you can skip the tunic (without that whole timer skip) as long as you can last at least 2 minutes (the time it takes to beat volvagia). 1 extra bottle (for 2 total) and 2 heart containers is sufficient to do that.
I'm pretty sure that the fire barrier in Ganon's castle takes less than 2 min.
I'll do it for him. Longshot the wood and you don't even have to use the scarecrow. In this fashion, you also don't have to waste your time learning it in lake hylia, or even playing it for that matter.
As for the likelike comment, I have this to say: If someone found a glitch where after getting every item, HC, and skulltula, etc. in the game, and then, right before dealing the final blow to Gannon, it deletes all your items except for the master sword.... do you think that you could go through the game collecting all the items (or as many as you want), and then just discard them at the end and call it a minimalist run? No. Firstoff, the existance of minimalist runs is to show how little you can get (items etc) while still being able to beat the game. The exciting part of minimalist runs: THE DIFFICULTY OF NOT HAVING THOSE ITEMS! If you get them and then discard them later (spirit temple persay) that defeats half the purpose and enjoyment of a minimal percent run. I say don't do it. Also, be well aware that if you do choose to do the v1.0 trick, it will probably be: A) not accepted (depends on Radix's view) B) in it's own special category. just so you know.
But the Like Like isn't a glitch, it's a completely legit strategy and part of the game. That's why you can buy tunics in shops - in case they get eaten. You can't buy bows or hammer, din's fire, etc.
If you don't do the timer glitch, it isn't minimilist. Skipping the tunic is required to make it minimilist. And losing it via like like doesn't count. I did this game minimilist and skipped both(also, not having a shield for most the game is awkward). Hmm, I didn't think I'd post on this forum since speed's not a big thing for me(I like to mosey around a bit too much for my own good), but minimilist is becomming my zelda specialty, so I thought I'd contribute.
I'm not sure how fast you can make things, but if you have some really good speed, you could do this route:
kid link whatnot/hookshot/scarecrow's song activation -> Ice Cavern -> Forest -> water -> gerudo fortress/requirum of spirit -> hammer -> spirit -> timer -> volvagia -> shadow(FAST) -> Ganon's Castle fire room -> endgame
If you do this, you have a shot at only needing to activate the glitch once(I don't think 3 hearts and 1 bottle can complete the fire room in Ganon's castle). The Volvagia fight is right near the entrance so you wouldn't lose much time if you S+Q warped to the temple of time right after getting the boss key since becomming a kid was prerequisite anyway(you might want to get there as an adult to get the warp right after water). The other advantage is crouch stab as soon as possible since the mirror shield is your first crouch stab.
I would think Ice Cavern is fastest to go first since it's closer to Kakariko than the forest temple, and the serenade of water puts you closer to the forest temple than Kakariko, but I may be wrong. The zora warp in the lost woods might change things significantly. But using the serenade of water then gives you an excellent chance to activate the scarecrow's song as you go right by it on your way to the forest.
But yeah, you absolutely have to do the timer glitch if you want to consider your game minimilist. Doing otherwise for the sake of time makes it a normal speed run, not minimilist.
Also, if you do this in large segments(I'm convinced S+Q warping is needed for fastest time in a few spots), watch out for Deku Nuts. I'll tell you the most random one was in the haunted wasteland rest spot in the back-right pot. If you grab it, back to your last save for you!
I hope I helped. And, since I forgot to say it, be you warned that the glitch lasts for just one hour. So between the second you start the dampe race you have one hour and probably whatever time the heat timer will give you to complete your tasks without having to redo it. So that's why you want to put off that Volvagia fight as long as humanly possible so the timer might extend into Ganon's Castle(activating it is a MAJOR waste of time, so you only want to do it once). Alas, the major downside is the fact that you don't get the uberboots until the very end. But the fire medallion is required for the nocturne which is in turn required for the hover boots.
You can buy the Goron's Tunic, if it gets eaten by a like like, IIRC, in the Goron shop. I think the same goes for the Zora Tunic, once you've unfrozen the shop w/blue fire.
and like likes can definitely eat tunics. ugh, once in the shadow barrier, the like like ate my tunic then spit me over the edge. I actually had to go buy a new one. that Zora tunic costs 300 rupees!
to fix some dumb things I said, you get the scarecrow's song activated after ice cavern, not before. Also, shadow barrier is required before fire barrier thanks to that gold gauntlet requirement.
Hey, AA, I think I've seen your name before. Are you the same Ampharos on the Smogon forums?
Anyway, Ice Cavern is the fastest area to go at first. From there, it's a bit odd... By playing the Serenade of Water, going to the Water Temple, grabbing the Longshot to save some time in the forest temple (according to some theories by TSA on the Sub-5 topic), warping back to Lake Hylia I know of. Then... I run back to Zora River, warp through Lost Woods, complete Forest Temple, then I don't know what to do.
Here's my basic route: Warp back to Lake Hylia, go to Gerudo Fortress, learn Requiem of Spirit, play Minuet of Forest to warp back to Forest Meadow, take warp to Goron Village, go to Kakariko, learn Nocturne of Shadow, go to Temple of Time, learn Prelude of Light, go back as kid, complete first part of Spirit Temple, warp back to Temple of Time, warp back to Spirit Temple, get Mirror Shield and beat Temple, warp back to Lake Hylia, complete temple (Water Temple is after Spirit Temple so I can OHKO Morpha with crouch stabs), warp to Graveyard, go to Kakariko, go up to Fire Temple, get Megaton Hammer, activate timer, go back and defeat Volvagia, clear Shadow Temple, suffer through cutscene at Temple of Time, go through Shadow and Fire Barriers at Ganon's Castle.
....My head hurts looking at it. Do I have any errors?
yep, I'm the same AA. But yeah, I don't think gettting the Longshot first is a wise option since you'd need the bow to skip a key in the water temple, and skipping that key is quite a timesaver. And you need it to get the first key anyway.
Yeah, shadow sadly has to be plopped right inbetween the two fire sections. I think it could be done in 1 hour though so you wouldn't have to worry about activating the glitch twice.
Would going to the zora river warp really be faster than going straight to the lost woods from Lake Hylia? The warp underwater in the lake doesn't work as an adult, and it would probably be faster just to exit the ice cavern by foot(no serenade) than to cross hyrule field. Plus, the lost woods is closer to lake hylia than zora's river, and the kokiri forest is shorter than zora's river.
Also, the water temple shortcuts (skipping some keys and stuff) would have to be done with save & quit, since you don't have farore's wind. So that would definitely make the run a segmented run. But if you allow save + quit for that dungeon, you could use it in other places.
I agree alex. about the like likes though, I am opposed to the idea only because it I think the idea of a minimalist run includes not only not having them at the end, but not using them at all. I am perfectly aware that buying the tunics, and losing them, are intentional parts of the game. As far as getting/ not getting the shield, I don't see what the alternative is. If this is a minimalist run, you can't just choose to have the shield simply because fights will take longer... thats one of the disadvantages to a minimal percent run, and one reason why it makes having 3 hearts so freakin' tough.

that would be save warping...meaning it could be used in the outside route...(for example as adult it is a quick save warp to the temple of time)
The Water Temple route would definitely change without Farore's Wind, but you'd be surprised what you can do just by warping to Lake Hylia and re-entering the Temple from the top floor.
