and Agatha's pokemon.  I'm not sharing the secret yet, but anyone who knows the game might already know what I'm doing...

New goal?  Sub 2:45 definitely possible...maybe even sub 2:30?
Catchin' them all
I can imagine something that has to do with Torrent, but I could be wrong and you're already doing that. X/
Everybody loves Hypnotoad!
He may be getting Hydro Cannon, although I would think that would take too long to get to be worth it.
Catchin' them all
Plus you'd need to recharge after a KO, so it wouldn't really save any time. And shaky accuracy.
