So, I've decided to do a SS any% speedrun of Pandemonium. It's not a very well known game but it has been mentioned in the request thread, so there should be at least some interest. I myself remember playing this game as a kid (and never being able to finish it) - it's a fun 2.5D platformer, and very runnable. I was able to find the PC version of the game for only 3 euros, and I've now been planning and practicing the run on the PS version on an emulator.

I will obviously play as Nikki since Fargus can't do a double jump. There aren't many shortcuts or routes to choose from, the game is pretty linear, but I have found a few tricks that will speed the run up. One of them is near the end of level 2; if you jump correctly off the roof just after riding to the top of the tower, the change of the camera angle will send you flying forward, and if you manage to land on every other plant, you can save some time. But mostly I need to just focus on one thing: practice, practice and practice.

Also, I figured out a fast way to beat the final boss. If you move the cannon in the exactly right position, the eyeball will get stuck between the cannon's bombs and the cannon controller. This way you won't have to reload the cannon at all.

I've planned and practiced the first 6 levels and the first boss so far and it's looking good.

That's about it for now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated!
Thread title:
My memory is a bit hazy about the game, except I remember that it was pretty awesome and a bit of a "different" game at the time (And quite difficult too I believe). So I'm looking forward to it, good luck Smiley
I was gonna do a 100% walkthrough (not a speedrun) for this game, however, you only have two lives. Or you start with 2 anyway. This game is kinda difficult.
Currently occupying the grey area.
i'd watch this one. Liked it as a kid, but could never get very far.

Yeah, it is quite difficult. I've decided to get the heart container in level 5, the one where you have to jump through all the stone rings. Getting it doesn't waste much time (two seconds at most) and it'll greatly help me in the next levels.

That seems to be common. Tongue But thanks.
defying gravity
I think the most difficult about this game for me as a child was that I didn't discover the extra heart containers, so I still ran around with 2 hearts in the later levels, and I think i stopped shortly after I got that dragon.
I'll definitely watch!

I had no idea they existed when I was a kid, either.

So yesterday I got around to plan and time level 6, which is surprisingly short when you just run through it, and the first boss battle. Here are my best times:

6. Acid Pools: 00:47.36
B1. Shroom Lord: 00:26.27

From the look of it, the levels 1-6 and the first boss, which is 1/3 of the game (level-wise, of course), will take about 10 minutes. Not too bad.
-_-"
I did request it, I don't know about others, but yea, I'm really interested with this. I haven't seen this game for a while Smiley

Good to hear. Smiley

A little bit of update:
The PC copy of the game I bought didn't work, so I had to buy another one which arrived today. This one works nicely, except for some audio problems, but I'm sure I'll figure them out once I look into it more. The game seems to run faster than the one I've been playing on an emulator, so I'll just delete my best times and time some new ones later.
Hello, i am a newcomer here, I like this site now actually and I never knew it existed. I have been practicing Pandemonium 1 for the Playstation 1 for about 3 months now. I did sort of a halfway mark that's kind of a power run, its already on Youtube. But ever since I did that I have been practicing hard to create a single segment run for the game that will be pretty tough to imitate, and I am almost there, i am getting some very good results, however the game is nearly impossible to do perfectly so some risks have to be removed. I heard some people were discussing the game on here from someone I met, I don't know if its true, but no other speedruns of the game have popped up yet(making my power run the first?). I have a few questions:

1. I record on a PS3 with a Hauppauge HD PVR using a copy of the non-pal version supplied by the PlayStation Store, is there anything wrong with that?
2. I do this that way because I actually break CDs from overplaying them, psone games are very fragile. Must I buy an actual cd for the run?
3. How many errors are allowed in a single segment, because it seems there's always one somewhere, I can make it through with no deaths, and I can probably knock the total time down to around 35:00-40:00, beyond that goes mimicking a TAS.

Don't want to post something dumb, but I have lost enough sleep over it!
My feelings on The Demon Rush
1. That's fine.

2. No, as long as the emulation is official like the playstation store, it's fine.

3. Preferably none, unless if they save time.

I don't know the specifics of playing PS1 games on PS3, but it's always allowed to do it this way. It may constitute a separate category if it significantly changes some things about the game, however.

As for how good the run is expected to be: it's kind of hard to say objectively without knowing anything about the game. But all runs go through a peer verification before they get posted to the site. What I'd recommend is looking up some recent runs for games of similar type and length, and using the run and the comments to try and work out just how much leniency you have for mistakes.

Personally, I'm running a game of similar length right now (Sonic 3 and Knuckles), which has a lot of complex tricks, but I expect to have less than probably 30 seconds of errors across the entire run. Your mileage (as well as the verifiers') may vary significantly.

believe it or not I am kind of the authority on this game now, i posted a walkthrough that was quite good but now I just have to do it faster

did that single segment using only Fargus for show and didn't die, still took 53 minutes but all i need to do is not get hearts and use Nikki. Someone that was familiar with this site actually commented on my video, we've been talking for several days he actually told me about SDA. He asked for tips and was rather discouraged about making his run after watching mine, I dunno why it kinda blows but its the best walkthrough ever made for the game and i looked. I think hell do a segmented so well see who's better Tongue I'm for sport.
whoops I didn't mean for that to sound so arrogant, my sincerest apologies, I didn't realize how rude that sounded until I posted it
Heh, it's not your run that discouraged me to do a single segment run, Dumpsterknight, it's the fact that I would never be satisfied with a single segment run myself because you simply have to make sacrifices in terms of used tricks and risks in order to make it through alive. I'm a perfectionist so that's why I'd rather go for a segmented run, doing every level seperate, so that more risks can be taken. I'd love to see a single segment run however.

I don't think it's as simple as not getting hearts and using Nikki. You obviously have to use Nikki for the run to get accepted because of the significant gain in speed, but in your current run you often make use of Fargus' tumble in situations where it would be difficult to simply avoid the enemy, so you'll have to adjust your strategies a bit for a run with Nikki.

Also, you're right, there aren't really any other videos to compare your run with and use for possible improvements. There's a couple of guys working on a TAS of the game, which is pretty useful. I was able to exactly replicate their run of the first level in just a few tries, so if they finish it you'll have a good estimate of the time you should be aiming at.

You are very correct it is far more than just using Nikki, there's a lot of tricks to be learned and luckily I picked some of them up already. I plan to complete the game with only 3 hearts, getting only the Fungus grotto heart container. I messed with Honcho's Airship and Dragoon Skyfort  a lot last night. Apparently there is a bug to speed kill Goon Honcho very quickly but I am not 100% sure how, some guy did that on youtube. Waiting for the TAS is an option, but with how much progress I feel I am making, I would rather not wait, and there are already a handful of levels that I simply can't find ways to do better without  abusing rare jump slings with Nikki. Working on this I've concluded that the hardest levels of the game are actually levels 1-4 while levels like Storm Temple and Frozen Cavern are much much easier due to their 1 track level design as opposed to the very first level that makes you do absurd things to save time that are nearly impossible to replicate twice in a row, I am just glad they are at the beginning.

Some guy posted a decent walkthrough the same time I did, hes pretty good he did in segments and managed to complete speed greed legitimately, a first, he does the levels fast but there's obvious room for improvement.

There is some technique to jumping on the balloon that i cannot replicate twice in a row, which may mean it would be absurd to depend on putting it in a single segment.

If there's more bugs like that out there then ugh, gonna take forever to find them, I have played this game once a year since it came out and I never found any positive bugs just ones that kill you like falling through a platform.
Hi,

It has been quite a long time I'm visiting the site without ever registering, I should introduce myself in the section, well I'll do it soon :).

Just wanted to give a fast answer because I'm pretty busy atm, I'm the guy who made Goon Honcho in 55".
As I told in my mail, you can do the glitch once almost every time. Twice is being quite rare. So maybe just train to be able to glitch it at the beginning.

I'll post tricks that might help you -I have quite alot, next week are holidays-, there are quite interesting things like in the third level, where there are spikes on the floor you can just get volontary touched to get propulsed (and trust me, doing it well will push you REALLY far away =p).

I'll probably make a short video with a few tricks or at least post them there, soon. Wink

(PS : sorry for my english.. I'm french, that explains everything, no ?)

I always thought your english was fine! Thought I would update this every few days at the start. I found a cheap and easy way to make the boss "derp" his head up in the air longer, sometimes, he will "derp" I call it derp when he looks up in the air with his mouth open, any way "sometimes" if you double jump at the top of a regular bounce it will make him derp second time allowing you to hit him harder, but it's iffy, not like a regular bounce but one that would normally almost be high enough to trigger him to do that. So far people have only given me tips for the first few levels, and as I already said those are the hardest for me to pull off in a single segment.

Everyone has multiple youtube accounts and I couldn't really say anything other than "some guy" Smiley I would have given you credit though, my bad.

You sound like you have already attempted a speed run on multiple levels at this, and any tips would be a blessing.

At the time of writing this I have uncovered a bug that only Fargus can use, to my knowledge anyway. Tumbling at certain areas and locations in the game have a chance to give you a large speed bug. It increases movement speed drastically and lasts from level to level but makes it very hard to control the character. I have encountered it in Honcho's Airship and by tumbling in midair at the end of a boss when the screen goes black has a chance to trigger it. It seems too hard a bug to use even if I know how to get it, in other words I don't think I would use it because it can actually make the game more difficult but not that interesting to watch, yea try getting through the last part of storm temple with like 6x speed. I will make a youtube video of it, it is pretty rare and I am having issues getting it to happen again but it would be interesting to find out if it is in other versions of the game such as PC. I would really appreciate comments on this.
Well, I didnt know this bug and I should really try it, but to be honnest, when I watch a SDA, it is for the beauty of the game; and the skill of the player.
I personnaly dont think i'd enjoy a 6x faster "bugued" run to watch.
Maybe try to do as perfect as you can, but avoiding this 6x speed glitch, first.

If you can make the youtube video it would be nice, never heard of this bug so far, so a video would be welcomed :).

I agree with everything you mentioned, I really don't have to worry about getting it without Fargus, it occasionally plagued the run I did with him and If i was recording I had to restart the entire game. I never intended to use it its actually one of the bugs I dread coming across most. It was worth mentioning because it seriously changes everything.

I started practicing this game in late July, with only about 3 weeks total days not playing. Most of that has been spent trying to find the fastest ways through levels. Many of the methods I used in my other run I am able to apply here, Nikki makes those same methods faster.

Skull Fortress: Takes me under 10 tries luckily its the first level
Levels 2+3: are very easy for me to pull things off, Dungeon Tower looks chaotic, and there are two time saving ticks i cannot use because they both require you to get hurt, and If I have to waste health I'd rather it be in the next level, besides there's no spare health, hurting yourself to save time is more of a segmented thing I think. Sad Charging through a place while getting hurt to save time usually results in getting hit again.
Level 4: Ugh, takes me 20 tries to get a near perfect attempt on it, an enormous pain in the behind level that I have spent days practicing and improving on for several weeks now, and getting hurt here means an automatic restart due to the stalagmites and flowers you must be able to 1 shot. Originally I carried Ice here from the first level, however I found it quicker to kill one of the flowers at the start with fire and then grab the shrink ray.

The rest of the game is oddly enough easier to do single segment, with only the second boss and Dragoon Skyfort(Had to skip something in this too) to rain on your parade. This is an incredibly difficult platformer, one that I will be happy to never play again once i am done with it!

I am wondering if it would be faster to just die somewhere, i have looked into it, but with how the checkpoints are setup and how easy it is to avoid stuff if you have a powerup i don't think it would be necessary anymore.

I got sick from playing this game every time I have sat down to play it in the last week, I get chronic headaches every time I get in front of it.
Taking breaks regularly is very important in speedrunning. Tongue My GTA III run took me over 2,5 years to complete.

About the first level, I find it quite easy actually. I was able to pull off the route used in the tas of this level in as little as 10 tries:

Except for the jump at 1:33. And you would have to skip the ice ray at the start, not sure how much you need it for future levels.
I would just like to remind everyone that I have a small bounty on a Pandemonium run; check the bounty page for more. Good luck!

aye good job! the tricky part for me is always the 2/3 part with all the climbing, it can take me around the same amount of tries to do that part nicely, but the thing is if I'm doing the level well and one small thing messes up I tend to not start over(usually something that costs me maybe 2 secs, unless it badly disturbs the movement of the level such as enemy positions, not in all levels but particularly the odd number levels for some reason). My final video will purposely have several minutes lost I am well anticipating. I just can't pull off all the time saving maneuvers, I have spent the past week losing my mind, getting migraines, and losing sleep trying to be perfect. I just have to start cutting back a little, not a lot, but there is a small list of thigns I'll have to cut out that I may end up listing on here later. All in all I am sure it will still be a very good run, although I still am looking for a solid time goal. i haven't even really checked that yet, the last run took 53 minutes following SDA timing, this one is sooo much faster though. Which brings me to my next question:

I'm wondering what time limit you want on it Chrno, its not "Obviously" listed in
http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/cash_bounties_for_speedruns361.html
unless I am a huge noob (it happens) or I can't find the one that I am supposed to see(bigger noob), because I can give a speed run easily (and I'm sure Silmaranza could to) its just quality being an issue Tongue and since it seems were the only ones working on it I guess its who just gets done first
WOW.

Just a good quality speedrun will do, glitches are a plus of course but i'm not bothered about what category of run you want to do (I just want to see a childhood classic get raped!). I don't really have a time limit, spend as much time as you need to.
