everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I like how nobody noticed this before, lol. Either it's recent and they applied the changes retroactively, or people just say "oh well" and don't bother posting about it if they don't get the commentary. Worst case, we disable archive links for runs like these, although it probably won't come to that.

Despite what happened in the past, we probably could break from archive if we had torrents for all new releases, but if we were going to do that sort of thing, it would make more sense to only archive + torrents and actually make some money, lol.
i've contacted archive.
says they started serving mp4 from lighttpd mod_h264_streaming on friday. this is to allow seeking over http. was considering doing something like this for sda as well but never got around to it (not that you can switch to the commentary track with the current flash player anyway lol). said she'll look for a fix/workaround.
can someone confirm it's fixed now? archive says they are pushing out a rule that restricts streaming to derived mp4s only ...
It's fixed.  I looked at the MM6 and MM9 lqs from archive and they're identical to the ones from dl.

On the Master of Orion 2 page:

Quote:
Released for the PC in 1996 by SimTex, Master of Orion 2 (MOO2), sequel to the popular Master of Orion, is a classic turn-based sci-fi 4X game with the objective of becoming the ruler of the galaxy. The game has 3 endings depending on which way you become galactic ruler (elected, attacking interdementional aliens, or conquering all other races in the galaxy). The main problem with MOO2 was that its success spawned MOO3, which many fans of the Master of Orion series like to pretend never existed.

Some small changes to my SM64DS text:

Quote:
Tip for the viewers:
For the best viewings on this run its recommended to download the High/Insane quality MP4 files and play it on Media Player Classic.
Then with the keyboard's Num Pad press:
9 to change size,
8/2 to change the height,
4/6 to change the width,
To move the video, hold Control (CTRL) and press either 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 to change the position, this is done if you want to see either the Top (Action) or Touch (Map) screen in full.
If you screwed the video's position and wanted back to normal, just press 5.

I relised that watching the HQ run in Quicktime is way better than Media Player Classic, this is the first Dual Screen video on the site and the verification copies were notably different to the published ones.

So I would like to say this instead,
Tip for the viewers: For the best viewings on this run it's recommended to download the High quality MP4 files and play it on QuickTime.

Star 31: SSL: Inside the Ancient Pyramid.
Inside the pyramid, instead of going around the interior level design, why not go to the middle and abuse Luigi's Back Flips, I can get to the top of the pyramid in no time.

When I typed this run up I couldn't remember which star came next and the video shows that Star 30 is Inside the Ancient Pyramid and Star 31 is Shining atop the pyramid (so the edit is a simple swap).

That's all I've found for now.

Sorry there seems to be some more minor errors to my SM64 DS text

Matt E. told me from PM on Youtube that he did make most of the route from the first page of the SM64 DS topic.

So instead of this:

Change it to this

ToiletPro who had posted a link of Matt E's 80 star route which were done by themselves (Matt.E had made the first revision from scratch and then both Matt and ToiletPro made better revisions until December 2007), I came in Mid-2008 and made some adjustments for an Segmented route which seems to be a bit faster overall.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

On the new Thief page comments, I'm guessing by the format this should be on a separate line:

Mega Man Legends was released on N64 as Mega Man 64.  We have a run up of it, but the listing doesn't mention it's the same as the N64 game.

"It was released on the PlayStation in 1997, Nintendo 64 in 2000 under the title Mega Man 64, Microsoft Windows in 2001"

Kinda iffy but it already says PC so why not. BTW not listing MM64 was intentional before, because we had very clear rules about which systems were listed (different title means different listing), but since I already had to cave in on that, it's probably better to do so here too.

It does kinda bother me that all this random crap I've done with stuff like this in the past year is all going to be thrown in the trash later when I go through and redo every single one of these.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
I keep on forgetting to tell you this on IRC, Enhasa, so I'll tell you here. Lost levels isn't  listed in the SNES game list.

It's not supposed to be. I think people are trying to have the system listings do 2 completely separate things. They like the SNES or whatever system, and then want to see all runs done on SNES. That's different than all SNES games. Game pages should be about the games and not the runs. (Grenola had the same idea but his conclusion was the opposite, that the focus should be on each run.) Anyway I should change the title of this topic. Since I fixed all the typos around page 14 or wherever, it's no longer "point out minor typos" but "point out decisions you disagree with and want changed." Undecided

Before I redo everything, I have about 20-30 questions I would want to poll, if I can remember any of them, and while it's infeasible to ask that much (so I'll have to limit to say 5 or less), the system listings question would be something like, should we:

1) Not even care about what systems the games themselves are on. Only list the system a run is performed on. This is the tasvideos approach, and everyone seems to think we should adopt all their rules, and they should adopt all of ours, so they would like this. I don't know much about TG, but I think this is their approach too, but everyone thinks we should feud with TG and disagree with everything they do so that's a washout.

2) Games listed by original release systems (current policy), plus runs listed by system run on. This is what I would do if I didn't poll. This doesn't seem to be very popular, but as far as I can tell, anything else would be even more unpopular.

3) List the systems a run is performed on, games inherit the systems from their runs. I bet lots of people think this is a great idea until I remind them we have FF7 only for PC and not PS1.

4) Fuck all this shit completely. I only use the full game list, personally. It's fastest, so what's the point using anything else? This is what I would do if it was up to me. Luckily it's not?

everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I just wanted to point out I'm upset people have figured out I'm a softie (although why did it take so long? :P).

Grenola ignored this topic (which was originally about pointing out actual mistakes), now it's all about fix your comments that you should have done correctly in the first place. Undecided No kidding, I've had someone PM me to change A to B, and then PM me a couple days later to change B back to A.

Then again, ignore this whole post because the alternatives are worse:

1) don't make changes (i.e. have errors)
2) have a login system so people can edit their own info
3) have a wiki

Please don't tell me #2 or #3 is better. The forums are already bad enough as it is (this is what happens when you let people edit their own stuff), and I'd rather maintain the separation between the site and forum so I can still say SDA is awesome truthfully, because I am talking about the site. Wink

Edit: Just for fun, I decided to look back and find the last time I actually corrected an administrative mistake (nostalgia?). Wasn't that far back, April 15, although the previous one was December 20. Although I know there was at least the Lost Planets IL also. Last one of my mistakes was back on November 28, although I had a boatload of them in a row around then. Definitely NOT saying I am a mistake-free person, in fact I probably make a thousand minor mistakes daily in everyday life. For SDA I triplecheck everything though and automate whatever I can to reduce typos. Site rewrite will actually have a good bit of built-in error checking.
Complete. Global. Saturation.
So, um... yeah, I vote for option 1 in Mike's edited post. This is even better if it makes it easier for you.

And for your post, I vote for option 1 again. Letting people have access to the page on SDA could lead to all sorts of trouble. Plus, there's that whole issue about changing over access whenever someone else beats their run. It's better if only the mods are allowed to make changes, which they shouldn't have to because of the point you already made about how people should proof-read their work first. And a turning the game pages into Wikis? Hell no. That's even more required moderation and extra crap that isn't needed.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Yeeeeesh, next time just correct me, don't get all pissy about it Tongue

I do agree people should do a better job of proofreading their comments in the first place. I have a couple of typos in most of my comments, but it's not worth messing with the pages just to fix a couple of spelling and grammar errors here and there when time could be spent doing better things.

In other words, I'm surprised you even bothered correcting people's typos in the first place when it's not even worth the time.

^ This is what I want TBH.

Thing is, Lost Levels (NES/Famicom) is a lot different than Lost Levels SNES. It's not like it's the same game. For games that are identical I can see having it the way SDA does currently, but even still there are slight changes sometimes.

I'm curious of something though. Could someone submit a Super Mario Bros. run for the SNES version? I mean, it's a remake of the game, but it's certainly a lot different to play. (no, I'm not going to submit one)

Hmm, that's interesting, thanks for bringing that up. Smiley Maybe lots of people want #1. It's even a lot easier. It would even make us look like we have a lot more games listed than we do currently. Lips Sealed I guess it is worth polling, but the reason we have it the way we do now is because we figure people would like to see all runs of a game, even on different systems. On TASvideos, I saw a NES Marble Madness TAS and it wasn't very good, when at the same time there was already a far better Genesis one. I never even knew this until much later. Like I said, we had people asking why there isn't a FF7 run when there was already a PC run, just FF7 was listed as PC only (I'm pretty sure this was a mistake and not a decision).

Can you find a way around that with #1? Edit: never mind, it's obvious, just link to the other versions. Implementation isn't obvious but this isn't about implementation. Could even link to other games in the same series. The only annoying thing is that series aren't well-defined. We could put up a Gears of War before 2 was announced, and it wouldn't go in a series, but then it would be stupid to have to retroactively put that into a series. I guess that could be done on demand whenever we got another run in the same series, because we're not about classifying the games, but the runs (i.e. the Gears series on SDA in this example would only include 1 even though a 2 exists).

Double edit: Wait, I'm a retard. Linking wouldn't help the fact that someone would browse the PS1 list and not find FF7 if no PS1 version run exists in the first place. It only helps in situations of two versions of the same game, finding the other. #1 is much, much easier and less for people to bug us about, so someone please help me with a solution here. Seems to me that there is absolutely no way our FF7 could "know" a PS1 version exists unless we either have a run, or we add this info. Maybe the solution is just to say tough luck, should have used the search (which is what tasvideos does), but I don't like that.

Triple edit: I think the solution is just to say tough luck, but this is mitigated since there are other lists. Are people really going to use PS1 to find FF7? More likely to use a Final Fantasy list or an RPG list (genre was already going to be included, series maybe because of above). I know you could still come up with an example of a game that would screw people over, but it's harder now.

Also wanted to add that #3 actually isn't any tougher to implement than #1, because the inheritance would be automatic. If you prefer #1 to #3 you are literally saying that you do not want to be able to look at game pages. There should only be run pages (which would show game info like blurb and screenshots at the top). This is not heresy, this is what Grenola wanted IIRC, I'm just making sure anyone picking #1 knows that is what they want.

For any game, you can submit any version. The whole "is this game N64 or not" is only for listing the game pages in the game list, which only matters when selecting a particular system and not "all" (which is default). It doesn't even show up in the pages themselves.

Quote from TheQuietMan:
And for your post, I vote for option 1 again. Letting people have access to the page on SDA could lead to all sorts of trouble.

Well, I'm going with option 0 which is the current system, which is fixing errors. Although I'm mixing it with "remind people that they should get things right in the first place" to put the fear of Radix back in them. Wink

What can I say, I'm a softie. All I have to do is go RAWR every now and then to get people to think "you know, maybe it's better to get them right in the first place."

Also I really did want to point out that a lot of people want systems to be included not because they think such and such game should be on a system list but because they think a run should be on a system list. I'm saying that while currently you can't have one without the other, later you can, so you can stop asking for something when you really mean something else.
